Public Speaking activities for the 1940-41 school year were started with a Local, District and County Declamation Contest. The winners of the Local Con- tests met at the York U. B. Church and the Allen School Auditorium for District Contests. The winners in the Oratorical Contest were Mary Jo Guthery, Lees- burg-Magnetic, first and Julia Detwiler, Taylor, second, Ruth Cross, Allen, first and Winnifred Guy, Millcreek, second. In the Humorous Contests, Lois Head- ington, Washington, first and Dewey Moffit, Liberty, second, Junior Story, Union, first and Joe Bishop, Allen, second. The County Ueclamation Contest was held at Richwood, November nine-' teenth, with Mary Jo Guthery winning first and Ruth Cross: second, in the Oratoricalg Lois Headington, first and Joe Bishop, second, in the Humorous Con- test. The following schools entered the Debate League this year: Washington Rural, Claibourne-Richwood Rural, Liberty Rural, Union Rural and Leesburg- Magnetic Rural. Four pactice debates were held by each school before enter- ing the County Tournament held at the Magnetic Springs School Building on March eighth. The tournament was won by the Union Rural debate team. A beautiful trophy was presented to the winning school by the Union Cbunlby' Journal. ' The 1941 Extemporaneous Speaking Contest will be held similar in all re- spects to the previous contests which have been held since 1938. The winner for 1940 was Fern VanAtta of the Leesburg-Magnetic Schools. The Public Speaking Committee is composed of Supt. C. H. Heimlich, Chair- man, Libertyg Lora Lee Adis, Washington: Bernard Heskett, Allen, Supt. R. N. Lovett, Leesburg-Magnetic, and Maxine Hall, Claibourne-Richwood.
