Ltjg Samford was detached early in the c1'L1iSe to report to Destroyer School but Senior Chief Petty Officers Kelly and Ferris more than ade quately filled the gap until Lt Freibert returned to the ship in january. The division had many advancements in rate during the cruise, including the awarding of the hat to MMC Hubbard. Riolo brought further acclaim and distinction to the division by finishing a suave second in the beard growing contest.
