Picruiaiasoui-3 u, ,g e ae asr fi Q To me, being a New Yorker means being tough. It means being able to live in a town that everyone else so easily condemns. lt's watching your house burn because there aren't enough city workers. lt's having to protect yourself because too many cops have been laid off. lt's sitting in a cold, over-crowded class that you don't really want because your grade advisor said your original choice was cancelled. Being a New Yorker means having everything at your fingertips. lt's knowing that you can go sightseeing in your own backyard. It's having the Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty, Fifth Avenue or the Rockerfeller Center Christmas Tree practically in your own neighbor- hood, lt's knowing that you, too, can reach for the stars. Being a real New Yorker means riding the subway at night. lt's walking down the street with your head held high, lt means having the guts to say, I'm glad I'm here and l'm proud of my town! -Maureen Hopkins 'f ,Xl f- ,gi NEVV YORK IS . ., a potpourri - A.
