Back to School! Summer is over and it's back to the grindstone for students and teachers. Kids with brand - spanking new notebooks full of hundreds of sheets of fresh white paper are running frantically to and fro. Teachers, trying to get everything organized and classes started, are up to their elbows in mounds of paperwork. The new clothes, hair styles, and llast but not leastj faces are all a part of the first-of-the-year scene. However, as the first week melts into the second and everyone becomes accustomed to the routine, students take on the appearance and mannerisms of a veteran Wildcat. all , f r -we l 5 Back to School! 9 We've Got . we' M. by fa' fy. ,,,V M..-4 5 i Personality! Graduates! Receiving a high school diploma is always something to be proud of. lt symbolizes twelve years of cooperation, tolerance, learning, and lol coursel partying. Last year's seniors gathered for the last time on june 4, 1984. Plentiful teary goodbyes were evident, but an overall sense of accomplishment, excitement, and optimism prevailed. Last year was even more special than usual because R.H.H.S. had a record number of graduates Q54 to be exactl led by class Valedictorian Zandy Gill and Salutatorian james Turner. Class officers were jill Crosby, Steve Ham, Barbara Galbreth, and Nelson Chapman. Ceremonies were held in the Richmond Hill Elementary School gym. 16 - We've Got Graduates! We've Got . Goals! Sports at RHHS is a subject that is not taken lightly. Under the advice and supervision of coaches lohn Rahn and jimmy Hiers, the Richmond Hill Wildcat's track, softball, baseball, and basketball teams displayed Wildcat courage stamina and excellence against their opposition. Competing against teams from around the Southeast, the 'Cats' teams procured scores that were unbeatable for the opposition. According to Coaches Rahn and Hiers, the Wildcats' success was due to long hours of strenuous exercise and countless executions of standard drills during practice. The boys' varsity basketball team dominated the scene, however, look inside for the whole story. Instructed by Coach John Rahn, the Wildcats' 1983-84 track team en- countered obstacles that were just too large to overcome. Composed of six students, Michael Clark, Lamar Davis, Tony Bennett, Dough Haymans, Ricky Waters, and Jeff Richbourg, the team managed to turn in some statistics that proved they had potential. Doug Haymans threw the shot put 35'2 . Michael Clark, the only senior, leaped for 23'2 in the broad jump. He also ran the 220 and the 100 yard dash. Lamar was close behind with a distance of 22'10 . He also entered the triple jump. Not far down the track, Jeff and Tony were running the mile and two mile races. Running the mile, Jeff finished with a time of 6 minutes and 15 seconds, while Tony followed along with a time of 6 minutes and 22 seconds. The star was no doubt Ricky. He hurled himself 9' in the pole vaulting competition to place third in the region. Keep practicing 'Cats - you're almost there. They were made to endure long tiring hours of practice and coaching, but the players were glad to finish up the season with a respectable record of five wins and six losses. Overall, the Wildcats came in fourth place in our region. Erica Groover led the team with the most doubles, triples, homeruns, and overall hits. Coach jimmy Hiers is expecting this up-coming team to mature into an invincible basketball machine during their varsity years. Dr. Beverly Pestel, assistant professor of chemistry and director of general chemistry, and Dr. Gary lohanning, assistant professor of chemistry, both of Armstrong State College, were welcomed back this year to judge our fair. lmpressed by the quality of the work, Dr. Pestel and Dr, lohanning invited the students to come and visit the chemistry department at the college. Melissa Ansley took first place with an experiment entitled The Effects of Birth Control Pills on Plants. Dawn Finley took second place with a project entitled 'lWhich is the Better Insulator - Gypsum or Wood? Third place this year was a tie between Cheri Anderson and Travis Gerrald. Cheri's research paper was entitled Physiological Disorders, while Travis entered a project called Alcohol and its Effects on Hamsters. Mrs. Hanson, head of Richmond Hill's science department, was satisfied with this year's response but hopes next year's will be even greater. Class! The students that inhabit the halls of RHHS possess an assortment of mannerisms. The scholarly type of student - formerly known as bookworm - can be found eating from a lunchbox, hiding a pencil behind his ear, arguing his point of view, and carrying a stack of books because lockers are too much trouble. The ucool type of fashion-conscious student is observed wearing parachute pants or brilliantly colored-florescent clothing. This type of student has an overflowing locker and never has all the necessary materials for class. He eats lunchroom food when it suits his fancy, and he brings a brown bag filled with goodies like lolly Ranchers. Then, of course, there is the more typical student of average or better intelligence, neatly dressed, slightly unorganized, and fairly punctual. x1,,5iT T RHHS has a variety of students: the brains, the trendsetters, the conscien- tious, the neat, the sloppy, the organized, and the unprepared. Well, at R.H.H.S. the late bird gets something, too - D-Hall. The BD ldefinitely does not stand for delightful. T When the tardy bell rings in the morning, most students are waiting 'to be accounted. However, some students, like April Massey, just can inot seem to make it on time. tHow many was it last year, 47?l Whether lto homeroom in the morning or just to another class, some students find it impossible to be on time. The excuses for tardiness range from car trouble to the famous Amtrak train blocking the road to UI overslept . But no matter which excuse a student gives, a total of four tardies entitles him to one hour of the infamous D-Hall, and infamous it is! Detention Hall is one solid hour of the most dreadful task a student lcould be burdened with - studying. Mrs. Barnes fthe toughest D-Hall sergeant of alll will, rest assured, have a person tortured out of his mind. 