A 4 History Class 1905 WHIG first murmur that passed around the room when we hzul assembled was, f' There are too many, whispered from mouth to mouth. But what was to be done? Some had dropped in at the beginning of this, and even of last session, but most of us had been here so long that there was nothing to do but graduate-and thus we had met to organize the Class of N ineteen-huiulred-and- five, the largest yet known in the history of our college-nunibering thirty-eight. But thirty-eight of the wisest girls tl1at ever formed a senior class-and you will think so too when I have told you of the selections they made for their class-officers. Yes, the first Whisper had been too many,'l but in the beginning the many became one, and voted that the election of Iidith M eCarthy for presi- dent be unanimous. Soon, with our president in the chair, we had a well organ- ized and orderly crowd, with Olive Bagby as vice-president, Stewart Wise as secretary, and Lucy Saunders as treasurer. Of course, there is so much that an all-wise class may do, that I cannot afford to dwell upon the minor details, but must hasten to the most important. For there were important steps to be taken. And, with the above hint as to the length of time some of us have been here, you may imagine that we have the example of some several Senior Classes, whose every aet we must do and out-do. Thus, the first thing each thought of, when we realized that we really belonged to that dignified set, were the coveted Senior l'rivileges.', How we had envied the girls last year! Well we remember how some of our dearest friends had refused to go on Broad street with us Wednesdays and Saturdays, because that was the main thing that distinguished them from the under- graduates! But every dog will have his day, and since we have gained this longed-for prize, some of our ufulergraduate frieiuls, perhaps, have been under- going the same treatment. For, though sad, ,tis true, we will forget how we felt in another's place-and it has been said, upon several occasions, that on Broad street a senior is not to be seen, even in Siu-'pherd's, on lVednesdays and Saturdays. Half of us refuse to believe this, for cannot we go alone? The meetings! How many! For there were momentous questions to be decided. The class motto, the eolor, the flower, and, last but not least, the pin. And here it was, that the thirty-eight became thirty-eight in all their individual strength and power, for it seemed not even two thought alike. The excitement rose higher and higher, and the president called meetings, meetings, meetings. Almost constantly upon the chapel door we read: 'f Important meeting of Senior Class, 12:30. Pres Until one professor, waiting each day for his Math,,' declared that we all expeeted to get our degrees by attending the graduating class, instead of those upon which the degree depends. Realizing the truth of this statement, our president, in a dignified manner, got ns into some order, we cast our votes, and lived happily-for a short while after. Only a short while, however, for now instead of class-meetings, we saw Xmas-exams posted upon the chapel door. We realized that we had neglected an important step of a graduating class, so immediately made up for it, and began to petition our beloved president and faculty that they, etc. In answer to which, a few days afterward, we saw Professor Garnett walk thought- fully to the rostrum after chapel, and we knew there was something gained-not the -92-system of the past session, but--he gave us to understancl-something better. Our examinations would count half, our daily work half. We believed- and the applause grew loud. There was so much to be done before Christinas that it seemed fortunate that our pins waited until after the holidaysg for after our festivities at home they were the first to remind us that there was yet even more work to be done. And, despite the fact that one of our girls, not wishing t.o be outdone by a frat. man's declaration that his pin represented something, declared with equal pride that hers represented a peanut. The dear little gold peanutsl' are with most of us still-and why not? For isn't Virginia a peanut State, and Richmond its Capital? What could be more loyal? Yes, there was work to be done, and since a greater mnnber usually accom- plish more work than a few, so our class of thirty-eight has been fully alive and active. We called the meeting for our election of Class Day otlicers earlier than that meeting had ever been called before. With Elise Hodgson as Orator, Una Fulcher, Poetg Ella Kyle, Tree-Oratorg Elizabeth Willingham, Bonfire Oratorg Bessie Wilson, Prophet: and Todd Motley, Valedictorian, we begin to