Foreword Now that we have reached the end of our school days, brimful of knowledge (as we like to think) and fully instructed, we stand at life's first jumping-off place. The world lies before us, to swallow us or to be our oyster. Fortu- nately, most of ys shall hold the world in abey- ance for some years longer, since we are going to college. This prospect, however, has its own problems, filling us with all sorts of mixed feel- ings. We are proud, scared, eager, hesitant and glad. And why not, we ask, for once again we shall be little frogs in big ponds. And what ponds! The great and small campuses lie all about us. Green and stately California, and tawny, picturesque Stanford stand out in point of eminence, and many of us find these to be the most attractive. Others of us are drawn by the tranquil byways of Saint Marys or Santa Clara, others by the bustle of San Francisco State, still others by the freshness of the University of the Pacific. And so it goes. What we do with ourselves in these new and stirring settings will, in large measure, determine the bent of our lives. This is a truism. What delights us more immediately is the fact that we shall be reaching the prime of our youth and the awakening of new intel- lectual powers. We shall learn, and receive a high polish; we shall play and develop new loyalties. The best of everything seems to await us. To celebrate this momentous step of our lives, this going to college, the Shield staff has chosen as its theme ‘The Intellectual Scrimmage,’ and has adorned the division pages of the Shield with pictures of our pros- pective colleges, along with the insignia and songs of each. Upon these we can gaze and gloat, think and anticipate. But one thing we can all be sure of: in this new adventure our brains shall have no rest, and our nerves shall be stretched to their utmost. Our heretofore coddled, wheedled, prodded and bossed- around selves shall receive a sound drubbing at the hands of the mild, lofty-browed profes- sors. In short, this newest, last and best intel- lectual scrimmage shall be the making of us, or else!
