RICHMOND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL RICHMOND, INDIANA AMID THE H 6 H StHO i. AO 9lTI J MtCOKATe SEALE ' y - 'D 1 i.ÂŁX OON3 TRi 4-T o j Teacher and Counselor, Retired Richmond Senior High School IN APPRECIATION . for her fine service to the students and faculty of Richmond Senior High School, the 1962 Pierian is dedicated. Miss Mildred Crabb, who retired in June of 1961, was a fine asset to the teaching staff of R.H.S. Maay of the seniors of 1962 remember Miss Crabb as a teacher in the social studies department; however, her talents far exceed the mere teaching of social studies. Miss Crabb began her teaching career in Richmond at Dennis Junior High School, one of the first junior high schools in the country. Prior to her teaching assignment. Miss Crabb graduated from Columbia Teacher's College in New York with a Masters degree in vocational counseling. Miss Crabb became the first student counselor at R.H.S., initiating a completely new idea for the students of Richmond high. The students and faculty are proud to dedicate this Pierian to Miss Crabb. BUT THE STUDENTS CONTINUED WORKING 4 The growl of bulldozers, the chatter of hammers, the smell of roofing pitch, and the odor of wet paint have been just as much a part of life at high school this year as classes, dances, and sports events. Sounds of the new construction have echoed throughout the halls, foreshadowing exciting things to come. In the original building of sixty classrooms, R.H.S. students have found things quite crowded. The addition will make the twenty-five year-old building more functional and spacious. There will be no more classes in the basement of Joseph Moore and also no more home rooms in the cafeteria. Already finished is the new cafeteria with a seating capacity for seven hundred. A new shop area, new science and language laboratories, and a driver training room are highlights of the new structure. Our new addition, the future swimming pool, and the new girls' gymnasium will make Richmond Senior High School not only the pride of the students, but the pride of the community as well. mi From Model T's to 19-62's, oil of our models stond side by side in the porking lot. A student needs a basic knowledge of this science for almost any occupation. We at Richmond High are proud of our fine mathematics department. Recently an advanced range of classes has been added. It consists of advanced forms of qeometry and algebra A major in math consists of a year each of geometry and algebra, and a semester each of trigonometry and analysis. The mathematics department is one of the largest at R.H.S., employing one-sixth of our teaching staff. In the minds of college-bound students, it is one of the most important series of subjects available to them at Richmond Senior High School. Even if a student may not be planning to attend a college, he should investigate the fine courses in mathematics available at R.H.S. Pupils of the advanced geometry class of Mr. Wallace Brenneman discuss a difficult proof. THE BUILDING CONTINUED THROUGH THE Boardwork ploys an important port' in the trigonometry class of Mr. Dole Seider. 3 A department corresponding with mathematics is science. This is one of the most complicated and interest-arousing series of courses offered at Richmond High. The basic curriculum consists of a year each of biology, chemistry, and physics, but a semester of psychology is also available. During the year of biology, students learn about structures of plants and animals. Chemistry teaches the basic behavior of matter. Physics concerns the laws of matter. Psychology serves as a foundation for college psychology, a study of the problems of the mind. A new one-year course that was started last fall is Earth Science. This deals with the study of the physical features of the earth. These science studies are taken by most college-bound students. New science rooms and laboratories will be provided in our new building. Biology proves to be an interesting course. Students in biology 1 explore the world of microbes. CLASSES OF MATH AND THE SCIENCES, 9 Although the vocational branch of the varied curriculum at R.H.S. has been reduced by the construction of the new addition, some classes, such as mechanical drawing were offered. This study of courses prepares the student for actual work immediately after high school, rather than preparing him for college, as academic courses do. With the completion of the new addition, this department has a spacious, well-equipped section to instruct future adults in their future occupations. SHOP AND ARTWORK, TO PROVIDE AN EXCEPTIONAL SCHOOL FOR THE STUDY The Art Program of R. H.S, is to provide students with a basic understanding