peep into the fut.ure. We half imagine we see the end, but then there looms before us the ? and we are frightened to have dreamed of such a goal. We at Class Day-gathered around the bonfire? We at the great Alumnae banquet? We must have expected it. We elected Nona Harris to respond to the toast. All of this we fear to anticipate. But there is something nearer, something more certain-the graduates' reception. Of course, it is to be the best that has ever been. The invitations have been sent. The dresses have begun to come in from home, and we realize that it is right upon us. This we gain--we have now, connnencement is yet in the distance. So, throwing all doubts and misgivings aside, we lighten our hearts of their many Senior burdens and prepare to enjoy to the fullest the present. The present with its greatest gifts. But have we been selfish, we Seniors? For-give us, we have not meant it. Non nobis solumi' is our motto, and may we never forget it! Not merely for ourselvesu have we worked, suffered, or thought during our session, and 'tnot merely for ourselves do we wish to gain the little pleasures of college life. Our work for the future we have planned for those at home-our present pleasure we have planned for those about us. You may not realize it in all we do, fellow-students, but the real pleasure of life is in what we do for others. Without you, our class would be nothingg and by your enjoyment and pleasure we gain ours. So we stand to-day where your careless hearts some day may stand. Half- doubting, half-hoping, we look forward to our goal. 1cI1s'rorc1ixN. Cupid's Assistant 66 ON l' look so downcast, old fellowg who ever supposed that you would - let a girl's throwing you over affect you like this? Cheer up, .laekg there are plenty n1o1'e girls in the world. Thus spake Phil Staunton to his roommate, .lack lCdwards, who lay stretched out in a big armchair, disconso- lately watching the glowing coals of the fire. J ack moved uneasily, but, without lifting his eyes, answered, Yes, plenty other girls in the world, but no other for me. I' Why, lCdwards, said Phil laughing, I didn't know you were so senti- mental. If that is the case, the only thing to do is to kiss and make up. Take all the blame, whether it belongs to you or not. That would be better than worrying yourself to death, as you are doing now. But she said she never wanted to see me again, and I told her she never would, unless she sent for me. Besides, it wasn't all my fault, I eouldn't help kissing her when she looked so pretty-U Here he was interrupted by a loud laugh from Phil. You needn't make a goose of yourself, he continued, I am sure there is nothing funny in it. Don't get mad, Jack, I can't help laughing, you are so funny, but I'm your friend just the same, and will do all I can to help you out, At present, however, I have a patient to visit. Good-bye, don't sit there and mope all the time I am awayfl As young Dr. Staunton walked down the street, the smile left his face, and he said to himself, Something must be done for Jack. Poor boyg Cupid has played sad havoc with him. I hate to see him so worried, and really must do something to help him out. Let me seeg ean't I arlaange some meeting for l1i1n and Dorothy Winn, and let them patch it all up? But how shall Ido it? This was a serious problem, and, although Phil thought and planned, he could find no solution. Having paid his visit, he returned home, still absorbed in thought. When he passed by the Church he was accustomed to attend a bright idea stmck him. Ah, I have it at last, he said. If I can only persuade Jack to come to Church next Sunday night. I will have to do a great deal of maneuvering to carry out my plan, but I'll do it. Next day, after his round of visits, Phil might have been seen ascending the steps of the Reverend A1'cl1ibald Brackstoncls house. What he l1ad to say with this clistinguisheml Divine no one knew, but as a result of the visit, he came out smiling anal saying softly, Well, that much is 3tCC0lllllllSll0tl.H Sauntering on up the st1'eet, Phil met a boy of about fourteen. Hey, there, Bill, he saiml, how woulcl you like to make a quarter? I ine.'l Well, you must do exactly as I tell you, antl not tell anybomly until it is all over. Alright, but what must I do? Phil gave his orclers. Do you agree?l' Yesg thatls an easy job. Very wellg here is your quarter, you flo it up all right ancl maybe you'll get another.'l Phil was now anxious for Sunday to come to see how his scheme woulcl work- At last the fateful mlay arrivecl. Sunclay afternoon Phil saicl, Say, Jack, suppose we go to hear Dr. Brackstone to-night. t'Oh, I mlonlt care. .lust before Church time Phil rushecl into his room. t'I've