'lClass be seated is her favorite lopening line. Genetically superior seedlings planted today can reach a height of 60 feet in 20 years. As we harvest each crop of trees, we replace them three- fold with genetically superior seedlings from our nurseries. These plantations, which pro- vide twice the wood fiber as those from natural stands, along with our seed orchards and nurseries are the labora- tories of tomorrow's forests. We Had Ourselves a Merry CHRISTMAS Little Christmas! ia' a 1 This past Christmas was a very special event for both the students and faculty at RHHS. As usual, there were gifts and a two week vacation to enjoy, but this year we had an extra taste of something that made it all even better - good spirits that seemed to run almost rampant. Students spent hours decorating homeroom doors with Santa Clauses, Christmas trees, and candy canes, while the faculty celebrated together at a Christmas party given after school in Mrs. Morris' room. Georgia Gill sat on Mr. Fields' lap and presented him with the faculty's Christmas present - a gift certificate. Everyone was able to enjoy the school's Christmas tree, a gigan- tic cedar placed in the library. The tree was chosen, cut, and tran- sported by seniors. Afterwards, the tree was decorated with ornaments that were permanently donated by students and their families. Several students contributed ceramic ornaments they had hand-made in Mr. Moeller's art classes. Mrs. Siddall just had to show off her lldogs that Shirley and Tami gave her as a - present. . . On Monday, the executive committee of the Booster's Club was invited to school for lunch and a tour of the facility. Dr. Brewer and the Board of Education were invited to join the faculty on Tuesday for a breakfast sponsored by the lunior and Senior Beta Clubs. They were invited to stay and visit classes for as long as they wished. Wednesday was Student Day. Students were thrilled with no exams and no homework. Support Personnel Day was Thursday. Teacher's aides, cafeteria workers, custodians, bus drivers, parent volunteers, secretaries, and substitute teachers were invited to a reception, which was spon- ls theme for National Education Week sored by the FHA. 188 - National Education Week X tsl sq., K 'W . The frantic footrace to the parking lot is accompanied by the reving of engines, the squeal of tires, and earsplitting blasts of music. Oh, the sights land sounds! of some of our students! This year saw a fad take over many young people in America - the lip sinc contest. Perhaps inspired by last year's video craze, these contests occurred everywhere, from national television to night clubs - even to Richmond Hill High School. HIGH SCHOOL!? That's right, Mrs. Coffieldfs drama students held their own lip sinc performances as a semester test, and some of her students even performed in the library and gym so that the faculty and other students could watch. Oli mall sfyag lt Was a Year to Remember' INTERNATIONAL - The deadlock over arms control became more urgent than ever as technology hurdled forward, creating weapons that may soon be impossible to control, The Super-powers negotiated the issue for months this past year and President Reagan held a face-to-face meeting with foreign minister Andrei Gromyko, the most powerful Soviet diplomat in decades. Unfortunately, little was resolved, One windy night in Central India, a chemical storage tank at a Union Carbide plant sprang a leak and spread a cloud of deadly gas over the city of Bhopal. More than 2,500 people were killed and as many as 100,000 injured. Fears of the possibilities of similar accidents occuring in other places and of the chemical age itself are spreading the globe. A vast drought began to spread famine across central and southern Africa and has killed thousands of people already. Millions more are endangered. Richer nations have responded with huge outpourings of sympathy and relief aid. Corporations, as well as individuals, have contributed food and money. An estimated two billion television viewers around the world saw American athletes capture most of the glory in the games of the Olympiad. American cyclists broke a seventy-two year medal drought, and the four American relay swimmers broke world records. Mary Lou Retton delivered several perfect 10's and won a gold in the all-around women's gymnastic competition. Carl Lewis carried home a triumphant total of four gold medals. The American male gymnasts, led by Peter Vidmar and Mitch Gaylord, even managed to beat the Chinese at their own game and carried home yet another gold medal for the Americans. The partisan crowd in Los Angeles roared with excitement at the awesome demonstrations of these and other American contenders, lust three weeks after the historic operation that prolonged life for Baby Faye, the baboon's heart inside the infant's chest beat for the last time. Still, sorrow could not erase the strides made by the transplant. Fifty-two year old William Schroeder was therecipient of the world's second artificial heart. Four days after it was implanted the larvik-7 heart began to beat perfectly. Murry Haydon became the third artificial heart recipient. While these three operations raised many hopes, they also posed many new questions of medical ethics. NATIONAL - The presidential election smothered the national news media this year. Although Ronald Reagan won re-election Qonly the second president in twenty-eight years to do sol, the Democratic nominees managed to capture a lot of attention. The Reverend lesse lackson was the first black to seriously campaign as a candidate - hopeful, and Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman ever to be a major party's nomination for Vice President. lt looked as if Reagan's challenger, Walter Mondale, would put up a good fight for a while, but