Anyfhing in his way moved quickly info a way of ifs own, wifh fhe excepfion of a small brown and yellow fer- rier. lf held fhe road. Carfer swore vigorously buf soffly under his breafh. Carfer possessed pride - a good deal of if was false, buf neverfheless if was pride. The oafh was accompanied by a nof so soff screeching of brakes and a final noisy crash info a felegraph pole con- venienfly sfanding by. Whew! Thai' muff! , growled Carfer, in an unpleasanf mood. Who would be pleasanf wifh a brand new smashed '8' on his hands? A sharp cry, accompanying a sfreak of flame and gold, fhaf came from a sfore and dashed ouf fo where fhe small brown and yellow bun- dle sfill sfubbornly held fhe road, cuf off any furfher exclamafion. Then, as fhe bil' of flame and gold came fowards him carrying fhe squirming brown and yellow, Carfer forgof fhe demolished '8', fhe cerfain lady. His face changed as if by a miracle, and from his lips came a fervenf, Oh,-lord! Thus fhey mef. Mary, for fhaf was fhe name of fhe bif of flame and gold,-fhaf Muff, who wenf by fhe name of Tommy, and Carfer were driving ouf info fhe counfry. The car, refurned from fhe hands of a clever me- chanic, ran smoofhly. They searched ouf a liffle place under a willow, near fhe mossy banks of a happy liffle brook. lf was spring. The day was perfecf. The fime was perfecf. The place was perfecfg-and Carfer was in love. However, Tommy became hearfily inferesfed in a fly. The fly, as you can easily undersfand, was nof so inferesfed in Tommy. Therefore, friend fly befook himself across fhe happy brook. Tommy, nol' fhe leasf bif daunfed, followed, buf nof so successfully: he fell in. s Oh,-l Hoooo! Carfer! Ohoo-l Tommy! Do somefhing, Carfer! Oh, do somefhing! Up sprang Carfer, a'l' fhe bidding of his love, and ran swiffly fo fhe brook, armed wifh a huge pole. He sfepped on a rock and heroi- cally affempfed fo fish ouf Tommy. The rock, unforfunafely, and much fo Carfer's surprise, was slippery-he fell in! Meanwhile fhe bif of yel- low and brown courageously swam fo shore, lfhe wafer was only six inches deepl fo be hearfily welcomed by his lady. Carfer, quife deiecfed, hauled himself ouf of fhe mud.
