Needless lo say, her classroom virluosily is buf one of lhe many fine lhings which have helped lo make Miss Slocklon's life so full. She has, for example, always been a devolee of nalure. Many are lhe pack-lrips she has made inlo lhe high Sierras and many lhe camps she has sel up in oul-of-lhe-way places. She has fished counlless slreangs wilh experl finesse and swum many rivers wilh experl slrokes. She also has a perfecl passion for flowers, bolh wild and cullivaled. Here, il musl be fold, she excels as a cook. Her sluffed squab is regarded by her friends as nolhing shorl of fabulous. Al home she also likes lo lry her hand al wriling and waler-colors. The oulline of Miss Slocklon's life is as inleresling as her accomplishmenls. She received her early schooling al Los Banos and lhen allended college al San Jose Slale where she prepared lo become an elemenlary leacher. Bul afler savoring elemenlary leaching for lhree years, she was cerlain fhaf il was nol for her. So she gave il up, look a business course and worked for lhree years in a business office. This, loo, was nol wholly lo her lasle. Then, during World War l, she wenl lo Washinglon, D. C., and worked in lhe War De- parlmenl. Aller lhe war she allended lhe Universily of Cali- fornia where she received her A.B. degree and secondary leaching credenlial. Armed wilh lhese, Miss Slocklon wenl lo Angels Camp, laughl lwo years, and finding lhal lhe arl of leaching commercial courses was an exacling and pleas- ing one, finally came, in January, l925, lo Richmond Union High School where she has laughl her speciallies ever since, bolh lo boys and girls and lo adulls al nighl school. During lhese evenlful years Miss Slocklon look upon her- self lhe rigorous lask of rearing her five molherless nephews. Indeed, her boundless affeclion for her family and her uller- ly loyal devolion lo her friends have been lwo of her oul- slanding lrails. Bul she is also dislinguished by anolher, equally slrong lrail and lhis is her fearlessness in advocal- ing ideas which she slrongly believes lo be righl. Now, on lhe Golden Anniversary of Richmond Union High School, Miss Slocklon has decided lo relire from her long career of leaching, lhirly-seven years all lold. FOREWDRD We, the Shield Sfaff of 1957, were nol' confronfed wi+h 'l'he greal' problem of selecting a suirable theme. As s'l'uden1's in Journalism I, we became aware of fhe faci' fhal' l957 marked the 'fiffiefh anniversary of Richmond Union High School. After deciding lo use 'lhis anniver- sary as our +heme, we were faced wi'I'h the fask of gafher- ing malerial in order lo presenl' a complere resume of filly years al' Richmond Union High School. We 'fell' 'lhal' +he hisfory of our school could be fold besl' rhrough old picfures. The +ask of gafhering fhese piclures was a great one, and il' involved l'he willing assis'l'- ance of reachers, alumni, and school personnel. The pictures, of course, could nol 'l'ell lhe complete slory of our school: +hese had 'ro be supplemenfed wirh ad- dilional informalrion aboul' 'l'he hislory of Richmond High. Our nexl' problem was how +o arrange +he collecred material. The answer 'ro fhis was a simple one. Afler each division page, we presenfed in picrures a shorf hisfory of l'he subiecl' of 1'ha'I' particular secfion. The division pages themselves parallel rhe early years a+ Richmond Union High School wifh school life as il' is 'I'oday. Afler several weeks of delving info 'rhe hisfory of Rich- mond High School, we uncovered many phases of fhis hislory which had nor been considered in fhe original plan of 'lhe book. I+ was because of lhese discoveries l'ha+ we decided fo add a supplemenf depicting bygone days a'r our school. We now presenl' ro you 'lhe hisrory of Richmond Union High School on fhis, lhe fiftieth anniversary of our school- OUR GOLDEN YEAR. Sill! The rock was donated by the Classes of December, 1933, jujne, 1934g January, 1935, and June, 1935. The Senior Class of 1935, hav' ing made known its desire for a suitable rock, was told of one to be found in Point Richmond. Through the cooperation of the Standard Oil Company and the Santa Fe, the rock was hauled from the Point, beyond the Standard Oil and Rod and Gun, to where it could be reached by truck. The truck then brought the rock to the site where it now rests. Ji, u ..,, . ,V I V 2252? l I J ' .2 ' ,, ' ' ' H .ig ,. ,ff I ,rm er -ff-1-WW-r- 177r4!4i6f-JW41 'vggwn-'fr 1 ,-ff!
