I I4 fi 7 FRANCIS GRIFFITH Principal l have measured out my life with coffee spoons, says J. Alfred Prufrock in T. S. Eliot's poem. There is something of Mr. Prufrock in each of us. We are prone to live comfortable little lives, thinking chiefly of ourselves, doling out our energy in dribs and drabs, asking What's in this for me? instead of What can I do to help? More than anything else, the world needs men and women dedicated to serving their fellow men without thought of reward or praise. Each of us must rediscover what religion has taught for centuries: that true and lasting happiness comes from helping others. The more extravagantly we throw ourselves into the service of mankind, the more abundantly do we live. Lend your heart and hand, generously and enthusiastically, to making this o better world. Give yourself away. Q,v-uggt wxl MU Cl fllfeilalwil HELEN A. KOCH DEAR SENIORS: It hardly seems possible that your high school days are over! Again you are 'faced with another grave decision-will it be further formal education or will you enter the business world? In either case, I hope Richmond Hill has helped prepare you for the days ahead. They are wonderful days in which to be living, they challenge the best that is in you! May you always practice those qualities of good citizenship, honesty, cooperativeness and depend- ability which we have endeavored to inculcate, and may you always be true to your God and your coun- try. Hold steadfast to your ideals and may this land be a better place because you have been part of it. Congratulations to you the members of the Class of 1954. My very best wishes go with you for success and happiness in your every undertaking. Sincerely, x7 . .xgclminidfra fion As the time approaches for your de- parture from the halls of Richmond Hill, I am reminded of a little verse by R. L. Sharpe: Each is given a bag of tools, A shapeless mass, A book of rules, And each must make, Ere life is flown, A stumbling block Or a stepping stone. May you build wisely and well, and may all good fortune come X our way. 9 Qfffdslz' HERBERT WHITE 1, 1. ,,..., ,ir -- Miss CLAIRE FINN 0 OUR GRADE ADVISERS Wilh grafilude, and in recognition of your years of labor on our behalf, we, the Class of l954, dedicate this book to you. racle .xgcluidem Qi .gg , MRS. During the cold winter months that followed we met many interesting and important people. In first term we didn't do very fnuch to let people know who we were, but Dick Weick started his career in the stock room and Mr. Poppe let us bring our own lunch and drink his cokes during lunch period. E ln September, 1950, Roberta Vlaun, Joan Maloney and Pat Ford were going to run for class office, but much to the disappointment of all, it was decided that the second termers wouldn't be represented on the Student Board. Karla Brinkmann made a hit with cheer leaders, and was taken on trial squad. Pat Ford started her career off with a bang in third term when she was elected class president. Roberta Vlaun followed as Veep, and Joan Maloney proved her ability with her ,sten and typing as class secretary. Karla Brinkmann as treasurer handled all class money. Maryanne Hague was first alternate. When Pat Ford, Karla Brinkmann, and Maryanne Hague became swimming leaders and Dick Heuwetter made the swimming team, we found that we had some aqua-stars in our class. Under the leadership of Pat Ford we saw our first talent show which starred Frank Cappola. He proved he could sing and Pat proved she could run a talent show. ln fourth term, Pat Ford was elected class president. Maryanne Hague made trial squad and learned her cheers, which she practiced vigorously day and night. Al Foster showed his talent in fourth term by getting on the J. V. basketball team and also on Richmond Hill's baseball team. Bob Barr worked behind the scenes as a member of the stage crew, and Pat Norbury made the cheer leaders. ln fifth term, Bob Famiglia started on Domino and worked his way up to Circulation Manager in his eighth term. Karla Brinkmann popped up again in fifth term along with .loan Maloney and Fran Barone, when all three made girls' leaders club. Al Foster played so well on the J. V, team that Hutch decided he was good enough for varsity. Karla Brinkmann really showed her aqua-ability when she made Dolphins. Don Muller and Maryanne Hague starred in their performances in the play, What a Life. Jerry Dorer was elected vice-president of the Newman Club, while Pat Ford held on to the presidency of the class. Supporting her were Maryanne Hague as Veep, and Bobbie Vlaun as secretary. Joan Maloney handled the money and Karla Brinkmann was our first alternate. Sixth term, and we were upper Juniors, with the Junior Prom and the soft music of Tony D's band iust memories to think back on. It was then that Loretta Quinn, although a newcomer to the class, got into leaders' club. Bob Famiglia not only proved he could write, but was elected vice president of Newman Club. Phil Testa