JOHNSTON Richmond Art Movement Ella Bond Johnston β the director and spirit of the Richmond Art Movement in Richmond for the past 43 years. Through her tireless efforts and outstanding ability, Richmond High School is the only school in the country, so far as is known, with such a magnificent art gallery as the one in McGuire hall, a living monument to a great leader. Mrs. Johnston has compiled an invaluable permanent collection in- cluding 95 paintings, five pieces of sculpture, sixty bronze medals, groups of pottery, graphics, textiles, and hundreds of color reproductions of famous paintings. ART CLUB Hanging in the Richmond gallery is the fine portrait of Ella Bond Johnston by Louis Betts, who presented it to the Richmond Art Associa- tion. Believing that the appreciation of art is one of the greater assets of a high school education, Mrs. Johnston has arranged exhibits and lectures for the benefit of the students, who will reciprocate by developing a reverence for the true beauty of art. The 1945 Pierian The publication of ihe 1945 Pierian is now a record of history ... of history en- acted in Richmond High School ... of history fashioned through hours of amusement and drudgery, bliss and sadness, toiling and resting ... of history effected not by a handful of individuals, but rather, by many unassuming people, all indispensable in the expedient task of publishing the 45 annual. We are extremely grateful to Richard Meek for his superb photography and un- limited service; to Charles Hall for his splendid work in photography; to Ezra A. Miller for his extraordinary skill coupled with his invaluable assistance in moments of exigency; and to the several other photographers who so amiably assisted. To Mr. F. N. Ropkey and the Indianapolis Engraving Co. for their foresight in planning, their capable use of art and science, and their helpful suggestions, may we express our thanks. The most intricate and perplexing job of printing the book was handled, as usual, in a competent, understanding, and tireless manner by Mr. Harry Tubesing and the Nicholson Printing Company. To these people, fr om whose press has come a splendid job of printing, go our commendations and gratitude. The high quality of the cover of this book, which speaks for itself, is the work of the S. K. Smith Co. of Chicago. The administration and faculty, of course, deserve a large share of the credit, for it was they, uncomplainingly, who sacrificed time and planning to make possible the use of their proteges. Of Mr. Glenn Holder not enough can be said in commendation. His was the task of advising and, inevitably, prodding. The staff itself, along with many others overlooked, has devoted much time and effort to this book. We trust that the result of their attempt has been a Pierian which has successfully recorded within its covers a thousand reminders of real friendships, happy days, thrills, fun and pictures of everybody . . . classmates, faculty, the big games, the stars, the scrubs, and the spirit that is the motivating force behind Richmond High School. The Editor. We ' re loyal to you, Richmond High. We ' re Red and we ' re White, Richmond High. We ' ll back you to stand Against the best in the land.
