◄ THE TRIDENT 1930 ► an ntiurs nf 1U31I THREE years have passed since you entered Morton from the junior schools and elsewhere. You brought with you certain mental equipments, not from your former schools or your former teachers; these you have inherited from a long iine of worthy ancestors. We did not, and could not, add to or take from these native equipments, which are ycur priceless inheritance, your most precious possession. If we have done anything, we have helped you to make the most of them. You came with ability to learn. We did not and could not add to that ability; we could only direct you how to use that ability. You came with ability to think and reason. We did not and could not add to these; we could only direct you how to think and reason more economically. In other words, we have tried to help you make the most of what you already have. You have been taught that an ability used becomes stronger, and when not used it becomes weaker and is sometimes lost. If you have ability in art, use it or you may lose it; in music, use it or you may lose it; in science, use it or you may lose it. If you have talent in any field of endeavor whatsoever, use it or you may lose it; lor “Unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance; but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.” Therefore, we wish you abundant success in fields of worthy activity. J. F. Thompson, Sponsor. An Apprrriatimt THE members of this class of 1930 who have worked on the book now before us have overcome no inconsiderable difficulties in making any book possible. Faced with the obstacle of a depleted school treasury, they have so simplified the book and so managed the business end of it as to be independent of the usual appropriation. The opposition of those upon whom they were counting for help and advice, especially that of their own sponsors, had also to be met. They have in part overcome this opposition, in my own case turned it into whole-hearted support, by their determination, persistence, good humor, and practical plans. Some members of the Class long refused to lace the situation and to be satisfied with what is possible, but they, too, are now supporting the work of the Staff. The Class is to be congratulated upon having found people who would give willing and capable service in carrying out what all wanted done. The Staff is to be congratulated still more upon having proved their ability to rise above obstacles, not fall before them. The strength gained through the carrying through a project in this conquering spirit will surely help them to meet and overcome others of life's difficulties. Anna Bradbury, Sponsor. Page eight