of art in this modern life and to cultivate individual understanding and expression in all media by carrying out a wide variety of activities. Under the guidance of Mrs. Lehr, the students of R.H.S. are learning new and different techniques in art. The making of mosaic table tops is a very popular craft this year, a-long with jewelry making, oil paintings, carvings, and many more crafts. Students are usually limited to one period of art a day. 10 Our Language Department strives to a-chieve the impossible: teach characteristics and traditions which took thousands of years to develop in the short interval of one or more semesters of study. English is the required language at R.H.S. Six semesters are offered in both academic and general courses. English deals with compositions, advanced skills in grammar, speech, American literature, essays and term paper writings, and English literature. Six semesters of Latin, Spanish and French are the foreign languages offered at R.H.S. Movies are often used in all of these languages. Costumes are sometimes used in Spanish. Records are commonly used in French. Many R.H.S. students enjoy speaking the languages. English 3, is o study of grommer and of speech-making. A pupil in Mr. Johnson's class makes a demonstration speech. OF AN EXTENDED RANGE OF LANGUAGES. This class of French students find work ot the board helpful in leorning their vocabulary. Mr. Paul Honna does a splendid job of teaching ancient latin to modern-day students. Spanish is one of our most populor languages. The class of Miss Clark uses varied teaching aids. 11 Physical education is one of the bosic required courses here -at R.H.S. One full year is required, consisting of track, baseball, and calisthenics in the spring, and football, soccer, and wrestling in the fall. Our experienced staff of physical education instructors make this course a rigorous one to strengthen the bodies of the teenagers of today, the adults of tomorrow. Most boys take their physical education in their freshman year at Richmond Senior High School. A RIGOROUS COURSE OF PHYSICAL All girls are required to take two semesters of physical education at Richmond Senior High. The first semester includes marching, soccer, badminton and various skills using balance beams and ropes. In the second semester girls play basketball and volleyball while the weather is cold, and move outside in the spring for golf and baseball. Miss Jan Stocker and Miss Edna Roe are the two teachers presently teaching girls' physical education. This class is a big help to new students in getting acquainted at R.H.S. Physical Education counts half credit towards graduation. 12 Pupils of the heolth closs of Mr. Peters demonstrate a reaction apporotus. While these cars aren't driven in drivers' ed., they represent the extremes of our rods. EDUCATION AND RELATED SUBJECTS, A course in health is one of the required subjects for graduation from Richmond Senior High School. Included in the semester course are a general health study, a First Aid course, and a study of driving regulations. It is in health that tobacco, drugs, and narcotics are studied in conformance with state law. Civil Defense is included with the First Aid unit. Health can be taken at any time, but is usually taken during the sophomore year. Driver training is an elective and has no credit offering. It is open to any pupil more than fifteen and a half years old. The class is a behind the wheel course, and pupils get about six hours of instruction. The book work in Driver Training is given as a unit of the health class. Fundamentals of parking, driving in traffic, and all phases of motor car operation are included, all of which training should enable a student to obtain an operator's license. Completion of this course reduces insurance rates for boys. 13 Every student hos some contact with Social Studies during his three years at Richmond High. U.S. History, U.S. Government, and American Problems or Pocific Relations are required courses. For a major there are many other interesting courses, such os Americon Neighbors, Economics, Geography, Modern History, Personal Problems, Psychology, World History and Codet Teaching. A knowledge of history is important in all of your studies. A VARIETY OF SOCIAL STUDIES CLASSES, 14 f The choirs ore divided into three sections. The beginning choir is cadet choir, of which there ore three classes. The next choir is girls' choir. The top choir is concert choir. All choirs ore under the direction of Mr. Dovid Davenport. The home economics ot R.H.S. consists of the basic study of cooking and sewing. Cooking class is also available for interested boys. Home economics is important for all students regardless