At the forefront of U5 presence, ships of the Middle East Force foster goodwill and understanding between the United States and Middle East and Western Indian Ocean countries. The Gulf area contains three-fourths of the world 's proven oil reserves and produces onc- third of the world 's consumption of petroleum products. Merchant shipping is significant espe. cially that conducted with the transport of pe. troleum products. By its presence, the Middle East Force demonstrates the commitment of the United Sta tes to freedom of the seas in this vital region. The Middle East Force is comprised of the lla gship, USS LASALLE, and normally live or six destroyers or friga tes that deploy from the United States. An SH-3G helicopter provides air resupply and a small, land-based logistical facility supports the ships at sea. Concentrated primarily in the Arabian Gulf the ships and men of the Middle East Force carry out a variety of tasks within thc broad mission of conducting operations in sup- port of national objectives. These include train- ing, air and sea surveillance, monitoring U.S. llagged merchant shipping and rendering hu- manitarian assistance. Middle East Force ships traditionally conduct passing and transit excr- cises with U.S. ships and also with littoral and other fore1gn navies operating in the region. These are short, small-scale training exercises involving communications, maneuvering drills, mght screen exercises and replenishments at sea. The Commander of the Middle East Foret and his designated representatives pay 0fl7Cl-Tl visits on high-ranking military and governmen- tal ofhcials during port calls in local countries. The Admiral also hosts luncheons and rcccp tions aboard the flagship during visits. Thcsf opportunities are utilized to emphasize AmCfl' can concern and resolve. With the out-break of the Iran-Iraq WU and subsequent indiscriminate attacks against neutral shipping, the Middle East Force HS' sumed a new responsibility, that ofacc0fI1P3 f ' ing and protecting American-flagged ShlP5 dur' ing their voyages through the Gulf Although subsequently enlarged in size, the role of fb' Middle East Force remains virtually unchailgdl since inception in January, 1949. .