Reagan ended up winning with the biggest electoral college landslide in history. After presiding over an improvised indoor Inaugural parade fa bow to record-breaking freezing temperatures in Washingtonl, our President turned to second term business with vigor. He dedicated his term to curbing federal budget deficits, making progress in arms-control talks, and reforming taxes. Reagan said he wishes to achieve a new American Emancipation. Some historians think Reagan has a chance to go down in history as one of America's great presidents, but it will not be easy. Various sects of the American public launched awareness campaigns against pornography, drunk driving, teenage suicide and abortion. Some of the pro-lifers even went so far as to bomb abortion clinics. The U.S. sent a space shuttle on a l'secret mission for the first time and also launched many long-term satellites. Americans couldn't get enough of Trivial Pursuit games, video recorders, and Eddie Murphy. Also on the lighter side, the celebrated VICTORY tour was a huge success, the lacksons 194 - We've Cot the Year in Review! . Ml' .-u..,.af-5. di played three full nights in some of the largest arenas in the country. Prince, Cindi Lauper, Duran Duran, and Lionel Richie dominated the radio scene. Marvin Gaye - a legend in American soul music - died this year, killed violently by his own father. Martin Luther King, lrfs birthday was made a national holiday, the San Francisco 49'ers won the Super Bowl. STATE - Georgia experienced her coldest weather of the 20th century during lanuaryg the temperature in some areas dropped below three degrees. Christmas Day, however, was a warm seventy-five degrees. A documentary of 'The Atlanta Child Murders caused many parents to be outraged. CBS and Atlanta hotlines received more than 100 calls from upset parents. Scholastic Test scores were improved in our school systems this year, and another healthy increase is expected next year. Test results show that students have responded well to a series of tougher standards enacted over the past two years. LOCAL - The Savannah Waterfront Association and other merchants on River Street had the city block off sections of the cobblestone street on weekend nights, They complained that the local teenagers have adopted River Street as a place to drink alcohol and take drugs, cruise in cars with radios blaring, and insult passersby. Merchants also say out-of-town visitors fear venturing onto River Street because of the street-to-sidewalk banter. It was also feared that the cruisers would keep fire trucks, police officers, or ambulances from reaching an emergency if one occurred. A major tourist development made strides in 1984 as Parsons Brinckerhoff of New York opened the Great Savannah Exposition. The multimillion dollar project is designed to enhance the city's already profitable tourist industry and represent a cooperative effort between government and business. The Exposition, which cost over nine million dollars to open, was the first of a three-phase, eight million dollar restoration of the forty acre Battlefield Park. lt was dedicated with much fanfare on February 16, during Georgia Week. Richmond Hill's population increased even more dramatically this year than in past years. The city saw the coming of a number of new subdivisions, restaurants, and private businesses. Many of our students obtained jobs at the new Arbyfs on Highway 17. February 13 brought the installation of our first traffic lights at the intersection of Highways 17 and 144. SCHOOL - Our school took pride in a new gym and an art and music building, and also acquired its first band director, Anthony Logsdon. Our art teacher, Charles Moeller, was hired to design an album cover for the singing group Special Cookin'. Another parking lot and computer lab were also added to our campus. Our lunchroom won first place in district competitions for attractiveness, cleanliness, quality of food, and percent of participation. The Exchange Club of Richmond Hill started the i'Student of the Month program, and senior Kyle Christiansen was our first winner. The student body's annual drive for food to give to the needy during the Thanksgiving holidays was especially successful. As usual, the carnation sale by the Senior Class was quite successful. Everyone delighted in the giving and receiving of flowers on Valentine's Day. As we look back over our '84-'85 school year, we will remember not only the events themselves, but the people we shared them with to make our memories so special. We've Got a Terrific Editor! As I look back over the pages of this year's annual, I remember all of the good times we have had - and all of the rough ones. lt seems like just yesterday that I was in the seventh grade trying my best to survive the hassles of junior high life. My work with the annual staff began in the ninth grade when Tracy Bacenas and I were chosen to be llgophersf' In the tenth grade I helped with layouts, and in the eleventh grade I was promoted to darkroom manager. Being chosen as editor this year was as great an honor as it was a surprise. I thought I would finally get to come out of the darkroom and tell everybody else what to do instead of having them tell me. It didn't work out that way though, it seems as if I spent more time in the dark than ever before. The staff was great I Everyone worked hard. We all pulled together to meet our deadlines, but we did have our share of obstacles to overcome. Pictures were lost, PM Mmvwav ' '--w cameras were seldom loaded correctly, film was exposed, or the pictures were not taken at all. Copy was not written on time, layouts were drawn incorrectly, and it seemed like we would never get rid of all the chocolate bars. In spite of all this and thanks to Ms. Ball's determination, we met all of our deadlines. Without Ms. Ball's constant linaggingf' we could not have gotten through the rough times. I would like to give special thanks to all of the students and faculty that have supported the annual.
