Tl?-IELMA MAURER '34 Carfer Donnerly drove buoyanfly down Main Sfreef. Carfer was on his way fo see a cerfain lady. Anyfhing in his way moved quickly info a way of ifs own, wifh fhe excepfion of a small brown and yellow fer- rier. lf held fhe road. Carfer swore vigorously buf soffly under his breafh. Carfer possessed pride - a good deal of if was false, buf neverfheless if was pride. The oafh was accompanied by a nof so soff screeching of brakes and a final noisy crash info a felegraph pole con- venienfly sfanding by. Whew! Thai' muff! , growled Carfer, in an unpleasanf mood. Who would be pleasanf wifh a brand new smashed '8' on his hands? A sharp cry, accompanying a sfreak of flame and gold, fhaf came from a sfore and dashed ouf fo where fhe small brown and yellow bun- dle sfill sfubbornly held fhe road, cuf off any furfher exclamafion. Then, as fhe bil' of flame and gold came fowards him carrying fhe squirming brown and yellow, Carfer forgof fhe demolished '8', fhe cerfain lady. His face changed as if by a miracle, and from his lips came a fervenf, Oh,-lord! Thus fhey mef. Mary, for fhaf was fhe name of fhe bif of flame and gold,-fhaf Muff, who wenf by fhe name of Tommy, and Carfer were driving ouf info fhe counfry. The car, refurned from fhe hands of a clever me- chanic, ran smoofhly. They searched ouf a liffle place under a willow, near fhe mossy banks of a happy liffle brook. lf was spring. The day was perfecf. The fime was perfecf. The place was perfecfg-and Carfer was in love. However, Tommy became hearfily inferesfed in a fly. The fly, as you can easily undersfand, was nof so inferesfed in Tommy. Therefore, friend fly befook himself across fhe happy brook. Tommy, nol' fhe leasf bif daunfed, followed, buf nof so successfully: he fell in. s Oh,-l Hoooo! Carfer! Ohoo-l Tommy! Do somefhing, Carfer! Oh, do somefhing! Up sprang Carfer, a'l' fhe bidding of his love, and ran swiffly fo fhe brook, armed wifh a huge pole. He sfepped on a rock and heroi- cally affempfed fo fish ouf Tommy. The rock, unforfunafely, and much fo Carfer's surprise, was slippery-he fell in! Meanwhile fhe bif of yel- low and brown courageously swam fo shore, lfhe wafer was only six inches deepl fo be hearfily welcomed by his lady. Carfer, quife deiecfed, hauled himself ouf of fhe mud. MEMORIAL TRIBUTE In June, I932, Miss Beard sailed fo England on sabbafical leave. The firsf half of fhe summer she sfudied in Oxford Universifyg fhe sec- ond half, in Cambridge Universify. Then she fraveled fhrough fhe cafh- edral fowns and Scofland before going fo London wifh fhe infenfion of spending fhe fall fhere. In fhe Iasf Ieffer I received from her-if was wriffen af fhe Alex- andra Hofel in London on Augusf 3I-she said: On fhe opening of fhe new ferm I wish fo add my fribufe of love and highesf regard fo fhe memory of Miss Lenf. I know how she will be missed. Besf wishes fo all in fhe English deparfmenf for a pleasanf, suc- cessful ferm! , If was characferisfic of Miss Beard 'rhaf she should- be fhinking of ofhers, nof of herself. On fhe hillside behind Menfone along fhe French Riviera is fhe grave of a disfinguished English hisforian, John Richard Green. On his fombsfone is fhe inscripfion: He died Iearning. A fiffing epifaph for Miss Beard, who affer more fhan forfy years of disfinguished service as an educafor was sfill an eager, enfhusiasfic, youfhful sfudenf would be, She died learning. Miss Beard had a keen infellecf, a broad and fhorough fraining, an indomifable will, and an unflagging inferesf in boys and girls, and fhe mosf effecfive mefhods of developing 'rheir abilifies and characfers. Throughouf her many years in fhe classroom she was fireless in her search for beffer ways fo presenf her subiecf and always had as her highesf aim fo 'reach young people fo live and fo serve. In Your Garden, a song dedicafed fo Mr. Isaac N. Failor, fhe firsf principal of Richmond Hill High School, Miss Beard wrofe: This garden speaks of love and care, And visions fair of fufure days, When seeds once sown shall grow and bear Such flowers as win fhe gardener's praise.'.' Galaway, Jr., if you please, fhough Car- fer fhoughf him somewhaf of a sap, and would have forcefully said so had you asked him. Buf,-if you knew him you didn'f ask him. lf was one of fhose quesfions you didn'f ask, if you know whaf I mean. So, you can see why Carfer was 'down in fhe dumps,' so fo speak, can'i' you? Well, Carfer decided he'd fake a walk around fhe block. Mary lived iusf around fhere,-buf fhaf's quife beside fhe poinf! Carfer was going for fhe walk. H' iusf happened fhaf Mr. Galaway was calling upon Mary, buf fhen fhis was nofhing new: Mr. Galaway usually was. Tommy was chasing fhe cal' on fhe fronf lawn while his Misfress saf on fhe porch wifh Mr. Galaway. Jusf as Carfer approached fhe house, he was very much surprised fo see Mr. Galaway rise and come fowards fhe sfeps. Arriving here, fhe honorable genfleman suddenly somersaulfed in fhe air and landed on his ear in fhe fulip bed, losing one of his shoes in fhe process. Mary broke info a scream and came running across fhe porch fowards fhe unforfunafe Randolph. Carfer ran foo, and was iusf in fime fo cafch Mary, as she fripped over fhe cal' running from friend Tommy, who fhoughf if all greaf sporf. Forgeffing 'rhe caf 'For fhe momenf, however, Tommy 'rurned ev- ery ounce of his small defermined energy upon fhe hopping Mr. Gala- way, who had arisen by fhis fime and was fhus iumping abouf on one foof. Tommy had never, in all his small life, seen anyfhing so invifing as Mr. Galaway's gay besocked fool' dangling in mid air, and prompfly made a dive for if. He was as much surprised as fhe unhappy genfle- man when fhe laffer fell' fhe small needle like 'reefh hanging onfo his foof. Wowl Lef go of me! Lef me go! Two or fhree fugs ldoes if really maffer how many?l and off came fhe sock. Ouf of fhe garden, down fhe walk, and ouf onfo main sfreef dashed fhe specfacular Mr. Galaway, and was gone from sighf and mind, chased by Tommy, gay sock in moufh. All 'rhis fime Mary was safely held in Carfer's arms, where she was desfined fo sfay for fhe resf of fime. Thaf muff, murmured Carfer, as he kissed Mary. Whaf, dear? Asked Mary, snuggling closer.