of what their future may be. CHOIR, AND HOME EC. COURSES, 15 : BUSINESS CURRICUL The business department of R.H.S. is divided into three curriculums. The bookkeeping curriculum offers four semesters of bookkeeping. The stenographic curriculum offers four semesters of typing and three semesters of shorthand. The general business curriculum offers the basic business classes needed when entering the business field. Various business courses are given with these three curriculums. Distributive education is a newly formed class which offers an opportunity to put training into practice by working in a business firm. 16 THAT SCHOOL IS RICHMOND SENIOR HIGH. 17 BUILDERSâ HAMMERINGS AMID THE THEY RUN THE SHOW Our four fine 'school officials who grace this poge are tops in their field. Mr. John O. Reed has served R H.S. os Principal for the past three years. His schooling consists of work at Ohio Northern, and Ball State. Mr. Chas. McConnell, Vice-principal of R.H.S., has long been a servant of the student. It is he who schedules all of our athletic events. Mr. Richard Coons, vice-principal and Dean of Boys, has long been a familiar and friendly face at R.H.S. Mrs. Gladys Friberg, Dean of Girls, also heads counseling services for college-bound seniors. Reed Principal Richmond Senior High Below: Mr. Richard Coons Vice-Principol Deon of Boys Richmond Senior High Left: Mr. Chorles McConnell Vice-Principol Athletic Co-ordinotor Richmond Senior High Mrs. Glodys Friberg Deon of Girls Scholarship Director Richmond Senior High 20 The most important figure in the School City of Richmond is the Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Paul C. Garrison. It is his duty to supervise the school board, and see that the plans of the board are realized. Mr. Garrison completed work at Indiana University for a B.S. degree. He has hod further education at I.U., Columbia, Colorado State, California State, and Purdue University. The School Board works closely with Mr. Garrison on all motters concerning the education which Richmond students receive. Mr. Paul C. Gorrison, Superintendent of Schools. LEADERS OF OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY One of the most familiar men at R.H.S. is Mr. Glenn Holder, Director of Secondary Education of Richmond city schools. In this office, Mr. Holder heads the supervision of curricula in Richmond's secondary schools. Mr. Glenn Holder possesses on A.B. degree from DePauw and an A M. degree from I.U. Mr. Holder received his secondary education in Richmond schools, and served on the staffs of both the school newspoper and the Pierian. It is the duty of this board to plan activities and functions of the school city os well as to carry them out. Operating from offices on tenth street, the executive board of our school city is directly responsible for the education received by the students in Richmond. The Board of Directors functions with Mr. Glenn Holder, Director of Secondary Education, to see that curricula are of the highest standard. Each member of this board is responsible for a segment of the entire network of instruction which a student receives from the ninth to the twelfth grades in Richmond city schools. 22 BEHIND THE SCENES AT R.H.S Top Right: Mrs. Mortho Oler, Rentol Librarian. Back Row: Agnes Breithaupt, Frances Mertz, Mary Stemple, Inez Scarce, Mrs. Fryman, Helen Sheffer, Tina Strahan, Hazel Carrico. There are a lot of people behind the scenes at R.H.S. For instance, who sees to it that the text books are in good repair? Who is responsible for having Civic Hall ready for sports events and dances? Who keeps the school clean for the students? Who is in charge of McGuire Hall? Who prepares the meals for 1,000 students daily in the cafeteria? The answers to these questions are to be found on this page. Mr. Wynn takes care of Civic Hall; Mr. Michael takes care of McGuire; and Mr. Purvis is in charge of the main building. 23 FAMILIAR FACES AT RICHMOND HIGH THE OFFICE STAFF MRS. CATHERINE VIONI Secretary to the deans and athletic director. MRS. HELEN DAVENPORT Registrar MRS. RUBY DENNING Secretary to the Principal When anyone enters the office at Richmond Senior High, he is usually not greeted by Mr. Reed, Mr. McConnell, or Mr. Coons, but rather by one of the office staff. These faces are familiar ones at R.H.S. If there is a conflict in the schedule of a student, if someone needs some thumb tacks or scotch tape, or if information is needed, one of these well-known women will help. In spite of their busy schedules, our office staff always finds time to help the troubled student. The faces of these office members, our Principal, vice-principal, and deans, lend not an uneasy air to the office as many may