Legend tells us that it is a day of foreboding and ill fortune. Maybe, but our thoughts are of loved ones whom We leave today on our way to the Western Pacific. As the Spanish say, it is not a farewell, but only the wish for a good voyage until we meet again. Once at sea, we rendezvous with the grey' hounds BERKELEY, JOH PAUL JONES, DECATUR, AR OLD J, ISBELL, and MC- KEAN. The ships form a five-pointed star, with us at the center, and we sail toward Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Drills are the order of the day. The sky is very blue and the sun very warm on this Pacific Paradise. For three days we enjoy the sights and sounds on the island of Oahu. Many of the crew rent cars, surfboards, or merely stroll on the clean, wide stretches of the shore. This is to be our last look at the United States until August. Upon leaving Hawaii, the ship heads west toward Japan. In the meantime, we take time out for a seafaring picnic. Fantai1 Follies presents the talents of the RKT followed by a cookout. The weather turns. Mother Sea shows us that she can be harsh and un- pleasant. No longer are the skies blue, but now dark and the sea becomes heavy. The old salts weather it out, but our younger and newer ship- mates see a great deal of the rail. Almost every ship stationed in the Gulf of Tonkin will stop here. The base is busy with numerous activities for the ships and a wealth of recreational facilities for the crews. A two day ship'S party is held on Grande Island, located in the middle of Subic Bay. Golf, baseball, volleyball, swimming, and free food and cold drinks are the order of the day. On the 29th of June we arrive in the Gulf from Subic Bay and assume SAR fSearch and Rescuej and Plane guard duties. These duties require that we be conf stantly ready to rescue a downed pilot. To assist ln our mission we carry a helicopter on our He10'P01'tf usually known as the Ricky-T's fantail. Setting a large chopper down in such a small area is difficult. Coordination between the helo crews and our landing signal officers results in many landings and take-offS without incident. There is literally no room for err0I'S here. Every man is a hero who sees himself as a man and does what must be done. When evacuation of the fireroom was ordered, they stayed behind despite the extremely high temperature and lack of lighting to ensure that all personnel were safe. They located one man overcome by heat and assisted him in escaping to safety. Upon being informed that a man was missing, they reentered the un- bearably hot fireroom. With complete disre- gard for their own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, conducted a thorough search of the fireroom, Upon being assured that no one had been left behind, they made their own escape. Their courageous and prompt actions in the face of great per- sonal risk saved one man from suffocation. Their actions were in keeping with the high- est traditions of the United States Naval Service. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Medal to Walter Louis Feasel Boiler Technician Third Class and John Russell Boiler Technician Second Class For heroism while serving on board and assigned to the forward fireroom of the USS RICHMOND K. When a casuality to the engineering plant occurred, Petty Officers Feasel and Russell rushed to the fireroom, which was dark with the temp- erature rising to a dangerous level, to assist in securing the boiler.