and Gerrie Reynolds ioined us that term. Maryanne Hague was class president during those cold months, while Karla Brinkmann was vice-president. Bobbie Vlaun again took notes and minutes and Joan Maloney ime stayed on to take care of money. Pat Ford became City Council Representative of the G.O. It was in our seventh term that we lost Frank Seely. Although Frank is gone, he will always be remembered 'for his big eyes and kind smile. Fran Barone, Joan Maloney and Karla Brinkmann made Varsity in this term and proved they were really athletes. The stage had become something to many of us. The bug got Sal Cornacchio and he danced a much-liked rhumba for the whole school in another one of Pat Ford's talent shows. We had our Senior Prom in seventh term and danced to the music of Billy May's brother, Jimmy May. Don Muller gave us his interpretation of Charley's Aunt and Al Foster came up with his Miracle Basket shot in a game against Adams. Al also played on the All Queens Team and played as though it meant his lite. This was the 'first term in our history when we split up, but it didn't stop us from voting for Bobbie Vlaun as class president and Maryanne Hague as secretary-treasurer. We also put Pat Ford in the headlines, when along with the help of the rest of the school, she was elected vice-president of the G.O. Seniors-what a thrill and only five months more of classes in Richmond Hill! Pat Ford was to lead us through our struggles along with Karla Brinkmann who was to help her out and share the work. Bobbie Vlaun made a hit when she was elected vice- president ofthe G.O. We started a new thing in R.H.H.S. by combining Senior Day and Class Night into one big day. Our show was in the morning and half the class was in it. We had every- thing from serious ballad singing done by Red Coppola, to terrific rhumba-mambo combo by Loretta Quinn and Sal Cornacchio, and a crazy mixed-up skit acted out by Don Muller, Joan Maloney, Mike Dougherty, Dick Weick, and Pat Ford. We decided then and there that there was only one song for our class and one that will always be sung by all of us, Heart of my Heart. Bob Barr stayed behind the scenes as captain of the stage crew. Helping Bob we found Joanie Birkett who came to us in seventh term, and proved she could set a table pretty well for a dinner skit in the Senior Day Show. Senior buttons will be worn by all of us from October l7 until eternity, and even though the hats only got to us on January 4, they were worn Proudly and constantly. Ted Steele'found we were very good dancers and television stars and put us on his show twice. The last time we brought Richmond Hill another trophy to put in the trophy case. Dick Heuwetter and Fran Barone were not only athletes but also very good dancers, as Ted decided when he chose them as the winners of his dance contest on both shows. Karla Brinkmann became girl leader of the Ushers, and president of Dolphins. Pat Norbury did her cheers and cart-wheels well enough to be chosen captain of cheer leaders. As the most likely girl to succeed, Joan Maloney had to represent us at the Business Day Conference held by the Equitable Life Assurance Company in the Hotel Statler. There were but two links left in our high school career-REGENTS and COMMENCE- MENT. We passed over the first bridge and found ourselves at last with diplomas in our hands. Now that graduation has come and gone, we can look back through the book of our memories with much happiness and gratitude for the wonderful four years that we spent. enior ay Wjgijg, Af , iii WW!! IILLCQ FRESHMAN Here you were, the greenest of green freshmen at Annex 56. Naturally you felt as if you were sitting on top of the world, since you were a high school student. It was all so dignified. As time passed you got used to the new procedure and you got a big kick out of going out for lunch and going over to the supreme wonder of learn- ing, the main, for Health Ed. or volley ball practice. The extra-curricular ban was still in effect and you were limited in your activities. The class kept busy, though. At Christmas the choral training put on a program in the assembly. Timidly, Lucille Lohmeier sang Silent Night and Barbara Borhaug and Dick Abernethy also contributed their talents. ln that second term Miss Driscoll's class presented a pantomine acted out to Casey at the Bat. You'll always remember Lou Bello swinging his role of mighty Casey. You got your first taste of student government when you elected your first class officers with Roger Kessel as President. With summer vacation upon you, your freshman year was over and you had climbed one rung in the ladder to your high school success. SOPHOMORE Your first goal was now reached. You were at the main! The excitement of it all made you confident, but again your glorious world collapsed. lmagine everyone calling you freshmen when you were really sophomores. It was so humiliating to be sent to the showers when asking directions to the library. How