SHIELD OF 130d Volume XLV Published By Richmond Union High School 23rd and Tulare Avenue Richmond, California = SNS tei an san as oe eee att Le iit ene ee wit fas i Table of Contents Foreword Dedication Administration Student Government Seniors . Classes . Activities Organizations Athletics Advertisements Foreword The Class of 1959 has seen so many innovations during our high school career that it would be a simple matter to choose an appropriate theme for our yearbook from the occurrences of the past. But we’ prefer tolook to the future and-so.have chosen for our theme the VIII Olympic Winter Games tobe held at Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe, California, in 1960. Our-decision.is based on the fact that the Olympic Games are a part of the present, sin¢e-preparations have.already begumand have been going on for approximately three years (a period parallel to’our three-year préparation for gradua- tion), and on the further fact that the outcome of the preparations is still in the future, as the outcome of our graduation is still in the future. The VIII Games include competitions in Ice Hockey, Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Alpine and Nordie Skiing, and demonstrations of Dogsled Racing and Curling. Each illustration in the book shows an event in the Olympics and .characterizes a phase of high school life. Accompanying each illustration i§ a photograph taken by Shield photographers at.the actual site of the Olympic Winter Games. Curling, the sport shown on the Administration division page, is the opening”exhibi- tion in the Winter competitions In the same way that Curlng serves to introduce the Olympics our administration serves to introduce us fo education in high school and to prepare us for the future. The government division page illustrates a man skiing. It suggests to us a certain independence and leadership which is characteristic of those who make up our student government, A skating pair is reminiscent-ofthe friendships and fun of Senior year, so we chose them to open the Senior séction. Bobsledding suggests good times and good friends in the same way and serves.to open the Class section. Ice Hockey, a very lively'sport, seems appropriate to open the section given over to a very brisk part of RUHS life, Activities. The Organizations section is introduced by a Dogsled Racing exhibition. All the members of the team pull together, which is something we learn to do through our participation in group projects of the many organizations within the school. A man skiing in the: Men's Slalom illustrates the com- petition of athletics and introduces that section. The obvious choice for the Advertise- ments division page is a girlskating; nothing seems to attract attention more effectively than a pretty girl. Aside from the allegorical tie-ups we have with the Olympic Winter Games, Rich- mond has, in faculty member Miss Margaret Jesseph, a Very real identification with the Games. Miss Jesseph served on the First Aid Team at the trials held in February, 1959, and will serve on the same group at the actual events in February, 1960. All of us will share in the honor bestowed by the International Olympic Committee in selecting California as the site of the 1960 competitions, and a good many of us may be CALLING OLYMPIC 1-9-6-0, which is the telephone number of the headquarters in Squaw Valley, as well as the theme forithis, our 1959 Shield. Dedication Generally we associate genius with the arts or with letters and science, but rarely with teaching. Yet teaching is an art and has its geniuses. The geniuses of teaching, needless to say, do not grow on trees, and thrice lucky are they who have had such a teacher. But such unusual luck is not un- known at Richmond Union High School, for we have one of these natural-born, superlative teachers in Mrs. Dorothy Gemmer. For thirty-eight years Mrs. Gemmer has taught us French, Spanish, and Art Appreciation. But the fulness of her teach- ing power, like a great flood, overflows the boundaries of mere language and art, and engulfs everything that holds interest for man. Thus, she has stimulated us to search for beauty and the meaning of ideas, to read history, to examine the issues of government, politics and society, and most wonderfully, to create in ourselves a living, lively system of values. Because Mrs. Gemmer is a warm, happy, level-headed person, brimful of charm, she has probably heard as many tales of woe, elation, and all the states in between, as any practitioner of psychology. And she has not just listened to these tales, but whenever it seemed necessary, has helped many a nameless pupil to surmount the difficulties which blocked his path, whether it be to college or some other goal. The matchless excellence of Mrs. Gemmer's teaching typi- fies her life as a whole. A thousand things engage her. For example, she takes care of her husband, Will, like a king; treats her son, Bill, like a prince; looks after her home like a palace. Her garden blazes with color, her dinners are banquets, her conversations are sheer delight. Further, she knits like lightning, plays bridge like Goren, and reads