Turn back lhe hands ol lhe clock be- lore lhe lime ol our marriages, our lravels, our suc- cesses, our lailures, or serious lhoughls ol worldly mallers enlered our minds. Go back lo lhe lime when our only real problems were lhe lollowing day's exams, lhal miserable spal wilh lhe boy friend, and, ol course, our honesl obsession lhal nobody really underslood us. Remember our high school years and lhe hall- lrighlened, hall-elaled leeling which engulfed us when we enrolled as Sophomores. We were bul liny minnows emplied inlo lhe Allanlic Ocean, and lhe lhree grim years ahead seemed endless. How- ever, we were growing, and our oullook on lile soon changed. Suddenly we were Juniors and sure lhal Richmond High had been buill expressly lor us and would remain slanding only lor as long as we, our- selves, remained. Bul lhe pure lanlasy ol lhis beliel and lhe lrue meaning ol adullhood were realized as soon as we were Seniors, sophislicaled beyond sophislicalion. ll was during our Senior year lhal a lew ol us be- came members ol lhe Shield Slall and chose lo de- picl lhe laller parl of lhe year I954 in our year- book wilh a sophislicaled molil, as belilled our slalus in school. Hence, our lheme, Sophislicaled Send-off . We decided lhal our Shield would be supreme among yearbooks, and supreme il cerlainly was, in addilion lo being downrighl revolulionary! Firsl ol all, we changed our melhod ol publishing from engraving lo lilhographyg lechnical lerms which simply meanl lhal our yearbook would have pro- lessional-lype layouls allraclively arranged, inslead ol pages ol piclures piled upon piclures. We were given a lree rein concerning makeup, and, unlike lhe Shield slalls before us, were able lo cul lhe piclures inlo circles, reclangles, hexagons, and numerous olher designs which proved pleasing lo lhe eye. Our nexl goal was lo give lhe book a hearl . We did lhis by placing variously spaced wrilings, wilh a delinile purpose and meaning, lhroughoul lhe Shield. This lrend, also, was enlirely new. Our Shield was lhe largesl in lhe hislory ol lhe school, and also, we haslened lo add, lhe besl. The prool lhal lhis is so leaps oul, we lhink, lrom every page ol our book! Dedica'rion ........ ROBERT PASCOE Primaril Mr. Roberi Pascoe is a man's I man, brglve, hones+, and solid. His common sense and freedom from personal angularifies make him a narural refuge for sfudenfs and +eachers who need advice and help. Too sane, himself lo creafe messes, he seems always fo be called 'upon 'lo clean up +he messes of ofhers. For eighleen years he did iusl' fhis al Richmond High, firsl' as coach, fhen as dean and finally as offen as vice principal. His manner was very brisk and cleansing as fhe norfhwind. He lefl' no- body in lhe dark as +o where he sfood. His characfer generafed a moral force +ha+ kepf Richmond High well-ordered and harmonious lhroughoul The years of his service here. He sails +he boal +ha+ he buil'I' wifh his own hands. He works on his impressive collecfion of s+amps and coins. Some say +ha'l' he can do anyfhing, and fhey may be right Bu'f a mere lisl' of Mr. Pascoe's capaciiies do nor convey fhe man, his down-+o-ear+h humor his ease of manner, and his rafher leonine a'Hi- 'lude of being monarch of all he surveys. One mus+ know him +o appreciafe him. We, +he February Class of l955, have known Mr. Pascoe well. Q6 5 Editors' Farewell You have iusf finished fhe Shield, a yearbook which porfrays a full semesfer, high- lighfing fhe evenfs you'll wanf fo remember, a yearbook which confains fhe very hearfs of fhe fourfeen people who creafed if. This Shield expresses fhe enfire concenfrafion of ifs sfafif, fhe very hard work of ifs advisor, and fhe whole-hearfed co-operafion of Richmond High sfudenfs and faculfy. lf was arranged and published wifh you, ifs readers, in mind, and if is fhe sincere wish of fhe Sfaff fhaf fhis Shield meefs fhe expecfafions you, unknowingly, have sef. The Shield Sfaff is more like a family, sfriving foward a single goal, fhan a class, and undoubfedly fhe Shield pressroom has wifnessed all sorfs of family-squabbles. There were fimes when fhe arrival of a deadline made fhe explosion of fhe afomic bomb seem mild compared fo fhe fumulf of fhe pressroom. Since fime and fempers were shorf, if was nof unusual for copy sheefs, layoufs, and picfures fo fly in fhe confusion. Sfaff members, clofhes in wild disarray, were seen running fhrough fhe halls, af deadline fime no one walkedll in search of someone, anyone, who could idenfi y a sophomore in fhe back row of a group picfure. Sfaff members were heard yelling laf deadline fime no one falked quieflyll for a picfure fhaf fhe poor phofo- grapher claimed he hadn'+ even faken. Sweaf began fo pour, fingernails were biffen, and hair was pulled, somefimes righf oufl Then, suddenly, fhe sform was over, and an unnafural calm prevailed: fhe Shield was puf fo bed. Yes, fhe Shield was puf fo bed, and our jobs were over, buf fhe joy, fhe everlasf- ing pleasure and safisfacfion in ifs producfion are ours forever, nof fo be forgoffen. Our greafesf hope is fhaf you will confinue fo be edified, enferfained, and carried back fo fhe happy days which we have laboriously recorded for you in Our Shield. Signed. Fran Faulkner !
