TURNER is one of a class of nine double-ended Imissiles fore and aftj guided missile cruisers. She was built by New York Shipbuilding Corporation at Camden, New Jersey. Her keel was laid on January 9, 1961. She was launched on April 6, 1963, and was commissioned at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on June 13, 1964. After joining the PaciHc Fleet, RICHMOND K. TURNER completed Eve deployments to the Western Pacific, all of which included action in the Vietnam conflict. On May 5, 1971, after five distinguished deployments to the Western Pacihc, TURNER was decommissioned at Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine under a Navjywide program to enhance the anti-air warfare of all guided missile frigates. TURNER was recommissioned at Bath Iron Works on May 27, 1972. Since her recommissioning, RICHMOND K. TURNER has deployed on a UNITAS Cruise to South America in 1973. and participated in Operation 200 which included the International Naval Review in New York City on the occasion of the Nations Bicentennial Celebration on July 4, 1 976. In May 1 980, TURNER participated in Boston 's,OPSAIL 80, and in addition to conducting two special operations for which she was awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation, RICHMOND K. TURNER has completed Eve highly successful Med deployments as a unit of the U.S. Sixth Fleet. From January 1982 until December 1982, TURNER under went an extensive baseline overhaul at Charleston Naval Shipyard, Charleston, South Carolina. During this period, she received numerous updates and modernizations to her Combat Systems Suite, and in addition, the installation of the Vulcan Phalanx Close-in-weapons system, for self defense against cruise missiles. Named for Admiral Richmond K. TURNER, USN, who distinguished himself as a Commander of the PaciHC Area Amphibious Force during World War II, USS RICHMOND K. TURNER is equipped to escort and protect high speed carrier forces against enemy air, surface and submarine threats. She can also operate independently for prolonged periods of time. In order to accomplish her mission, the ship is equipped with the latest in main propulsion machinery, modern long range air, surface and underwater detection and tracking equipment, .and modern anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine missiles. Weap0I15 include. two Terrier missile launching systems Ifore and aftj, one Anti-Submarine Rocket IASROC1 launching group, two tripple tube torpedo mounts, two four-cannister Harpoon Missile launchers. and two Vulcan Phalanx close-in-weapons-system mounts. RICHMOND K. TURNER has an overall length of 534 feet with a maximum beam of 55 feet. HCI' navigational draft is 26 feet and her full load displacement is 8,200 tons. She is powered by steam turbines, has two screws and a single rudder, and is capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots. USS RICHMOND TURNER is a unit of Cruiser Destroyer Group TWO, and is homeported in Charleston. South Carolina. 2 .

Wind' CAPTAIN D VID B. ROBINSUM USN C OM MA DI G OIETYCER Captain Robinson was born in Alexandria, Louisiana. He attended Texas A8zM University before entering the United States Na val Academy and was commissioned an Ensign, USN in 1963. His Hrst assignment after commissioning was USS STORMES IDD-7801 where he served as the Main Propulsion Assistant and Damage Control Assistant. After graduation from the U.S. Destroyer School in 1965, he reported aboard the USS ROWAN IDD-7821 as Engineer Officer. He commenced his post graduate education in 1967 at the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California, and was awarded a Master of Physics in Oceanography degree. In 1 969, he assumed command of USS CANON IPG-901, operating in Southeast Asian waters, followed by a tour as Commanding OfHcer of USS READY IPG-871. In 1971, Captain Robinson assumed duties as the Administrative Aide to the Joint Chiefs of Staff He returned to sea in 1974 as Executive OfHcer of the USS DALE ICG-191 and assumed command of the USS LUCE IDDG-381 in 1976. His next two assignments were in the Naval Military Personnel Command. Captain Robinson 's most recent assignment was as a member of a Foreign Service Institutes Executive Seminar in National and International affairs. Captain Robinson 's personal decorations include the Navy Cross, Bronze Star with combat V , Meritorious Service Medal, Purple Heart and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. He is married to the former Gene Kirkpatrick. They have two sons, Kirk and David. 3