a book a night. In her spare time she studies Italian. She is also a great voyager. Paris is her city, and French, so the Parisians think, her native tongue. Actually, Mrs. Gemmer is a native of San Francisco, where she attended elementary school. Her high school days were spent in Santa Cruz. Later, at the University of California she received her A.B. and M.A. degrees in History. (French was then only a sideline.) Her first job was at the high school in Sebastapol, California, where, juggler-like, she taught Civics, Economics, History, Spanish and French. After two years of this, in 1921, she came to R.U.H.S. to teach Spanish. But not for long. The fates conspired to drop advanced French into her lap. Then one day while she was vacationing in Spain, she thought it her duty to make a fly- ing visit to Paris. After all, she was now teaching advanced French. So she went to Paris and has never recovered. Like a happy bee in a hollyhock, she remains perpetually inebriated with the elegant Gallic spirit. © This proved to be yet more luck for us. For we find that we glory in such personal things as the pure French style of her utterance, her wit, her manner, and her impeccably soignee grooming. All this, mind you, in addition to her intuitive, spontaneous teaching which not a single one of her pupils can ever forget. Need any more reasons be given why we, the June Class of 1959, dedicate our Shield to this most extraordinary teacher and well-loved friend, who has chosen to bid R.U.H.S. adieu this very June when we also shall say goodbye? Administration MR. DAVID C. GRAY Principal | hope each of you at this graduation time will look back upon your high school days with a feeling of real satisfaction. Mr. James Brien, Instructional Vice-Principal Changes in the Lineup Never before has our school suffered such a raid on its administrative brass. This brass, each worth his weight in gold, includes Administrative Vice-Principal William Outman, Instructional Vice-Principal James Brien, Dean of Boys, Robert France, and the Chairman of the Boys’ P.E. Department, Samuel Teese. Mr. Outman left in February to become the Principal of Richmond Union Evening High School, an institu- tion whose five thousand grown-up students pursue the delights of education with a fervor unknown to their children. Mr. Outman labored at R.U.H.S. for eighteen years, successively as P.E. instructor (baseball coach), Dean of Boys, and Vice-Principal. While this varied: career of Mr. Outman appears to have been a rather strenuous preparation for his new position, it was nevertheless a career full of service, friendliness and accomplishment, from which nearly two decades of Richmond's students and teachers have hugely benefitted. In him the aging pupils of the Evening High School have gained a trim, athletic principal who will never con- fuse batting averages with grade point averages. Of our departing administrators, Mr. Brien is making the greatest change. He is going to Chico, California, to become Director of Education of the Chico City Schools. This appointment of Mr. Brien comes as a sad surprise to his countless Richmond friends, because Mr. Brien is,a Richmonder, born and bred. A graduate of R.U.H.S. and U.C., Mr. Brien returned to his old high school in 1940 to teach. He taught many things: English, History, Journalism, Civics, and Senior Problems. He also served as Chairman of the Social Studies Department for four years, and Vice-Principal for eight. He had his hand in pies too numerous to relate. Although these pies are probably not comparable in size to those which he will bake in Chico, they nevertheless attest Mr. Brien’s great gift for administrative cookery, which R.U.H.S. shall sorely miss. Mr. France is going to Harry Ells High School, of all places, to become Instructional Vice-Principal. This is a severe blow to us, perhaps a mixed relief to him, and most certainly a dashing feather in the Ells academic cap. For Mr. France knows his stuff. When he first came to R.U.H.S. in 1943, he taught English and History. Soon his abilities made him-chairman of the Social Studies Department. Then his special gifts for dealing with students were recognized, and he became a counselor. At the same time he conducted advanced classes in Oral English, and single-handedly put R.U.H.S. on the debating map of California. Finally he was appointed Dean of Boys, and though the earth did not tremble, many boyish consciences did. All in all, R.U.H.S. points with pride to Mr. France and cannot help but feel that it now has a vested interest in the fortunes of its rival, Harry Ells. Mr. Teese is making the saddest change of all, as far as the students of R.U.H.S. are concerned. He is leaving us to go to El Cerrito High School. (Long Pause.) How he can do this is beyond our comprehension. However, since he is going there to be Dean of Boys, the nature of his new job rather lightens the shock of his departure. After all, he most likely will not be seeing El Cerrito's best side, nor will El Cerrito necessarily be seeing his. Nonetheless, in no sense can we agree that they deserve each other. But since El Cerrito is the