S. as frightened as little chil- dren on Halloween Night. For about a week you wouldn't have known that there was a freshman around, but when we got under way there was no stopping us! Four weeks went by, and then came our initiation. Girls in their fantastic costumes fell down the stairs, while the boys just stood and laughed, We held one record hop during the year, which was in the third quarter, We conducted a class meeting on the average of one every twt months. On September 7, 1953 we came back to R. H. S. as sophomores. This was the year we were to have all the fun-it was our turn to initiate the freshmen. Our sophomore year was a successful one, our greatest thrill being when we received our class rings. On September 6, 1954 we returned once more, refreshed and happy, ready to make the most of our junior year. Our class was so large that we had to remain in the room we occupied last year. We have held several sock dances this year. S ,dame Qfwtofzq We entered Richmond High School September 5, 1953 with 47 of the most intelli- gent freshmen that ever have, or ever will, enter. During the school year we dwindled down to 42. On September 25, we were initiated. We will have to admit that the sophomores did a very good job of welcoming the freshmen to R. H. S. We had several socials during the year, all of which were successful. We were now well into our sophomore year. We have 32 students, and are well represented in various school activities. They were a bit undecided at first as to just exactly what they should do and how they should do it, but soon got over this feeling. The Sophomores made them feel at home by giving them a welcoming reception they will never forget. This was held in the high school gym on October '7, 1954. A dance followed stunts. Music was supplied by Ronald Cloutier and his orchestra. The Freshmen are well represented in all sports with four girls playing basketball, five boys playing basketball and football, two boys and four girls participating in the band. These Russians do not speak very good Englishg some of them don't speak any, But some of them speak as many as four or five foreign languages. And now you say, that is all very well, but here we speak English, Well, these people are learning to speak English too, but one must remember that the Russian alphabet is completely different from ours. These people have come to this country seeking refugeg for to them America is the 'Promised Land. We should not tum our backs to them just because their grandfathers did not come over on the Mayflower, or because they were not born in this country. We should welcome them with open arms just as the Statue of Liberty welcomes them as their ship sails into New York Harbor, for on that great lady are these words: 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to break free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these the homeless, tempest tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door. These White Russians have come to our community, they have bought farmsg many of which we had given up, thinking them worthless. They have cultivated them and made them produce, One need only to look at their headquarters to see a great improvement, A great many people do not like the Russians, They turn their backs and laugh at them because they look funny, Many people think they are communists, These Russians are not communists, in fact, they hate communism more than you or I do. For to you and me communism is not much more than a wordg we do not really realize what it is. Many of them have lived under it, They have worked in slave-labor camps, their children were bom in concentration camps, Oh yes, these people know what communism is, These White Russians make you and I better citizens. They make us realize and appreciate the great country in which we live, A short time ago a friend and I were arguing about these Russians and this friend said: 'Why don't they leave America to the Americans? I immediately asked this person, and I ask you, What is an American? Diana Giberson '58 LATE FOR SCHOOL Late for school, that is my motto, I sometimes think Ishould buy an auto, The teachers say it would be nice., If I were on time just once or twi.ce. Gretchen Hodgkins '55 WHAT THE 4-H CLUB MEANS TO ME The 4-H Club is one of the best organizations in the world for boys and girls between ten and twenty-one years of age. It teaches them self-preservation and how to do things for future years. 4-H stands for head, heart, hands and health, and the club motto is, To make the best better, That means a lot if you just stop and think. It means that there is nothing you can't do better than the best, I have been in the regular 4-H club for five years and this will be my fourth year in the Sagadahoc Cattle Club, and believe me, there is not another or- ganization in the country that I would rather belong to. The boys can show their cattle and vegetables at the fairs and sometimes girls show cattle, Some of the best farmers in the country are women, In the 4-H club girls take cooking, home improvement and sewing and when they show their exhibits at the fair, they make the older men and women's things look like nothing, There is an organization in the 4-H club called the IFFY program, IFFY stands for the International Farm Youth Exchange, where a mem- ber of the 4-H from Richmond could exchange places with a boy or girl in France or some other colmtry for a few months, until they learned the farming methods of that cotmtry. 