...41 . ,,,, 7 Captain's Presentation. It is courage when a man takes action and holds out his hand to his brother. Every man is a hero who sees himself as a man and does what must be done. When evacuation of the fireroom was ordered, they stayed behind despite the extremely high temperature and lack of lighting to ensure that all personnel were safe. They located one man overcome by heat and assisted him in escaping to safety. Upon being informed that a man was missing, they reentered the un- bearably hot fireroom. With complete disre- gard for their own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, conducted a thorough search of the fireroom, Upon being assured that no one had been left behind, they made their own escape. Their courageous and prompt actions in the face of great per- sonal risk saved one man from suffocation. Their actions were in keeping with the high- est traditions of the United States Naval Service. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Medal to Walter Louis Feasel Boiler Technician Third Class and John Russell Boiler Technician Second Class For heroism while serving on board and assigned to the forward fireroom of the USS RICHMOND K. TURNER QDLG-20y on Febru- ary 19, 1970, while the ship was moored to berth M-2 Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. When a casuality to the engineering plant occurred, Petty Officers Feasel and Russell rushed to the fireroom, which was dark with the temp- erature rising to a dangerous level, to assist in securing the boiler.