path pointed out for him by destiny, we must concur with the worldly viewpoint that Mr. Teese is on his way up. And certainly none is more worthy of promotion. He has proved this by his exemplary job as P.E. instructor (and swimming coach), and as Chairman of the Boys' P.E. Department. Therefore, we wish him all the luck in the world, but we refuse to say goodbye. Mr. William Outman, Administrative Vice-Principal; Mr. Robert France, Dean of Boys; Mr. Samuel Teese, Chairman of Boys’ P.E. Department. This institution held great promise for the 953 sophomores. On September 18, 1956, the Girls' League honored the sophomores by giving them a welcome party. They were acquainted with Miss Vera Crosby, Mr. Jeff Yates, Mrs. Lila Reinertson and Miss Grace Condon, their counselors. The first step toward becoming part of the school was the election of class officers. Elected to the office of 1-10 President was Gonzalo Rucobo. Donna Washburn was chosen as Vice-President and Sandra Beauchamp, Secretary-Treasurer. Isabel Ynzunza, Evelyn De Fias and Mickey Gwathney were elected to represent the girls on the Girls' League Council. Entering into activities were Billie Sue Hamrick, Dorothy Garland and Barbara Williams, who were chosen as yell leaders. Joan Cline represented the sophomores as a majorette. Some 47 sophomores went out for football. Some of those showing great promise were Gerald Higgenbotham, Horace Hopson, Jim Dotson, Charles Dahme, Gonzalo Rucobo, Herbert Purvis, Richard Noble, Jim Roark, Ed Power and Bill Newcomb. Becoming more familiar with the campus, the Class of '59 entered its 2-10 semester. Don Andrews, President; Irene Herrera, Vice-President, and Marilyn Marsh, Secretary-Treasurer, were the officers chosen to head the class. The same girls returned to the Girls' League Council. The first social event sponsored by the class was ‘'Bali-Hai'', the Sophomore Hop, May I7, 1957. The California Scholar- ship Federation was honored by having 57 sophomores take part. Basketball season proved to be very exciting. While we had but one member on the Varsity, our class saw the Junior Varsity capture first place in the ACAL. Bill Schappell and McDonald Crane were two of the more prominent players. The ''B Basketball team had 10 members to represent our class. Sophomore boys entered swimming and track with much interest also. Sixteen sophomores played on the Junior Varsity baseball team. Some of the outstanding players were John Nystrom, Larry Sheppard, A. L. McDaniels, Horace Hopson and Bob Gonzales. After a summer's vacation, the class of 1959 re-entered the halls of Richmond High as upper classmen. The school, no longer an unfamiliar and frightening place, was the scene of a whirlwind of Junior activities. Leading the I-I1's were Fred Youngblood, President; Marilyn Marsh, Secretary-Treasurer, and Irene Herrera, Vice-President. Girls' League representatives were Evelyn De Frias, Mickey Gwathney and Bobbie Bishop. Gloria Sims honored the class by serving on the Board of Commis- sioners as Prosecuting Attorney. Yell Leaders representing their class were Effie Holmes and Brenda Gregg. Joan Cline and Sandy Wright joined the major- ettes. Representing R.U.H.S. at Boys' State was Darryl Ott. The Rally Committee voted in 16 members. Thirty-eight members were honored to be on C.S.F. Nearing their Senior year, the Juniors entered their 2-11 year with great anticipation. Officers for the term were Bob Longmire, President; Barbara Branum, Secretary-Treasurer, and Eddie Flores, Vice-President. Girls' League representatives for the term were Jackie Mesker, Sandy Wright and Mary Lou Felder. Working hard to raise money for their Senior year, the Juniors presented the Junior Talent Show March 27, 1958. The high- light of the Junior year was Blue Twilight, the Junior Prom, which was held March 22, 1958. In the field of sports, the Juniors outdid themselves by contributing seven members to the Varsity Football, while Junior Varsity had such outstanding players as Bob Longmire, Dixon Shelton, James Williams, Jim Dotson, Ed Power, Richard Noble and Bob Gonzales. Varsity Basketball came in second place in the ACAL, with Junior members of Jim Preston, Willie La Nere and McDonald Crane. Winning 18 out of 21, the Junior Varsity Basketball Team had an impressive season with such players as Bob Bayless and Sam Smith. Fred Sheffer, Jim Preston, Bob DeMarse, Mike Koepke, Jim Dotson, Walt Freeman, Lawrence Thompson and Gerald Higgin- botham led the Juniors on the Varsity Track team. ''B' Track had five Junior members, Lumus Russell being outstanding. Members on the Varsity Swimming were Don Ciucci, Gary Webber, Ed Hoeffer and Dave Severn. In Varsity Baseball Juniors were represented by Leroy Lynch, Bob Gonzales and Horace Hopson. Wes Greenwood and Joe Knox were two of the members contributing to the Junior Varsity Baseball. The Senior year, the most memorable year of all, is contained in the following pages. We invite you to recall through these pictures the accomplishments that make us proud to belong to the Class of 1959 and the pleasurable activities that will make this year live in our memories forever.
