THE CONIIVIANDING OFFICER Alpine W. McLane was born April 29, 1921, in Linesville, Pennsylvania, the son of Alpine W. and Harriet Meek McLane. The captain began his military training at Pishburne Military School, Waynesboro, Vir- ginia in 1936 and graduated from this prep school two years later. He entered Pennsylvania State University in 1938 and was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree three years later. After college he Worked as a Personnel Manager and Administrative Assistant for Area Engineer, U.S. Army at Keystone Ordnance Works, Meadville, Pennsylvania. Ca-ptain Mc- Lane enlisted in the Navy on june 21, 1942 and received his commission through the V-7 program on December 21 of the same year. Since his commissioning he has served in succession as Commanding Officer PT 242, Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 19, Commanding Officer PT 242 and Division Leader, Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 23, Student, Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Training Center, Melville, Rhode Island, Commanding Officer PT 303, Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 22, Assistant Pro- fessor of Naval Science, University of Minnesota, Assistant Professor of Naval Science, Princeton University, Operations Officer, the destroyer USS GLENNON, Executive Officer, destroyer USS GHERARDI, Associate Professor of Naval Science, Miami University Qof Ohioj, Commanding Officer, Destroyer Escort USS SNOWDEN, Student, Naval War College, Execu- tive Assistant and Aide to the President, Naval War College, Naval Operations Officer, Staff, Commander in Chief, Pacific, Commanding Officer of the destroyer USS DECATUR, Head of Cruiser, Destroyer, Minecraft Placement Office, Bureau of Naval Personnel, Student, Nation- al War College. Captain McLane took command of RICHMOND K. TURNER on 14 August 1965 Captain McLane was married to the former Miss jane Benson, of Lancaster, Ohio, on june 22, 1946. They have two children, Stephen Benson and Michael Nelson. He holds the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with four battle stars and the Mediterranean-European Ribbon with one battle star. COMMANDER WILLIAM L BRYAN, USN THE FIRST EXECUTIVE OFFICER Commander William L Bryan the first Executive Officer of the USS RICHMOND K. TUR- NER QDLG-ZOI his previously serx ed at sea in the destroyer, amphibious, and mine counter measures forees Upon being commissioned in 1949, Commander Bryan served in the Gunnery and Operations Department of the USS POWER CDD-8395 and subsequently in the Operations and Engineering Department of the USS HAILEY CDD-5561 From july 1955 through September 1956 he served on the staff of the Commander, Amphibious Group Three, aboard various of the task foiee involved in the transportation of materials for constructing the Distant Early Warning QDEWI line During 1957 Commander Bryan served as Executive Officer, USS PLUCK CMSO-46-ll and during 1955 as Commanding Officer, USS NOTABLE QMSO-4601. While on shoie duty Commander Bryan undertook three years of post graduate studies in engineering electronics at the U S Naval Post Graduate School at Monterey, California and acquired a master s degree in that subject He also completed in 1960 the Command and Staff Course at the Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island Commander Bryan served as a system designer! analyst and computer programmer at the Fleet Programming Center, Pacific when that activity xx as producing the initial few generations of computer programs for the Naval Tactical Data System Commander Bryan was born in Newport, Rhode Island on 5 March 1928 , He entered the U S Naval Academy in August 19-15 after attending schools in various parts of the country During his last yeai at the Naval Academy, he captained the varsity fencing team, and won the NCAA fencing championship for epee in 1948 He graduated from the Naval Academy in june 1949 and was commissioned an Ensign in the line, U S Navy He attained the rank of Commander as of 1 January 196-1 Commander Bryan has the World War ll Victory Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Med- al QEuropej and the National Defense Service Medal Commander Bryan was married in Scranton, Pennsylvania September 1951, to the former A Ann Warren of Waverly Pennsylvania They have five children, William L.
