T' OUR FIRST HEROS It must be said that a United States Naval Man O'War is a formidable weapon of defense against aggression only when her crew, officers and men alike, unite their dedication, loyalty, devotion to duty, pride, and professional skills in a common effort to make her such. Occasion- ally, however, there are those individuals whose unwavering excellence in the performance of duties renders them worthy of special recognition. At the completion of her maiden voyage, the TURNER boasted of two such individuals. The Navy Commendation Medal, awarded for meritorious achievement and outstanding perform- ance of duty , was presented to Lieutenant Ulysses S. james, and to L. Hubbard, RDl by Rear Admiral Goodfellow, COMCRUDESFLGT Nine for the proficiency and skill with which they performed their duties as air controllers during our special operations in the South China Seas. With extreme pride, we of the TURNER extend our congratulations to Mr. james and Hub- bard and let us all resolve to strive for the standards of performance established by these two. The TURNER tradition has begun with this fitting end to her maiden voyage.