could those upper termers be so cruel! With all the oppposition, you third termers held your ground and showed your true colors when the after-school ban was lifted. You went all out and proved that you were really on the ball. The Junior Red Cross Council was started with Ronald Kessel, Barbara Felsing, and George Ehrenhaft lending their able service. You were well represented at the P. T. A. Square Dance and the skating party in November. Choral training claimed the talented singers. Rudy Milkey made the class proud when he made Junior Varsity basketball. Lou Bello, Bruce Frank, and the Kessel twins got an extra pat on the back for getting on the swimming team. Came January, the Newman Club Dance, and the Talent Show. Here was another chance for the third termers to show their vitality when Jean Nelson made her dance debut. In January your fourth term officers were elected. Roger Kessel was again president. More honors were bestowed on the class as Bob Schuettinger, Sue Duhan, and Sondra Rothman moved to the Domino pub. office. Eddie Feige, Harold Chorny, Al Citrin and Matty Speier dug out their test tubes and sulphuric acid to ioin forces in the world of Science. Westinghouse gave these embryo scientists good opportunities in training. Another thrill came in Spring to Lou Vecchione, Alice King, and Audrey Maclnnes when they were accepted on cheering squad. Summer was again upon you and now that you were almost upper termers, you antici- pated the thought of your third year, JUNIOR The summer over, you returned to school exuberant over the fact that you could now send newcomers to the boiler room instead of the girl's gym. But you still looked with envy at the seniors. You entered our iunior year with Barbara Greene as class president. ime Bill Smart, Fred Russell, and Dick Abernethy kept the sports lovers yelling at the swimming meets when they made the swimming team. You went through another skating party and Newman Dance. ln December a tre- mendous profit was made by the class on the White Elephant Dance. Ronald Kessel was elected sixth-term president. Now, for the first time, your class made appearance on the G.O. elections. Roger Kessel caused a maior sensation by being elected president. The talent show brought more talent to the spotlight. Bruce Velsor and Mabel Stirn performed and won great recognition. In your sports life, Joan Dempsey and Lorraine Riordan donned their cheering outfits. Bob Flanagan and George Harvey starred on the Basketball team, Beni Krasnow, Bob Culotta, Otto Rogale and Bill Arent scored for the baseball team. The girls were going out for all activities and helped R. H. H. S. to win the P. S. A. L. Trophy. Fred Kirschenbaum and Cecile Kornberg starred in the Spring Play. Arista claimed 50 of your class that Spring and everyone burst with pride. You felt that your world was stupendous! May rolled around and the excitement of the Junior Prom came with the flush of Spring. You all gasped when you saw the drab boy's gym converted to a beautiful dance floor. Your Junior year closed and a busy year was ahead. SENIOR September rolled around again and there you were at that lull between success and desperation, seventh term! lt was torment to be in your senior term and maliciously called onIy a seventh termer. Having changed to annual elections, Carole Wichern was your senior president. Roger Kessel was re-elected 'G.O. president, the first time in history that the same person held top office for two terms in a row. Girl's Varsity claimed your able athletes and Mary Ellen Appleman became president. Carole Wichern was president of Leader's Club. Bette Reichenstein became editor-in-chief of Domino. Ronald Kessel and Elaine Haug were elected Boy and Girl Leader of Arista. Jean Schmitt, Lu Lohmier, Regina Schwarz, and Jean Schneeman made cheering squad. With all the activities you didn't mind the wait, Regents week went by and you were so eager that you passed all your exams iust to become full-fledged seniors. February came and at last your ultimate goal was reached. You were now in the spotlight, at the height of your high school career. You felt so good! The feeling that everyone was looking up to you in envy iust as you had done when you were lowly was unmistakable. Your senior term in full swing, you received your buttons, hats, school rings and senior passes, all of which made your heads swell more and more. Senior Day came and went with a whirl of activity. Everyone was thrilled. Class night was a tremendously successful affair. The Senior Prom topped the highlights with formality and pleasure. Regents slipped by, treacherous as they were. Now on Graduation night you're holding your diploma. Four years flash through your mind, four years of hard work, good fun, and lots of valuable memories. A pang of regret surges through you as everyone screams Good luck. Tears and smiles are all mixed together as you make your way through the well-wishing crowd. PLAY CAST Cinderella . . .
