EDITOR Wm. E. Stevenson BUSINESS MANAGER James Jay NICHOLSON PRINTING COMPANY RICHMOND. INDIANA THE PIERIAN 1933 Published by THE SENIOR CLASS of MORTON HIGH SCHOOL RICHMOND, INDIANA Foreword TT is the wish of the editor of the 1933 Pierian, that this review of our undergraduate days will find a place in the hearts of those whose faces it mirrors. With that thought in mind, our high school days will always be happy clays to which we can look back with pleasure. William Stevenson, Editor. Dedication WE DEDICATE THIS BOOR TO THE MEMORY OF MISS INEZ TRUEBLOOD GONE February i, 1933 When last we saw her, She had a smile Upon her lips; But even then her heart Was straining to feed I Icr much used body— And death was calling her— And life was fast being drained away. She was very tired And weakened after Carrying so well her heavy burden Of life for so long. If there is such a heaven, As so often spoken of, There must be another present there Today, well worthy of such a place. Her spirit will not die so soon; For she imbedded in our hearts Her soul, where it will stay Until we too must go— John E. Penery, '33. +•—•- [THE 1933 PIERIAN ] Our Ship of State Has Many Pilots Six Seniors [THE 1933 PIERIAN ] +•— IT is your unusual privilege to be facing what must, by the very nature of the past few years, be a much different but highly interesting era. The nature of the opportunities offered to you, and the problems confronting you, will be largely determined by what is taking place simultaneously with your graduation. Changes of all kinds are being made throughout the world with confusing swiftness—history is being made daily. Despite our adverse experiences resulting from the present economic adjustment, we are human enough to expect a better fortune. One of the favorable outcomes that will likely accrue to your generation is a finer sense of values, which will in turn, generate an esteem tor many things heretofore little appreciated. I trust that you may catch something of the spirit of this unfolding age, and that you may have a real appreciation of the heritage that is yours. D. Seider. ON an advertising page of a popular magazine, recently I read the following: “A few minutes’ reading of this amazing book changed the entire course of John Harkness’ career. It showed him how a simple and easy method in twenty minutes a day would train him to dominate one man or thousands, convince one man or many . . . .” In few words, this advertisement, and scores of others like it, would have you believe that there are short and easy roads to amazing successes. Easy roads to music and art, easy and short cuts to law and ministry, etc. Think of the time, money, and effort which might be saved by taking the short cut, and to be rewarded in the end by marvelous success! Dearly beloved, be not deceived. There are no short and easy roads to any amazing success of enduring worth in any field of worthy endeavor. “Not a truth has to art or to science been given, But brows have ached for it and souls toiled and striven.” The above advertisement may remind you of the old law of the lever which you studied in physics. In brief it is this: “The heavier the load, the longer the lever: or the lighter the load, the shorter the lever. But the use of the longer lever takes more time, so we may say that the longer the time, the greater the power; and the shorter the time, the less the power. You will remember this law is inherent in matter; it has always existed there, and will always exist as long as there is matter. It cannot be modified or repealed. It was not made; it was discovered. It is not only a law in matter, but one of the laws of life. Experience has taught that a certain amount of time is necessary in preparation for the goals we are seeking. If you are aiming at the ministry, the experience of those who have succeeded should tell you how much time you must spend in preparation; and so, for any goal at which you may be aiming. Do not imagine you may become a Henry Ward Beecher, a Francis Willard, or a Wendell Phillips in four weeks, by reading some amazing books twenty minutes a day. Such a procedure is not only absurd, but is against all laws of matter and mind. It just can’t be done. “The man who seeks one thing in life and but one. May hope to achieve it before life be done.” John F. Thompson. Eight ----[THE 1933 PIERIAN ]------—------+ Robert Allen Academic We hate to lose you; we are so used to you now. Mach. Earl Sticleman, General 1933 Class History THE fall of 1950 has proved to be of as great consequence in the annals of Morton as was the fall of Constantinople in the history of the world. At that time our class made its debut into Morton. We were so busy orienting ourselves that we neglected to organize until the spring of 1931 when Joe Polver was given the office of president; Kicth I.oop, vice-president; Lucretia Long, secretary; Mr. Dale Seider and Mr. John F. Thompson, sponsors. Continuing and increasing our achievements, we started our Junior year at this institute of secondary learning. We reorganized immediately with Jim Jay as president; Dot Dallas, vice-president; and Hetty Gilcrest, secretary. In this, the third year of our high school experience, we have reached the pinnacle of our career. The class was piloted by Robert Loehr, and was assisted by Lucretia Long and Rosella Cooney. Mortonite, the annual school theatrical production, was again sponsored by the graduating class, the proceeds going toward the support of the Pierian. The senior play, “The Patsy,” was one of the outstanding events of the season. The class of ’33 pioneered the way for all following classes by initiating the Junior-Senior prom. It is our sincere hope that future classes will not abuse the privilege that we have gained. Now the time has come when we are both glad and sorry, for we must say goodbye to Morton, the scene of many of our happy and well-spent hours. We arc depending upon following classes to uphold the traditions of our school as we have faithfully tried to do. Richard Bennett Academic “Hick thinks that school would be ().
