l l 9 L 5 l 1 F 'Q if 2 5' 5 3 i L Y SUBIC BAY AND THE GULF DF TONKIN i Subic Bay is the sight of the U.S. Navy's base in the Philippines. Almost every ship stationed in the Gulf of Tonkin will stop here. The base is busy with numerous activities for the ships and a wealth of recreational facilities for the crews. A two day ship'S party is held on Grande Island, located in the middle of Subic Bay. Golf, baseball, volleyball, swimming, and free food and cold drinks are the order of the day. On the 29th of June we arrive in the Gulf from Subic Bay and assume SAR fSearch and Rescuej and Plane guard duties. These duties require that we be conf stantly ready to rescue a downed pilot. To assist ln our mission we carry a helicopter on our He10'P01'tf usually known as the Ricky-T's fantail. Setting a large chopper down in such a small area is difficult. Coordination between the helo crews and our landing signal officers results in many landings and take-offS without incident. There is literally no room for err0I'S here. After fifteen long days on the line we sail for Hong Kong and a little Rest and Recreation. 54 - ig 1 rL...a,t-. ,.,: .,
