Christmas is a key that opens the closed hands 'and thrills the busy, sometimes sorrowful-sometimes joyful- hearts of millions. It is. a season of kindness and joy. Christmas is the celebration of the coming of Christ into the world. l This makes us realize the fact that there hasn't always been a Christmas and should help us to love the more this festival in honor of the Prince of Peace. It is of course the day of days, the greatest of all holi- days. It is a time of prayer and a time of praise-a time when each one can bring joy into the home, not necessar- ily home alone, but also into the hearts and homes of oth- ers. Christmas giving is not measured by its monetary worth, but rather by the love and friendship expressed by the remembrance. Give gifts within your means. Forget not the needy for this is a time for words of love and deeds of charity. MOM ANOTHER EAGLE SCOUT. Oliver Buchanan, a junior, was awarded the Eagle Scout badge by Secretary Hyde at the American Royal, Thurs- day night, November 17. Eagle Scout standards are very hard to meet and the Scout must first earn twen- ty-one merit badges, twelve of which are required. .Forty-nine other Scouts be- sides Oliver received Eagle Scout badges. Gerald Lillard and Oliver are the only ones in the Richmond troop. SPARTAN CHAMPIONS ' AGAIN. On a slick and water-soak- ed field, the Spartans won the championship of the Big Four by defeating the Excelsior Springs Tigers by a score of 19 to 0. The game started and at the same time a fine mist be- gan to settle over the field. B-ecause of a heavy field, little progress could be made by either team at first. The first quarter ended with no scores having been made. However, the Spartans were running splitting line plays and mak- ing surprisingly long gains around the ends. The second quarter started with a mad rush by the Spar- tans which resulted 1 in the first touchdown of the game on a plunge by Moore over the Tiger line. All the time, how- ever, Richmond's line was holding in the traditional Spartan manner. The half ended with most of Rich- mond's second team men in the game carrying on the bat- tle with great spirit. In the third quarter the second touchdown was added after a long end run by Moore and a line plunge by Brown which brought the ball to the thr-ee yard line where it was lunged over bv Moore on the first down. The ball was car- ried over for the extra point but a man was offside and it didnit count. The Richmond boys had a harder time keep- ing their feet than the Tigers because the 'Excelsiorites were equipped with mud cleats. At the end of the third quarter the Tigers began using a ,feeble pass attack which was unsuccessful. During the fourth quarter the game became heated as the visitors used all of their tricks in trying to make up for lost time but they were stopped by hard hitting Spar- tans. In the last few min- utes of play the ball was car- ried up the field to the four- yard line by powerful line plunges and off tackle plays. There it was put over by Brown on the second play. The extra point was made on a line plunge. After this touchdown the second team Spartans were put in and al- though th-e Tigers in one last effort tried to march down the field, they were checked near midfield. M PRESENTS ' TROPHY. Mr. Roseman, principal of Excelsior Springs High school, and secretary of the Big Five Conference, presented the trophy cup to Captain Paul Williams of the championship Spartan football team of 1932 in assembly, Wednesday. - JUNIOR CIRCUS FRIDAY. Halls will be filled with en- thusiastic R. H. S. students who anxiously await the op- ening of the annual Junior Circus. Each year it seems that. the circus is the best ev- er given but strangely enough the next year's even sur- passes the preceding one. The juniors of this year have the hardest job of any junior class so far-to surpass last year's circus. It can be done, how-ever, since it has been before, and if any juniors have ever been able to do it, it is these juniors of 1931-32. Und-er the leadership of their capable sponsors and officers, they have been working for the past three weeks on their minstrel, and musical revue, Jerry Joins the Juniors? At the Stroke of Twelve , a one- act play under the direction of Mrs. Fink will also be giv- en with a cast selected from the junior class. Eighty-four i ?