4-H'ers are the cream of the crop and Tomorrow's Leaders of America, Frederick Raynes '57 n THE SEASONS Autumn is when squirrels gather their nuts, build their homes and little huts, Winter is when boys and girls all like to play, and Santa comes in his little sleigh, Spring is when the old folks come out and breath the air, and the children play without care, Summer is when all the people are gay, and the farmers are out cutting their hay. Alden Dore '55 SENIORS OF R, H,S, We are the Seniors of R, H, S, , and of course we think we are the best, The halls echo with our footsteps clear, and the Freshmen cringe when we appear. Next year the Juniors will step into our place, but of course they won't do it with quite as much grace. As we said before, and it's said by the restg We, the Seniors, are still the best, Dorothy Wheeler '55 BOYS I think that I shall never see, A boy who quite appeals to me, A boy who doesn't always wear, A streak of grease upon his hair. A boy without a silly grin, And one who tucks his shirt-tail in, A boy whom cars mean nothing to, But boys like this are very few. Upon whose mind has always been, Sports and cars and sports again. Boys are liked by girls like me, But a perfect one we'll never see! Cynthia Anderson '56 Phyllis Hurley '57 R, H, S, PUPILS OF RICHMOND HIGH Richmond High School, We, the pupils of Richmond High Best by far, Are trying very hard to strive, In all our sports, We're up to par. We have the best In Glee Club and Band, We have the finest in the land. Dolores Kennedy '57 We work and play, and then We say: Farewell, Farewell, to Richmond High, ' Faye Hanson '57 HURRICANE HAZEL The wind howled and the rain came, And many a tree didn't stand the strain, The flood waters rose until at last, The people were forced to get away fast, But as quick as it came, it went away, And the people haven't forgotten to this day. Barbara Wheeler '58 ' so. s o 'QQQAQOQ' I.. 6 5 4 L Y r r If L K 4. L 1 THE SHORT LIFE OF A PUP On a dark stormy nightin the spring of '53, a litter of pups was born in a dreary cold barn. The mother and her tour pups were not discovered for quite a few days. When they were found, all you could see were four squirmy black and white balls 'of fur, with a small resemblance of pointer and spaniel. As the pups grew older, the family who owned them decided it was about time to get rid of them. I got one, a wiggling white fellow with a black face and saddle. I never saw a pup that was so easy to get over leaving his mother and to train. The first thing he learned was to ask to go out when he wanted to. At times he seemed to leam pretty well and at others, he seemed to forget everything he knew. One thing he never forgot though was to sit up and speak for his meals. I-le loved to ride in cars and wasn't the least bit afraid of them. I suppose he should have been, because that's how he was killed, six short months after he was born. Lorraine Bennett '57 NO POEM I sat right here for many hours, and used my head and all it's powers. A little poem I could not write, although I sat here all the night, Last night went out, this morning came, and Ihuug my empty head in shame. This day is gone and Ihave fear that I will not write a poem this year. Phil Dow '55 A FRESHMAN'S LAMENT' Examinations may come and go forever, but when I do these darn old tests, I never pass them, never. This morning first of all, we had English with Mr. Briggs. I got so muddled up in that, I'm sure I must have aged. Next thing was math, and so 'twas said is the easiest of all. If I had my way, it's a cinch I'd make for the study hall. After recess is civics, oh say, what will it be? Some say it is easy, but like math, it's all the same to me. Last but not least is French, at that a dumb-dora am I. It wouldn't be really hard at all, if I knew when, how and why. And if you think you need a rest, good grief, look at me I I Jane Polland '58 Wwgffff Front row, left to right: Billie Wells, Judy Wells, Charlotte Hinkley, Judy Reynolds, Connie Howard, Marilyn Perry, Elaine Horne, Erla McFee, Shirley Vieira, Jeannette Schools, Donna Bixby. We had an average of 57 points a game and our biggest output was against Williams 82 points. The highest individual score was 26 points made by Ron Leibowltz against Winthrop. We went on a Northern trip over the Christmas vacation, which took in Blue Hill and Hermon. Everyone enjoyed themselves and we won both games. We were seeded third in section three in Western Maine and beat Wiscasset 64-54. We met Lisbon Falls in the second game and were beaten 65-54. We thank you, Ann, and hope that you' ll be right back next year. The whole team would like to thank Coach Perry for putting his time in and for helping us to gain our victories. In the final period, Simmons intercepted a pass on the fifteen and Sullivan went over from the nine. Schools plunged the point. Leibowitz scored the last Richmond TD from thirteen yards out. Lisbon 25 -- Richmond '7 Richmond's winning streak was snapped by a strong Lisbon team. The game was close until long runs by Cairns and St. Amant, in the second half, decided the victory. Winthrop 45 -- Richmond 12 Winthrop continued on its win streak at the expense of Richmond. Tomah, Mayo, Philippon, Richardson scored in that order. Despite losing, Richmond played gallantly and drew much praise from the fans. Ronnie Leibowitz's display of running and passing from the spread formation was outstanding. He completed 9 out of 19 passes, and gained most of Richmond's 73 yards on the ground, and threw two touchdown passes to Ed Coughlin ILV.'s Qcont. from 511 Coach O' Brian started out the year with the remains of the squad that was cut from the varsity.