just gotten a ,phone message to visit Mr. Smith at once, so I can't go to Church with you. Hut you go ancl sit in pew Number 53, anml I will be there about ten minutes late. Be sure to save me plenty of room: you know I 1lon't like to be erowcle1l. anal with that he was off. It was ten minutes after eight. The choir hail just begun to sing the Gloria Patri when Phil walkecl in Church with a beautiful girl at his sicle. He boweml to the usher, ancl, when the young lacly was not looking, whisperell in his ear, Pew Number 53, please. .lack loveil music, anal he was listening attentively to the choir when he hearml the rustling of skirts. Looking arouncl he saw Phil anml Dorothy entering the pew. As she took her seat,besi1le him their eyes met, but, excepting a blush on both faces, they gave no signs of recog- nition. .Iaek's heart beat violently. To be sitting next to Dorothy anml still not speak! It was altogether a painful situation for both. W hat a mean trick in Phil, thought Jack, to try to torment me like this. I mlimln't think it of him. At this moment the preacher arose anml announeccl his text. I wish to speak to-night on forgiveness-forgive your enemiesf, Phil, who for some reason happenecl to be looking towarlls Jack, saw him suclclenly start, While the girl at l1is simle eolorecl fleeply anml bit her lip. Dr. Hrackstone preacheml an excellent sermon that night, pointing out thc follies of anger, anal, in conclusion, exhorting any one in the whole congregation who was angry with any one to be reconeileml that very night. Just at this moment a boy of about fourteen came rushing breathless up the miilclle aisle. Stopping at Phil's pew, he saiml in a whisper, loucl enough to bc hearml by all arounml, Dr. Staunton, Mr. Wright has just broken a blootl- vessel, anal seems to be mlying. Come at once, or it will be too latefl Snatching up his hat, Phil, with a most serious face, turned to Dorothy, Miss Winn, I will have to ask you to allow Mr. lidwards to see you home. Jack, won't you escort Miss Winn home? Saying this, Phil rushed out of Church with a most solemn air. No sooner had he reached the Church porch, however, than his serious air left him. Sitting down on the steps he laughed until he was weak. Why, I've made quite a reputation for myself, as well as helping out Jack,'l said he, when he had regained his breath. I' Hello, Bill, is that you? he called, seeing a figure near him. You did your part line, and here's your pay, throwing him a fifty-cent piece. Phil slowly walked home. Going into his room, he threw himself into a big chair and thought, at times an amused look coming over his face. I have done my part, it all rests with Jackf' I-le finished his cigar. I hope Jack won't stay forever, I must hear the end of this to-night. The clock struck eleven, half-past, and then twelve, but .lack did not come. At last, when the clock showed almost one and Phil's patience was nearly gone, the door opened and in walked Jack. Have you come at last? How did you and Dorothy get along? Oh, fine, but why are you up so late? Just gotten hack from your patient?'l said Jack, trying to evade further questioning. Yes, just gotten back, said Phil' laughing. Jack looked at him curiously, and then a light broke on his lace. Say, was all that a put up job? Phil laughed, but said nothing. Old fellow,'l said Jack striding up to him and wringing his hand, won't you be the best man? IC. W. A Romance They were walking in the moonlight. Silence prevailed. He held her hand. There was a slight flutter ol' the leaves. The silence was broken- 'flVIuriel, do give me your promisefl She hesitated. No, not to-night-maybe to-morrow. The rest of the way they were speechless. When they reached the porch, hc kissed her good-night, aml went his way, in a very troubled stale of mind. The next day eight-year-old Muriel promised ten-year-old Harold that she would not tell 'fMother that she caught him smoking cigarette stumps behind the big oak tree. B. The Message of the Violet ES, you are more beautiful than I,-I admit thatg but 'tis no reason you should laugh at me. You are double aml have had more care, while all my growing I've done alone. All the more eredit to me that, though you in your beauty are placed here upon her dressing-table, yet I find a place beside ytlll. Yes, I admit too, that you are higher, but my stem is short and I'm quite satis- fied with my little vase. Still you laugh? Ah! wait until you've heard my story. They seemed to have quarreled dreadfully. l'laeh was so calm and deter- mined that I wonder what must have been the result had not I come to them. 