Foreword Like all Shield Sfaffs, we, fhe I956 sfaff, were defefmlned fhaf our book should be differenf. Alfhough if is HUG fhaf W9 already had 'rhe disfincfion of puffing ouf 'rhe firsf real year book, we wanfed somefhing more, somefhing fhaf wOUlCl make our book +ruly unique. To achieve fhis added somefhing, we selecfed a plaid cover, a cover fhaf all pasf Shield Sfaffs wanfed, buf were unable fo have. Around 'lhis cover we buill' a fheme, and whal' could be more appropriafe fhan a Scoffish fheme fo go wifh a plaid cover? So, fo carry ouf our idea of a Sco'H'ish fheme, we found ourselves plunged in fhe fradifions of Scofland and immersed in a sea of folk songs. We found, for example, fhaf fhe nafional game was golf, and whaf song would beH'er sui+ 'I'his rafher leisurely sporl' 'rhan Flow Genfly, Sweef Affon, Among Thy Green Braes ? Thus, Flow Genfly, Sweef Af+on became fhe division page for afhlefics. The Classes reminded us of fhe words in Loch Lomond which say, Oh! Ye'll Take 'rhe High Road, and l'll Take +he'Low Road . So, Loch Lomond had fo be fhe division page of fhe Classes. Then, 'rhe words of Auld Lang Syne , we fhoughf, sug- gesfed memories of fhe many clubs and organizafions af Rich- mond Union High School. So, Auld Lang Syne was selecf- ed for fhe division page of Organizafions. Again, whaf would school be wifhouf ifs social life and fhe many acfivifies fhaf go on fhroughouf fhe school year? Wifh 'rhis in mind, Comin' Thro' fhe Rye was chosen for fhe Acfivifies division page. Yef again, in selecfing a division page for fhe Adverfisemenfs, we liked My Bonnie Lassie because of ifs words: I'lI Meef Her af fhe Shore, Playin' fhe Pipes for Her, Dressed in a Kilf and a Tamo-'Shanfer foo . Lasf, buf mosl' imporfanf, we had 'lo deal wifh The Senior Secfion. Here we found fhaf The Campbells Are Coming expressed fhe redoubfable Senior spirif. lf is our fond hope fhaf in fufure years, whenever you hap- pen fo hear fhese ScoHish funes, you will remember 'the good days you spenl af Richmond High. This, af any rafe, was whaf we had in mind when we chose SCOTLAND IN SONG as 'rhe 'theme for fhe I956 Shield,

Culberfson Ded'calion ll is always a rafher momenfous occasion when a leacher, affer many long years of working wifh young people, decides fo give lhem up, as if were, and refire. If is momenlous, of course, for lhe leacher, because a big bend in fhe road of life has been reached. Bul if is momenlous for everybody else, as well, Sfudenfs lose a feacher lo whom skill and wisdom have become second nalure, The faculfy loses a fried and lrue friend. And fhe school as a whole loses ifs chief source of sfrengfh and sfabilily. Imagine, fhen, fhe loss lo Richmond High when nof one, buf four such leachers refire al,fhe same lime! To lhese four, Mrs. Rulh Sikes, Mr. Marlin E. Salmi, Miss Helen E. Brooke and Mr. Francis L. Culberfson, we, lhe Class of I956, dedicale our Shield. MRS. RUTH SIKES Mrs. Rulh Sikes, chairman of fhe Mafhemafics Deparlmenl, has laughl mafhe- mafics al Richmond High for lwenfy-eighl years. Now lhal she is leaving us, Algebra is bound lo lose a cerlain elegance and Geomelry a cerlain ease. For Mrs. Sikes is a very gracious lady whose leaching has always been a miracle of clarify, paflence and sweef good nafure. She could make even dullards under- sfand how a man can walk A miles, spend B dollars and come oul len miles ahead and fwenly dollars fo lhe good. We shall miss her quiel, unassuming ways, her pleasanl humor and her willingness lo suffer fools gladly. Our only comforl is fhal Mr. Sikes will sfill be here lo lef us know from lime fo lime how his lady fares and how her garden grows. For we undersland lhaf Mrs. Sikes is slill inferesled in lhings growing, alfhough she has exchanged sludenls for ionquils and square roofs for fangled ones. MR. MARTIN E. SALMI Mr. Marlin E. Salmi, insfruclor in Machine Shop and Aufo Mechanics, came lo Richmond High fhirfy-five years ago. He had always wanled lo be a feacher and he furned ouf fo be one of fhe besl' our school ever had. He sef his sland- ards high and mafched his sfandards wifh his skills and ceaseless producfivify. In all his dealings wifh sluclenls his iuslice was celebraledg in all his associafions wilh fhe faculfy, his friendliness was a byword. The sparrows lhal lived and flew aboul in his shop, as il il were fheir own privale world, will miss him al feeding- lime. And his boys, who rejoiced in his generous praise, will miss him all lhe lime. Indeed, our whole school will miss him. Buf we are nof so sure lhaf he will miss us. We expecl fhaf his knowledge and skill will be lapped by indusfry, fhaf he will spend happy days af his home in lhe counlry and fhaf he will read even more widely and deeply lhan he does now. In a way, Mr. Salmi's refiremenl is a myfh. He is merely beginning a new career. MISS HELEN E. BROOKE Miss Helen E. Brooke says: ll's been fun! This sfafemenf covers a good deal of fun - forly years of il. Miss Brooke firsl laughl in a one-room schoolhouse in Ohio, nexl in Roosevell and Longfellow Junior High Schools in Richmond, and fhen, for lhirly-lwo years in Richmond High. Mosf of fhese years Miss Brooke laughl hisfory and served as chairman of fhe Social Sfudies Deparfmenf. The lasl fourfeen years she spenf as Dean of Girls. Whal a leacher and WIIBI' 6 Dean. Things happened wherever Miss Brooke was, lessons were learned and mankind slepped lively. Her fairness won all, her humor floored all, her penefra- lion convinced all lhal she knew everylhing and had a hearf as large as an ocean. We hafe lo see her go, buf we cannof begrudge her her new freedom lo fravel, lo calch up wilh her family and lo go again and again fo her beloved Sierras. Goodbye, Miss Brooke. ll's been fun and we love youl MR. FRANCIS L. CULBERTSON Mr. Francis L. Culberlson, leacher of Mechanical Drawing, has laughl' scI1fD0I for-forly years all fold, lhirfy of lhem af Richmond High.
