The Leaders Say: Drum major and majorettes Shirley Lloyd, June Clarkson, Gretchen Graham, Bob Ware, and Pat Peyton. The R.H.S. Red Devil Marching Band pro- duced half-time shows at all home football games as they strutted down the field in their white spats and gloves. Under the leadership of our new di- rector, Robert T. Carr, the band played for pa- rades and traveled to Purdue Band Day. There they participated with 7000 other high school bandsmen in the half-time spectacular. As the marching season ended, the band concentrated on preparing for their Winter Concert. They sold candy along with the rest of the music depart- ment. The Concert Band played for various as- semblies at R.H.S., Earlham, and the junior high schools. Home basketball games were the scene of many fine band shows as Civic Hall vibrated to the steady beat of marches and spirited numbers. Band officers are Captain, Bob Ware; First Sergeant, John Backmeyer; Secretary, Joyce Zim- mer; Treasurer, Alice Plummer; Student Director, Jerry Schuerman. The Spring Concert ended a busy season for our R.H.S. Band. Our Director Mr. Robert T. Carr Officers Backmeyer, Plummer, Zimmer, and Ware. 31

Heard Today-Remembered Tomorrow Mr. Ralph Burkhardt Orchestra B.M.E. Jordan College of Music M.M.E. Indiana University Since its organization, our orchestra has been perform- ing each year in the winter and spring concerts with the choirs and concert band. These concerts require hours of practice which the orchestra has daily, during fourth hour. In these regular fifty minute periods, the students are given an opportunity not only to practice, but to conduct and ar- range lnusic. In addition to the bi-annual performances, the orchestra has played tor assemblies, junior high schools, and Earlham College. The orchestra does not have quantity, for it is the small- est music organization in school, being composed of only twenty-nine pieces. This does not seem to matter, for they put forth quality instead. This fact has been proven many times by their fine performances. 32
