Although the vocational branch of the varied curriculum at R.H.S. has been reduced by the construction of the new addition, some classes, such as mechanical drawing were offered. This study of courses prepares the student for actual work immediately after high school, rather than preparing him for college, as academic courses do. With the completion of the new addition, this department has a spacious, well-equipped section to instruct future adults in their future occupations. SHOP AND ARTWORK, TO PROVIDE AN EXCEPTIONAL SCHOOL FOR THE STUDY The Art Program of R. H.S, is to provide students with a basic understanding of art in this modern life and to cultivate individual understanding and expression in all media by carrying out a wide variety of activities. Under the guidance of Mrs. Lehr, the students of R.H.S. are learning new and different techniques in art. The making of mosaic table tops is a very popular craft this year, a-long with jewelry making, oil paintings, carvings, and many more crafts. Students are usually limited to one period of art a day. 10

A department corresponding with mathematics is science. This is one of the most complicated and interest-arousing series of courses offered at Richmond High. The basic curriculum consists of a year each of biology, chemistry, and physics, but a semester of psychology is also available. During the year of biology, students learn about structures of plants and animals. Chemistry teaches the basic behavior of matter. Physics concerns the laws of matter. Psychology serves as a foundation for college psychology, a study of the problems of the mind. A new one-year course that was started last fall is Earth Science. This deals with the study of the physical features of the earth. These science studies are taken by most college-bound students. New science rooms and laboratories will be provided in our new building. Biology proves to be an interesting course. Students in biology 1 explore the world of microbes. Our Language Department strives to a-chieve the impossible: teach characteristics and traditions which took thousands of years to develop in the short interval of one or more semesters of study. English is the required language at R.H.S. Six semesters are offered in both academic and general courses. English deals with compositions, advanced skills in grammar, speech, American literature, essays and term paper writings, and English literature. Six semesters of Latin, Spanish and French are the foreign languages offered at R.H.S. Movies are often used in all of these languages. Costumes are sometimes used in Spanish. Records are commonly used in French. Many R.H.S. students enjoy speaking the languages. English 3, is o study of grommer and of speech-making. A pupil in Mr. Johnson's class makes a demonstration speech. OF AN EXTENDED RANGE OF LANGUAGES. This class of French students find work ot the board helpful in leorning their vocabulary. Mr. Paul Honna does a splendid job of teaching ancient latin to modern-day students. Spanish is one of our most populor languages. The class of Miss Clark uses varied teaching aids. 11