'llhreels a crowd? That's nonsense where oneis a Hilower of love , besides, you must not interrupt. Anyway 'twas my opportunity, so I took advantage of it. Perhaps you've heard the song, since it is original with our family, that is, with us of the woodlands. I never knew.you of the hot-house and half doubt that we are kin at all. I begin to feel weak now, so must hasten. 'A I brmg ll, breath of spring time From leoofllrlnlls ielzere I grew., , I sang it as loud as I could, but neither seemed to hear. Soon the man began to dig the dirt about me with her parasol, and several times struck the big green leaves that hid me from view. The girl was looking far oii' among the trees across the brook, and there must have been some terrible misunder- standing, judging from this long intent gaze, for not once had she looked toward the man since I had first commenced to watch them. Although her face was turned away from me, I knew she must be V0l'y beautiful. The clear-cut profile, the chin tilted in an imliH'erent, independent way, and the mass of black hair coiled low on the neck made, to me, a beautiful picture. And I wondered Why the man's face looked so stern. The firm, square jaw, the mouth set in strong, drawn lines, the brows knit in a frown above the handsome eyes. Then so furiously he dug the ground about me that he broke the leaves from around aml badly bruised my stem. I continued my song, hoping by some chance to save myself from the sad fate that seemed awaiting me. 7'l1ere's ll kiss upon eucll, pelul, My lips are sweet IPIIHIV rleze. Whether he heard or saw me I know not. .Iust at this moment, however, he stooped and took hold of my stem, which quickly broke where he had so mercilessly bruised me. I was glad, too, that it left me very short, just to spite him. The frown now passed from his brow and a new light gleamed in the kind, dark eyes. I bring ll Iweutlz of spririg lime l ro'm. Slowly she turned her head toward us in a half-questioning, half-indifferent way, and, for the first time, I got a glimpse into the deep, long-lashed eyes, which struck me as greatly resembling my own. No sooner had this thought fiashed upon me than the mam said, Look, Violet, I never knew before how well the name suited you. 'l'here's not a shade of difference between this little tlower and your eyes. Look up at me. I had nearly erushed it there in its hiding plaee. What a brute I am-and had I nearly crushed you, too, little woman ? he asked, as he leaned toward her. Yes, she answered simply, but you would never have known it. And seeing the strong mouth I realized that too. But it was my duty now to take up my song where I left off. The one who sends this message W ould uilmfsper soft to you.. If in anything you see your own experiences - pictured, just relneniber that you may have been a participant, for it is a true story, and it all happened in our own dear Woman's College. You do not remember by what name you went that first session. You know seniors have a convenient wayof forgetting their first appearance at college. Y In fact we are all loath to look back and-- --see ozlrsels as olllers see us. O yes, the first year you know it all! No one need tell you that you are on the wrong street your first Wednesday. You know it is Broad street, and are not going to let that old girl bluff you. And when finding you strolling leisurely toward Richmond College campus it is useless that they toll you that is Capitol Square. You know it, and they do not want to tell you what you are so sure you know. Thus you find yourself left to plod your first three months alone. But your teachers claim it is best for you to find out things for yourself. Yes, new you fully realize that one rcmcinbcrs better. The first night you arrived! Can you ever forget it? 'Tis after supper hour, and the matron takes you to the dining-room for something to eat. You tell your name, stringing it to its full length, as they call you at home. By the time you have had it llllSlJI'0Il0L1IlC!'ll and asked over several times, however, you are glad to give it in its shortest form. The first night, too, you hasten toward you room, saying to your roommate in the hall you will bring the lamp for her to open her trunk. But when you find your lump with no chimney, and fastened by a long gilt 'I'0ff to the imll, you slip sneakingly back and tell her you think you can help her without bothering about the light. Still, with all this, you put on a brave face, and when several old girls, some unannounced, come into your room, you answer their many questions as to your name, parent, home, post-office, county and state, wondering that they did not learn while studying geography that there was such a place as home. But there is still more to stand when you fail to place correct