ADMINISTRATION GOVERNMENT S EOS 4 ACT? Lites COLA SS Gow a5 ORGANIZATION BAe oS ADVERTISEMENTS 140 170 188 250 Foreword Now that we have reached the end of our school days, brimful of knowledge (as we like to think) and fully instructed, we stand at life's first jumping-off place. The world lies before us, to swallow us or to be our oyster. Fortu- nately, most of ys shall hold the world in abey- ance for some years longer, since we are going to college. This prospect, however, has its own problems, filling us with all sorts of mixed feel- ings. We are proud, scared, eager, hesitant and glad. And why not, we ask, for once again we shall be little frogs in big ponds. And what ponds! The great and small campuses lie all about us. Green and stately California, and tawny, picturesque Stanford stand out in point of eminence, and many of us find these to be the most attractive. Others of us are drawn by the tranquil byways of Saint Marys or Santa Clara, others by the bustle of San Francisco State, still others by the freshness of the University of the Pacific. And so it goes. What we do with ourselves in these new and stirring settings will, in large measure, determine the bent of our lives. This is a truism. What delights us more immediately is the fact that we shall be reaching the prime of our youth and the awakening of new intel- lectual powers. We shall learn, and receive a high polish; we shall play and develop new loyalties. The best of everything seems to await us. To celebrate this momentous step of our lives, this going to college, the Shield staff has chosen as its theme ‘The Intellectual Scrimmage,’ and has adorned the division pages of the Shield with pictures of our pros- pective colleges, along with the insignia and songs of each. Upon these we can gaze and gloat, think and anticipate. But one thing we can all be sure of: in this new adventure our brains shall have no rest, and our nerves shall be stretched to their utmost. Our heretofore coddled, wheedled, prodded and bossed- around selves shall receive a sound drubbing at the hands of the mild, lofty-browed profes- sors. In short, this newest, last and best intel- lectual scrimmage shall be the making of us, or else! Dedication We have at Richmond Union High a quiet, scholarly man, who is a dynamo of action. We mean, of course, Mr. Murray Hannah. On the studious side, Mr. Hannah can teach practi- cally any subject which fickle fate decrees. At present he is limited to Algebra, Applied Science, and General Math, but in the past he has taught Physics (his best subject) ahd Biology (his most arduous). On the practical side, Mr. Hannah is head Adviser of our Sen- ior Class. It is this onerous task, so smoothly carried out by Mr. Hannah, which convinces us that Mr. Hannah could lead anything from a choir to an interplanetary expedition, if he had to. There are, however, other compelling ex- amples of Mr. Hannah's know-how. During World War Il he was a lieutenant in the Signal Corps in the Philippines and the South Pacific. At another time he was an engineer for an electrical corporation (where he met his wife, Elinor). Again, he built his house in Berkeley with his own two hands. This last feat he undertook while he was working for his A.B. at the University of California, with the result that the number of years he spent at Cal stretched out to an improbable twelve. But true to form, Mr. Hannah became a Phi Beta Kappa, and his house is both comely and solid (and brightened by his two young daugh- ters, Joan and Dale). In Mr. Hannah's recreations the same dual- ity of thought and action persist. On the one hand, he loves to plunge himself into the sea of electronics, and on the other, to scud be- fore a spanking breeze in his sailboat, which he keeps at Sausalito. His zest for electronics seems inborn, but his mania for sailing stems from his Sea Scout days in San Francisco, when he grew to know the bay as familiarly as any fish. From all these things we are convinced that Mr. Hannah, multiplied a thousand times, would advance American education inestima- bly, just as by himself, he has strengthened the teaching prowess of Richmond Union High. Because we think Mr. Hannah to be the ideal teacher — thorough in his teaching, emi- nently versed in his subjects, considerate of his students, and also because he has been our excellent Senior Adviser and very good friend, we, the Class of 1961, take delight in dedicating our Shield to him. No longer will our voices ring through its buildings, but let us take one more walk together down the halls before the echoes of the footsteps of the June ‘61 Class die away forever. The first step for the 1,061 Sophomores of September, 1958, was to elect class officers. Terry Knapp was elected I-10 President; David Meiser, Vice-President, and Diane Quintard, Secretary-Treasurer. Barbara Ciucci and Lorinda Jensen were elected Girls' League representatives. On September 17, the Girls' League held the annual Sophomore Party to welcome the newcomers. Yell leaders for the class were Barbara Burmester and Ernestine Williams. Sue Pierce was the Sophomore majorette. Showing outstanding ability in Sophomore Football were Roger Martinez, Cliff Greenwood, James Battle, Ura Campbell, and Barry Elison. For the 2-10 semester, the members of the class elected John Power, President; Bob Baroni, Vice-President, and Peggy Lee, Secre- tary-Treasurer, as class officers. Sophomore representatives elected to Girls’ League were Jeannette Halliday, Lynda Spanner, and Dianne Dias. Forget Me Not,'' the first Sophomore dance, was held January 16, 1959, in the girls’ gym. Making the dance a success were Terry Knapp, Shirley Hack, Lorinda Jensen, Diane Swerdferger, Kathy Lehning, and Letha Christian. The Sophomore Class had forty-six students in C.S.F., the honor society. The ''B basketball squad won first place in the NACAL with three-fourths of the squad Sophomores. Serving on the Board of Commissioners were Eileen Lucas, Student Judge; Lorinda Jensen, Commissioner of Social Affairs, and Barry Elison, Commissioner of Boys' Athletics. Juniors assisting Eileen in Student Court were Peter Fostiak and Cathy Murphy, Assistant Judges. Fund raising activities of our Junior Year were the Junior Talent Show, held February 25, 1960, and ‘'Shangri-La,'' the Junior Prom, held March 19, 1960.
