Sweeney, Perry S. Spain, Gale W. Baldwin, County Superintendent and Clerk, C. O. Wiley, President, J. P. Sidle, Vice President, and C. E. Moran. GREETINGS: The county office and county board of education extend to every pupil, teachelr and school patron in Union County their best wishes in promoting this county annua . Good results are not obtained without hard work and careful planning. The com- mittee in chargeb.-under the chairmanship of Superintendent F. S. Davidson, deserves much commendation. Every school has worked hard to carefully edit its pages. Most of all, the advertising committee, under the directionof Superintendent R. L. Pounds, has made the annual possible, for without advertising the price would have been too high for a wide distribution. 4 Co-operation of all forces has produced this book, which in future years will be a treasured possession. Men and women will be reminded of their school days and the faces of their school friends. -A Today, with the minds of most people vitally concerned with national defense, the schools must do their part in adjusting their work to the nation's needs. The blessings of liberty must be re-emphasized. The Republic must be preserved. 9 ............A,. , A. H, ,..A.,,,........4............., ,, ............,.,A, .. A Li. The General Scholarship Test for High School Seniors was participated in by 35 pupils and 190 pupils tried for places on the County Team. The spelling contest had entrants from each grade school in the county. The showing made in the District Contests by our representatives was most commendable, and the spirit shown by all schools in promoting scholarship is worthy of praise. This fall another team was organized, which also did very well, winning two out of the four games played. Darby also had a softball team which won more than half of its games. After softball was over the boys played a few games of six-man touch football. All of the boys enjoyed playing it. This marks our third year for this sport. In league games our basketball team won six games, losing four and finishing fourth in the south league. Darby's junior high team was composed of freshmen boys and played in the junior high tourney. Since the girls cannot win a basketball cup any more they are really taking the honors in softball. Last spring they won their fourth straight championship and last October they won their fifth cup. 1 CHUCKERY-DARBY F. F. A. In addition to our regular team we have a Juniorll-Iigh Boys' team which shows much promise. We believe that our coach has been a vital factor in the fine record made by our boys this season. The team won two victories from Darby with the scores 16 - 28 and 33 - 16, from Union with the scores being 39 - 16 and 48 - 15. The boys from Richwood High lost two games to Dover with the scores of 24 - 22 and 30 - 16. Due to illness we played Allen only once defeating them 53 - 12. Cally handed us two defeats 19 - 17 and 16 - 12. Watkins was our only other conquerer with the score of 31 - 26, however, we defeated them 37 - 21 in a previous game. . During the fall and spring, softball is enjoyed by the girls of the upper grades, while the boys find baseball interesting. The lower grades are roller-skating en- thusiasts, Ping-Pong, Checkers, and Carom are the recreations most ,in demand for play inside the building. TRIBUTE TO CUSTODIAN We wish to acknowledge our appreciation to John Butler, the custodian for our school, for his splendid work in keeping the building. always in a fine condition. We feel that Mr. Butler is a very necessary part in our school machinery. TRIP TO WASHINGTON On May 24, 1941, the Junior and Senior CIHSSGS left by train from Union Station in Columbus on the bi-annual trip to Washington, D. C. Seventeen students, one guest, and two chaperones, Supt. H. L. Snapp and Mrs. Ruby Taylor, made up the group. The party was accompanied by Wilbur Winers, a passenger agent for the B. 8: O. Railroad Company. While enroute Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt boarded the train at Wheeling, W. Va. Mrs. Roosevelt very graciously talked with the classes and shook hands with each person before retiring to her own coach. After arriving in our nation's capital and being comfortably settled in a hotel, a trip was made to Alex- andria and Mt. Vernon, Va. The Capital building, White House, Lincoln Memorial, Library of Congress, Washington Monument, National Cathedral and Smithsonian Institution were among the places visited in the city. A tour of the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland proved very interesting. The journey home was completed on May 29. Because of the educational value of the t1'ip it is hoped that every member of next year's Junior and Senior classs may find it possible to make the trip. The club offers an opportunity for members to learn correct parliamentry procedure, to develop speaking poise, and to plan group recreation. The programs offer much variety through book reviews, one-act plays, contests, readings, dialogues,,relating 'individual experiences on trips, pantomiming, dancing, and individual and group musical numbers. Besides group games the club has en- joyed several Weiner roast, treasure hunts, coasting parties, and caroling parties. The meetings, which are held twice a month, are presided over by Virginia Dodge, president, Thad Seely, vice-president, and Martha Seely, secretary-treasurer. Helen Prouty is faculty advisor. THE F. WASHINGTON RURAL SCHOOL RECENT CHANGES IN THE BYHALIA SCHOOL SYSTEM Our new bus drivers for the year 1940-1941 are: Howard Pfouts, Elihu McAllister, Phillip McIntosh and John Smith. Our new janitor is Edwin Baker. The Parent-Teacher Association which was newly organized just last year, has made substantial progress under the direction of Mrs. Elmer Jolliff. Mr. Herbert Coons has been elected to lead the organization next year. Increased interest has developed this year in various types of public speaking, particularly in debate. Miss Lora Lee Addis has charge of this work. A new course in typing has been added to our curriculum this year. The pupils are making gQ0d progress under the direction of Mr. Mosher. We have reorganized the school this year on the six-six plan ,for the first time. Mr. Orla Metz is our new coach and physical education director. We have also stressed democratic procedure and other aspects of good citizenship, with much success.