interpreta- tion upon the various bells, and walk to breakfast at the rising bell. In this, though, you profit by your first morning's experience, and never again are you seen in the breakfast room ahead of time, while often you are glad to get there at all. The first pang of homesickness fiashes across you the next day upon the street when the professor from your county finds you gazing after a mule and dump-cart. A sigh escapes you, and you greet him with the. question, lloesn't that remind you of home? Your social life is by no means neglected during your first session. An old girl explains that you can receive twice a month on reception night, and you begin to wonder whom you will receive. True, there is a rather young fellow who came to Richmond College from your home. You have a vague remembrance of how, when teased, he used to run from you. While these thoughts are passing in your mind an important event of your college life oc- curs. Tickets are sent fron1 Richmond College for the Thomas Lectures at that institution. You, with eight or nine other girls, go with one of the professors. During the lecture you would go to sleep but for the whispered connnents you hear from the window near you. You listen and learn that you are a new girl and mighty small -in fact, nothing but a kid, and that Woman,s College has a kindergarten 1lepartment. Finally, after a few more of such remarks, you decide that they must mean this for the little girl in front of you. At last the lecture is ended and some teachers take their crowds out by way of the windows, but all are followed to the car by a yelling mob of boys. Your professor puts you on one end of the ear, while at the opposite end your president calls you off, saying it is the wrong car. Thinking your chaperon is with you, your president steps on the next car, and all move toward home, leaving you and your five companions between the two car tracks and surrounded by the howling mass of boys. Your presence of mind comes to your aid. Though in doubt as to your basliful friend's help, you realize that there is nothing like a trial. So you quiet the girls' shrieks, and at the top of your voice call most piteously, f'Tomniy, Tommy, and to your surprise and delight Tonnny hears, gathers reinforcements and comes. Yes, he brings a great tall friend, a real ugly friendg and the three say they will chaperon you home. You take a Broad-street car, and feel you must make good this opportunityg so you form with Tommy, the tall friend, and the ugly friend a friendship destined to last. Never since have you wanted-a ehaperon, no not even that night when Miss Sweeney, having missed you, steps on the car at Eiglitli and Broad streets and forms in thedoor- way a big---? You get closer to your companions and leave the new tall chap- eron to explain. All, however, ends well, and when at Tenth street you are met by Dr. Nelson, your new friend becomes the hero of the story. But you do not forget Tonnny in praise of your chaperon. You guess that college boys don't tease as the people at home do. You meet Tommy's many friends, and one comes each reception night. Thus, your first year at college you feel very big, very popular, and you like all boys the same. The second year! How glad you are to see the old girls! You don't know so much as you did last year, still you think you can save the new girls your lesson of sad experience. You gain some fun from this futile attempt, and realize that they must learn as you did. Soon after the opening of this second session your college friend makes the football team. Here comes a season ticket, and soon you become a foot- ball enthusiast. Sad for you that this day should dawn! The many comrade- shi ps of the previous year now fade from view, while all your thoughts center upon one. The season is soon ended, and you are glad your hero escaped without a broken nose. You begin to dream day and night. Then often you get letters from home solieitous of your health, since your elassmarks get constantly lower and lower. You have right many absent marks, too, and they think perhaps you'd best come home. You write that you are taking medicine, and will soon work better. I5eside,you have a heavy course, and they should not expect much of you. If, however, they could sec you a few moments later, you doubt as to their considering the course heavy, since it consists of no more than a square mass of feathersg for at this time you are working strenuously to get a cord around a pillow which, if a senior can remember rightly, has a football upon one side. Despite your foolish idea that you are made for each other, at last there comes an end to the dream of love. He becomes so absorbed in pa1'allel