Always wifh fhe inferesfs of fhe sfudenfs in mind, Mr. Tucker and fhe faculfy wisely planned a curriculum fhaf would besf rneef fhe needs of fhe graduafes. Because of This foresighf, many RUHS graduafes foday have achieved success in fhe professions, in business, and in indusfry. Mr. Tucker, a graduafe of fhe Universify of Kansas, came fo California in fhe early l900's and affended fhe Universify of California. Affer receiving his 'reaching credenfial a+ fhe Universify, he wenf fo Sanfa Maria, California, where he faughf science. He fhen moved +o Chico, where he was principal of fhe local high school. ln fhe early summer of I907, Mr. Tucker received word 'rhaf a posifion was open af a newly organized high school in Richmond. Affer correspondence wifh fhe Richmond Dis+ric+'s supervisor, Walfer T. Helms, Mr. Tucker accepf- ed fhe posifion of principal of Richmond Union High School. He fhen began fhis fhirfy-six years of service af Richmond Union High School. During Mr. Tucker's principalship, RUHS developed info a school where unify was fhe key word in a school fhaf belonged fo fhe sfudenfs and faculfy. Even affer his refirennenf in I943, Mr. Tucker confinued +o be acfively Inferesfed in fhe affairs of fhe high school. Jusf one monfh before his deafh in I945, he affended an Oiler foofball game af fhe school he loved, fhe school 'rhaf owes so very much fo him. FIFTY YEARS OF DAVID C. GRAY I943 - I Q. 4,4 ii i if . - --v- BERT X. TUCKER I907- I 943 PRINCIPALS DAVID C. GRAY David C. Gray has served as principal of Richmond Union High School for fourfeen years. During fhis fime, he has never failed fo lend a helping hand fo fhose seek- ing advice. Mr, Gray, a nafive of Vina, California, affended fhe local grammar school prior fo enfering Heald's Business College in Chico. ln I92I, affer working as a sfeno- grapher, he decided fo resume his educafion. He spenf fhe nexf years in diligenf work af Los Molinos High School. In I923, Mr. Gray enfered fhe Universify of Califor- nia, on a scholarship, as an accounfing maior. Four years lafer he received a Bachelor of Science degree and was ready fo begin his feaching career. Mr. Gray's firsf feaching posifion was af Richmond Union High School, fo which he came Augusf I5, I927, fhe day fhaf classes for fhe Fall semesfer began. He was an insfrucfor in bookkeeping in fhe Commercial Deparf- menf of fhis growing high school. In I93I, Mr. Gray became Dean of Sophomores.'Two years lafer he was appoinfed Dean of Boys and Chair- man of fhe Commercial Deparfmenf. From I937 fo I943, he aided Principal Berf X. Tucker as Vice Principal, The Fall of I94O saw Mr. Gray as acfing principal while Mr. Tucker was on leave of absence. Wifh fhe re- firemenf of Mr. Tucker in I943 Mr. Gray became princi- pal of Richmond Union High School. Over fhe inferven- ing period of fourfeen years, he has esiablished himself as a frue friend of fhe sfudenf body.
