ng Symbol of Richmond High Foreword We are the last of thirty-two Senior classes of Richmond High School to have set eyes upon the two Shield emblems of our school. One was over the entrance of the old school's auditorium, the other over the door in the library. True enough, we were mere Sopho- mores when we saw them. But we think this distinction worthy enough to make the Shield the theme of our yearbook. There is grandeur in our old Shield emblem. It was meant to be grand. Mr. Bert X. Tucker, Rich- mond High's first principal, who devised the Shield and its symbol- ism, revered education, especially the classics. It was natural for him, therefore, to combine within the symbolism of the Shield the time- less ideals of the ancients and the hard realities of a modern school. The details of this symbolism we have shown on our eight Division pages. The two Shield emblems, their bronze backgrounds somewhat faded after thirty-two years, now repose in a warehouse. We make three noteworthy observations about them. First, their faded bronze hue is the color of our year- book. Second, they were stolen for three weeks during the demolition of the old school and then re- turned. Third, when the new Rich- mond High is built, the two Shields will be set into its walls, to be- speak as always Richmond's tradi- tion of education as Mr. Tucker so nobly envisioned it. 23

26 THE AX The ax symbolizes authority. This is not punitive, primitive authority beyond our control, but merely that which we delegate to our student government and its functionaries. The school administration would be the first to recognize the truth of this. Administration