work that you cannot stand it longer. You become suddenly independent, and then-the end! You pine, and he-plays baseball! From this pining you begin to fall into bad health, which results in the terrible disease measles. Whether the other twenty eases arise from like causes you are unable to say. But certain you are that your case is all his fault, and you think it would be romantic to die. You get well, however, and drop two classes, as you now expect to go in training for a nurse next year. They say it is too near the end of the session to come home. All of these troubles finally are forgotten in the great feast of April the first. ltlow nobly it is planned! The many things are ordered and taken to the girls' rooms by the bribed bell-boy when all are at supper. Two girls are appointed for each teacherls door. Tie a teacher in! ! ! Yes, 'tis all that can be done. Never have we entirely succeeded in our pranks with so many right among us, and this must be to all an April fool. Each teacher anticipates it, too, or why should two sleep with clothes on, lights burning, and doors open? Not only open, but a screen in one and an iron bar in the other, that they cannot be closed without arousing the occupant. In spite of hammering which arouses all, and a head hung through the transom calling that she knows us all, suffice it to say that, in spite of all this, those doors are shut and tied. Not until the last girl, with a pillowrlip of bananas across her shoulder, is making her way toward chapel, does the door-knob drop from one teacher's door and the eecu- pant walk forth with a lamp. The girl with the bananas gives the alarm, rolls down the steps, and is dragged into chapel in time to barricade the door before it is forever too late. Then the fun begins. Neither before nor since has such a feast ever been known behind these walls. The merry songs drown all sounds of attempts at getting in either doors or windows, for by now teacher number one has cut all ropes fastening the rest, and there are several on our track. Looking through the keyhole we see two figures in kimonas sitting on the steps apparently en- joying the music within. Presently there comes a loud knock upon thedoor, and you recognize in the voice accompanying it that of your revered president. Instantaneously from each girl's throat goes out the song, Aint 'aft fl shame, 11. measly shame, etc. Finding all attempts to gain admittance futile, our teachers retire to the reading room, Where 'tis reported a great consultation was held, in which our president, turning to the lone professor in their midst, is said to have exclaimed, Let's expel them all and get a new set of girls. This they finally decide not to do, since it is now the first of April. After a happy hour together we line up two and two and rush madly to our rooms. 'Tis a howling success in every way, even the surprise that each receives by being allowed to go on Broad street the following Saturday morning. Except for slight Hhazing, for, letls say, blaeking,'l as we steer clear of all pertaining to the former word i11 our college, at the beginning of your third session all is work. This is the first time you have thought of your degree. How foolish you were to drop those two classes last session, now that your idea of becoming a trained nurse has forever fled. How wise you feel this year. You must be a bit older. Youhavehadmueh experience, and do not feel your importance as you once did. You even take a room in the annex, and your friends fear you may become a bookworm. How fortunate you are to get this room, where there are no transoms through which to see your midnight light. You are not so absorbed in your work, though, that you cannot enjoy more brilliant experiences in the main building. One morning at breakfast every one is asking: Did you hear the crowing last night?l' Crowing! What crowing'? you ask. W hy about six seniors are suspended for crowingf' After nuich questioning you learn that a portion of that dignified set, growing tired of constantly setting a good example, eondescend to break the monotony by fowl-play. According to an agreement each puts forth her head from her own door about twelve o'cloek and crows. So well do they answer one another in imitation of' the real fowl that several of our leadingAlady teachers go out upon a chicken hunt, which from our first greeting at breakfast seems to have proved successful. Your fourth session brings the word Senior to you in all its varied meaning and stern reality. Grave, gay, teiling, happy senior! But how little you feel in comparison with your feelings of previous sessions. Each year you become smaller and smaller in your own sight, and you wonder