FOREWORD Remember! Turn back lhe hands ol lhe clock be- lore lhe lime ol our marriages, our lravels, our suc- cesses, our lailures, or serious lhoughls ol worldly mallers enlered our minds. Go back lo lhe lime when our only real problems were lhe lollowing day's exams, lhal miserable spal wilh lhe boy friend, and, ol course, our honesl obsession lhal nobody really underslood us. Remember our high school years and lhe hall- lrighlened, hall-elaled leeling which engulfed us when we enrolled as Sophomores. We were bul liny minnows emplied inlo lhe Allanlic Ocean, and lhe lhree grim years ahead seemed endless. How- ever, we were growing, and our oullook on lile soon changed. Suddenly we were Juniors and sure lhal Richmond High had been buill expressly lor us and would remain slanding only lor as long as we, our- selves, remained. Bul lhe pure lanlasy ol lhis beliel and lhe lrue meaning ol adullhood were realized as soon as we were Seniors, sophislicaled beyond sophislicalion. ll was during our Senior year lhal a lew ol us be- came members ol lhe Shield Slall and chose lo de- picl lhe laller parl of lhe year I954 in our year- book wilh a sophislicaled molil, as belilled our slalus in school. Hence, our lheme, Sophislicaled Send-off . We decided lhal our Shield would be supreme among yearbooks, and supreme il cerlainly was, in addilion lo being downrighl revolulionary! Firsl ol all, we changed our melhod ol publishing from engraving lo lilhographyg lechnical lerms which simply meanl lhal our yearbook would have pro- lessional-lype layouls allraclively arranged, inslead ol pages ol piclures piled upon piclures. We were given a lree rein concerning makeup, and, unlike lhe Shield slalls before us, were able lo cul lhe piclures inlo circles, reclangles, hexagons, and numerous olher designs which proved pleasing lo lhe eye. Our nexl goal was lo give lhe book a hearl . We did lhis by placing variously spaced wrilings, wilh a delinile purpose and meaning, lhroughoul lhe Shield. This lrend, also, was enlirely new. Our Shield was lhe largesl in lhe hislory ol lhe school, and also, we haslened lo add, lhe besl. The prool lhal lhis is so leaps oul, we lhink, lrom every page ol our book!
