Those for whom Annex 90 was Hsomething new addedf' climbed up to the fourth floor with great expectations, those for whom 90 was nothing new, just climbed. , That first term saw many memorable events. Our girls were the first to have new lockers. Miss Cook was busy changing our programs. We sent representatives over to the Main to assist in the Block Party, and after many hectic campaign days, the team of Smith, Luhrs and White took over. The term ended with its crowning event-Freshman Day-when all the students were teachers and all the teachers were driven nuts! The Spring of '42 found us installed in Annex 56, the school that was famous for its unusual arrangement of auditorium and gym, separated only by swinging doors. The boys found this architectural idea refreshing, for they discovered they could stay awake in the auditorium by watching the girls going through their antics in the gym. We liked 56 so much that we decided to stay on for another term. February 1943 rolled around and with it the great day. Some of us en- tered the Main with so much enthusiasm that we almost arranged our senior prom that very term. ln the course of the term we met Miss Koch, detentions and Regents, in that order. About that time the weaker sex stopped going to dances with each other. ,Iahn,s became more popular with us, and so . 1.23, ,gf I another term passed. Q ,C . With the fifth term came the GO. JOAN BENSON, returning from a concert tour of the world and being very curious about her former classmates, seats herself opposite the Exalted One who, with great formalitiy, lifts a silken cloth from his crystal ball and dramatically chants his mystic words. The crystal ball begins to glow and a little red and gray school house appears. Seated inside are schoolmarms, LORETTA BETKE and LILLIAN LINDENFELSER and JOAN ZUNDEL still trying to translate Virgil's uAeneid.', Slowly the scene changes and the starched figure of nurse HENTGEN closely followed by Dr. DONALD MACNAIR can be seen disappearing down an immaculate hospital hall. They enter a laboratory and go into a huddle with the research-chemists, MARY HANLEY and JOHN HEIDER, and immediately an argument ensues. As Dr. MACNAIR departs, his lips silently form the words HHe-Who--. But more is to be revealed in Swami FUSILLO'S magic ball. Again the scene changes, this time to the crowded Polo Grounds. Babe WORGUL, on the mound for the Yanks, pitches his Hsecret weaponn ball to Van MAKATURA, who sends it into left field. It looks like a sure-fire carton of Wheatiesl But no! Here comes Pee Wee MENTZ. He makes a spectacular catch off the Pepsi-Cola sign, thus ending the game. With the roar of the crowds, the scene changes again. This time, attention is centered on a press conference. PHYLLIS WHITE, feature story writer of the Daily Unimod fspell it backwardsj, is chatting away to the sports editor, GEORGE KOHLER, about the coming champion tennis match be- tween PAT GULICK and MARION KOPKO. Meanwhile, news comes in YL? on the ticker-tape that EVA LEGROW has been chosen uQueen f of the Pepsodent Adsn and ANN GILLESPIE, the Rheingold Girl of 1960. 4 I Q7 The clamor of the press room fades and is replaced by the 5 X II hustle of backstage at the latest Broadway hit, HA Tree Grows in N ,Q xi Richmond Hill, written by BETTY MAY SMITH. U Norman Ross, Howard Salvesen, Edward Russell 38 ommencemenf - jlze gina! ana! jim gginning The Class of ,lune 1945 leaves Richmond Hill as the first of her classes to have spent its eight terms under her roof during war-time conditions. In September 1941. when we entered Richmond Hill with the timidity of fledglings, the clouds of war were gathering. The storm broke on that fateful Sunday morning, December 7th. 1941, with the treacherous attack on Pearl Harbor by the sons of Nippon. Now, as Commencement Day approaches, the war in Europe has come to a successful conclu- sion and a new era will begin for millions of Europeans, as it will for us as graduates. We have seen the effects of war on our daily lives throughout our high school careers in the form of Jeep and Ambulance Drives, Carnivals for War Funds, Vllar Bond and War Stamp Sales in olhcials. the closing of Annex 56, the special war courses, and in the troubles of our mothers to maintain the standard of living of the family in the face of rationing and soaring prices. All of these things we have taken in stride. with a little complaining here and there sometimes justified and sometimes not. It has pulled at our heart-strings to see our comradesfThayer, Schaudt, Winter, Toner, Jasmine, Ross and Campo-off to do their bit for their country, with special war diplomas in their hands and courage in their hearts. Wle started school with some of these boys as kids in the 1-A nearly twelve years ago. WE SALUTE THEM! We know they will be thinking of us on Commencement Day, just as we will be thinking of them and wishing they were with us to receive their diplomas and share our thrills at graduation. We of the Class of June 1945 have been reared in a world of change-we have seen sweeping economic, political and social changes come about in the mode of living of the average American. We are seeing the crumbling of the Fascist form of government as the result of the determination of the rest of the world to rise against intolerable conditions brought about by hate, avarice and a lust for domina- tion of other peoples. Plans for permanent peace are being discussed daily by government leaders and by the man in the street. Sincere proponents of a world peace plan believe that effective means may be found to prevent wars in the future. Others, equally sincere, feel that such thoughts, while laudable. are but idealistic dreams, and that human nature being what it is, wars will recur. Whatever the future may hold, the world will need real leaders more than it has ever before needed them. It may be that one or more of Richmond Hill's Class of ,lune 1945 will later be involved in making decisions, upon the outcome of which will depend the security of our country. If such be the case. let us hope they will possess the scholarship, leadership, character and courage to act wisely and humanely under all conditions, so that we may then point with pride and say, '6He came from my school, we graduated together in the Class of June 1945?