what you may be ere eonnnencement, toward which you anxiously look. All is work before Christmas, but afterward there are many receptions given to and by you. First and foremost, about the last of .laiuiary there is the undergraduates' reception to your class. What an event in college life! And may each one of you be here next session to occupy our places, and be honored in like manner by your undergraduate friends. Though crowded with work, you find something aside from the regular routine in basketball and tennis. In these you unhurden your mind of its cares, and, here, too, you find some goal toward which you put forth your every effort-especially in basketball. Heretofore two teams have been chosen to play each other. Now there is to be a picked team, or first team. This means work, and how eagerly and enthusiastically you enter this contest, for some onehas said you cannotrnake the team-you are Zoo short. But this proves only an incentive to greater striving. For has it come to this-that you in your Senior year must realize that you are forever too small-you who felt so big that first year? Live and learnf, You have been getting smaller year by year, but now it is thrust upon you, and you accept the fact as a stern reality. L. What's in a Name? . ' T WAS a moonlight night, an ideal night for lovers-and there were lovers, Many 5 but there were only two down under the Hawthorne Busch, and they had forgotten the world and every one in it, as lovers do, you know. He was telling the Old, Old story, but who is it in this Motley crowd hur- rying along the highways and byways of life who has not stopped to tell or listen to this same story. Who is too high? Not the King in his Royal palace, nor his son, the Prince, in the Couneill Hall. Who is too low? Not the dusky Miller nor the Baker 3 nor the court Jester, he is a Merryman, but his Hart is not always as light as his head. Who is too 'Green? Who is too Wise? Who is too Gude, not the Dean, nor the Chaplin. Who is too bad, not the Robberftbs, who rob Good-rich and poor alike? Not the Minor, who Diggs and Diggs and has Moore Knight than Day. It is a Power, Bendall to it. So this lover had come Miles to see his sweetheart, and now he must face her Stern parent. Ah! he murmured, It would Payne even the bravest to think of that. Let us sit a little longer by this quiet Poole, listening to the wind Russell through the trees, and then-why-you know I would Ford a river, go to bottomless Pitts, Fellieimers on the Gardner's head or-why I will ask your father for you. But she punehed holes in the Sands and kept quiet, for she knew her father was not Stone, as poor James thought, and his Taylor had pleased him well that Day, so all would be Wright. As they strolled over the Orchard and and climbed the Hill they were unusually silent. James realizes as he Saunders along that he is going up against the real thing in the disguise ol' a fellow-creature comfortably seated on the West piazza nodding and smoking good cigars. And she was thinking-perhaps it was of the Garnett ring she was turning on her finger, perhaps of him, or the dress of many Hughes her Unkel was going to give her, or-who knows what a woman is thinking of? :ic :if wk wk Pk wk Pk :if wk The wedding Day was all sunshine. You could hear the Birdsong and see the Martin flying in and out of the ivy on the Chappell walls. After the wed- ding, with mueh Rice and Raekett they boarded the West bound train, and nothing Moore was seen of them for many a Day. A. S. A Warning KK5 Nell Oh! VIRGINIA WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1854 ff gi, CCATED in the beautiful, historic and cultured city of the South, the College offers unsurpassed advantages x mxf-5 in Letters, Science, Music, Art and Elocution. Educa- gy W tional advantages growing out of location of this school in a great city, a centre of culture, could not be duplicated on an endowment of less than a million dollars. A large faculty of specialists trained in the best schools and conservatories of this country and Europe. The table is supplied with the best the markets of Richmond can afford. Rates lower than those of any institution of like grade in the South. The health record of the College is indeed remark- able. Professor John I-iart, after a -long experience as a teacher in several places in Virginia, wrote Dr. Nelson the following testimonial: You ask my opinion of the healthfulness of Richmond. I have taught classes of young ladies in Charlottesville, Staunton and Rich- mond. The health of my family and students was decidedly best in Richmond. -JOHN HART JAMES NELSON, President, Send for Catalogue. RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