feel, but rather an atmosphere of aid and assistance in time of need. 24 VON ALEXANDER Earlham, A.B. During the half time of the football game, Friday, Oct. 20, Anne Walker was crowned the 1961 Homecoming Queen. Carol Klein-knecht and Sue Harper reigned in her court. The annual Homecoming Dance was held in Civic Hall after the football game until midnight Miss Walker and her court reigned over the dance. The R.H.S. dance band provided the music for the Annual Homecoming Dance. The 1961 Homecoming proved to be very successful to all who attended any part or all of the activities held. One of the more gaily decorated cars in our annual Homecoming parade. Miss Anne Walker is crowned Homecoming Queen, 1961 by Don Wright. A kiss for the queen by her escort to the dance, Bob Hampton. With music by the R.H.S. Dance Band, the Homecoming dance was enjoyed by all. 1961 HOMECOMING IS FINEST YET 35 A cold drizzling roin failed to dampen the spirits of the many students who attended the Hi-Y Snowball. Girls in lovely new formats puddle-jumped to the door of Civic Hall under umbrellas held by their gallant dates. Decorations were done in blue and white with a tall white snow castle as the centerpiece. A beautiful low false ceiling and stenciled snowflakes along the sides of the gym, completed the winter wonderland. The enchanted couples danced 'til midnight to the music of the Jimmy Stier's band. Excitement reached a peak upon the announcement of the Snowball Queen, Miss Cheryl Kitchel. After the coronation, the crowd began to thin as couples hurried to restaurants and parties to end a wonderful evening. Carrying the theme of Around the World, the Mardi Gras consisted of many and varied booths depicting various activities of many of the countries of the world. The colorful booths are manned each year by members of every Y-Teen group and various other clubs. Between seven and ten-thirty P.M., thousands of students and adults alike crowded into Civic Hall to see the spectacle of the year. Before the actual opening of the doors, however, many hours of patient toil went into each booth. The cutting of crepe paper, the stuffing of chicken wire, and the sawing of wood echoed through Civic Hall for hours before the opening of the Mardi Gras. Afterwards, a gigantic clean-up was in order, for all the booth decorations had to be removed, the trash swept up, and the floor polished. During the evening, many prizes and a-wards were awarded. Duane Hodgin and Mary Astesano were crowned Robin Hood and Maid Marian respectively. Prize for the best decorated booth went to Ann Walker's group. Prize for most original was awarded to Carolyn Cook's group. The best Mardi Gras booth designation went to Toni Wogoman for her China Doll booth. The 1961 Mardi Gras was the most successful ever to be staged in Civic Hall. The crowds were huge, the profits for each club great, and the fun for all priceless. This unique of all activities, the carnival of the year, is Mardi Gras, 1961. 39 BRAND NEW FOOTLIGHTS SCORES HUGE Above: Modified Footlights Chorus Line. PROM The juniors of 1962 bid the graduating seniors farewell with Sayonara, the Junior-Senior Prom of 1962. Held from 9 to 12 P.M. on Friday, April 27, Sayonara proved to be an exceptional Prom. Enchanted couples danced to the tones of the Les Shepard Band, amid decorations set with a Japanese air. Civic Hall was decorated with Japanese lanterns, vines, and flowers, bridges and cherry trees, and topped with a pagoda in the middle of the dance floor. Our five beautiful candidates for queen of Sayonara were Nancy Ahaus, Ann Hamilton, Jackie Lindley, Billie Lu Rich, and Sandra Weisbrod. The queen was crowned beneath the elaborate pagoda at the center of the dance floor as couples watched from their tables on the stage. As the clock struck midnight, the enchantment melted as couples drifted from the Prom to restaurants and parties. Seniors of 1962 will long remember Sayonara, the Junior-Senior Prom of 1962. Members of John's court were Bob Hampton, Mike Cheno-weth, Max Close, and Gory Conyers. Decorations carried the theme of Friday the Thirteenth. Cupid's Carnival, Y-Teen girl-invite dance, was held February 17 at the Magow Room in the Y.W.C.A. Music was by the Harvey Reed Quartet. Mark Alexander was crowned King by a Y-Teen president, Sue Horper. The court consisted of Steve Haas, Jack Turnbaugh, Bill Thatcher, and Jerry Blossom. The huge crowd in attendance termed this dance wonderful. Where con you go to: meet your friends, dance, take your date, watch T.V., eat, play ping-pong, play checkers, sit and watch, talk, ploy chess, drink cokes, or just loaf? The TAC Club, of course; everyone goes! TAC CLUB IS POPULAR SPOT 45 If one organization