center of our school foreword What comes in all shapes and sizes, occurs in crowded communities, attracts the bad and the beauti- ful, has something for everybody, and makes a contin- uous noise? A mall. For several months we have been living with ours, and know of what we speak. We have found that our mall is the hub of our academic universe. It is the vital center from which all kinds of blessings flow. Because its mighty pulsations beat so continuously through our consciousness of Richmond High, we have succumbed to the inevitable, making the mall the theme of our new school’s first, very proud Shield. Accordingly, we have decorated our division pages with malls of foreign climes, none, however, so vibrant as our own. Man! The only thing our mall does not have is pigeons. But then, we have chicks, peacocks and screaming eagles. Further, our mall is skyless and cir- cular, with a library and book room in the middle of it, bevies of classrooms shooting out from its perimeter, attendance and cashier windows along one side of it, rest rooms here and there, food-and-drink machines ditto, a cafeteria that doubles as a study hall, lockers that double as seats for the mighty, and a platform and pit that can be and are used for anything. When infrequently empty, our mall is light, spacious, tame and restful; full, it is a rain-forest in a downpour. Some of us, who carry peace in our hearts, love itas a friendly village square. The timid or reserved or studious or athletic leave it alone, taking refuge outside, in the library or some secret: place where the mall does not reach. But sooner or later, the footsteps of everyone must cross the mall. So here we go! 23