could be rated the most beneficial to teenagers, it would be the TAC Council. Organized and directed by Captain Walter Stout, Richmond Police Dept., the TAC Council has provided a place for teens to meet, and has worked out many general problems for us also. The members of the TAC Council work regular shifts at the TAC Club, seeing that all runs smoothly. Walt Stout is usually there too. As a matter of fact, nearly everyone is at the Tac Room when it is open! The TAC Council deserves a word of thanks for its work. Through your representative, you have a voice in the manner of operation of your school. Conditions in or near school are constantly being made better by the actions of the Student Council. The student parking lot has been paved, a student directory is made available annually, and conditions in the hall being improved are all examples of successful efforts made by the Student Council of Richmond Senior High. The Quill club gives students a chance to express themselves in the media of poetry or short stories. Thus, students may find a lasting interest in literary work, teaching, or journalism. T o Mr. Joseph Kaiser, whose unswerving loyalty has helped make the Pierian and the Register successful, this page is dedicated. Serving on a school newspaper is no easy task. Each member of the staff must complete his work on time, or the paper doesn't go out on time. So very many students at R.H.S. merely pick up the Register, glance through it, ond throw it away. They fail to realize that the small four page paper represents weeks of work. Copy must be written and fitted, pictures must be taken, layouts need to be pasted up, and proofs must be corrected. The next time you pick up a Register, at least read it, for there are many items of great importance to you, the student. Each day, the Register staff meets during fifth hour to plan future editions. The actual printing is done in the R.H.S. printing shop. The experience gained by working on a high school paper is never lost; it may be used in college publications or actual journalism vocations. A new swimming pool is planned for part of the new addition to R.H.S. Mixed bowling is the one coed sport at R.H.S. After the boys' and girls' bowling leagues are ended, mixed bowling begins, and this spells fun for everyone! Coed teams bowl for top honors in this spring sport. Mr. Bill Wallace, official 1962 Pierian photographer, deserves a word of special thanks for his superior work over and above the requirements of the Pierian. Working- hand in hand with members of the staff, Mr. Wallace has certainly been unselfish with his time and talents, catering to the every need of the yearbook. Thanks go to the other photographers in Richmond for their contributions to the Pierian as well. Mr. Ralph Pyle is represented in this year's Pierian with the brilliant cover liners, and exclusive coverage of the Snowball dance. Mr. Larry Porter aided the staff greatly with the senior pictures, as well as providing the queen and court picture of Homecoming. Mr. Lynxwiler is represented in the Pierian with photographs of the Jr.-Sr. Prom. The Richmond Palladium-Item provided the necessary advertising and promotion of the 1962 Pierian, and provided various action shots throughout our yearbook. To Mr. W. F. Butherus, Inter-collegiate Press representative to the Pierian, Mr. Jerry Harrell, Pierian sponsor, and all others connected with the formation and production of the 1962 Pierian goes on emphatic THANKS from the editor and staff of the 1962 Pierian, your yearbook. Every eye is held by the shooting of on important foul shot at a Red Devil basketball game. Richmond students think alike, cheer alike. Don Dening, 1962 Pierian Editor-in-Chief Judy Fienning, Business Manager; Linda Person, Copy writer. Vineta Essmaker, Underclass Editor; Rena VandeVord, Senior Editor; Toni Wogoman, Layout Editor. Goil Rathbun, Clubs Editor; Amie Maiden, Copy Editor; Joan Dailey, Art; Ron Henley, Sports Editor. Left to Right: John Hodowal, Asst. Sports Ed., Billie Lu Rich, Activities Ed., Don Dening, Editor, Mr. Jerry Harrell, Sponsor, Jennie Van Skoik, Asst. Clubs, Ed., Jo Ellen Petry, Copywriter. Well, it's finished, a brand-new Pierian. We hope you like the changes we have made this year, since each change has been designed to make the Pierian better. We've worked; we've panicked, but it's finally done: your 1962 Pierian, Sleepless nights, broken pencils, lost pictures, forgotten names, and missed deadlines have all taken their tolls on the 1962 staff. But no matter how much work was involved, none of us would ever pass up the chance to work on the Pierian staff again â it's just one of those great things one never forgets . . .
