During Homecoming week we sponsored a sub-eating contest. Another fund raiser was the stick candy sale held at Christmas. We also sponsored a donkey basketball game in March. The proceeds from this game helped to pay for the new section we introduced this year. This was the eight page all color senior section featuring the senior luncheon, prom and graduation. We worked very hard and hope this yearbook will be an important addition to your memories of your high school years. Staff: Mike Carlson, Vickie Rhein, Alicia Haley, Editor; Jeannie Keller. Mid- dle row: Cherie Bauman, Angela Leitzel, Linda Eaves. Back row: Bonnie Voakes, Beth Peinovich, Amy Tschiggfrey. Advisor: Mrs. Chiakmakis. 26 FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLUB The Richmond High School Foreign Language Club is made up of the first, second, and third year French and Spanish classes. This year the club has sold a wide variety of products to raise money. These products range from candy to posters. The money earned from these fund raisers went toward the purchase of jerseys, buttons, and dinner for some of the club. Later this year the club is planning to go on a trip to Toronto, if funds permit. He is 5'7 tall and weighs 150 pounds. His eyes are brown. He was born on February 12 and is 18 years old. Jean loves working at the Richmond Community Theatre. He has been in three plays this year. In America he lives with the Start family. He has visited in Michigan and Canada. Some of his favorite things are U.S. History, Mrs. Philabaum, track, eggs and ham in the morning, lobster and rice, and Summer. Jean likes to dance and is frequently seen at the Premier Center or at the Skate Loft. “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie is his favorite song. Jean’s school is very different from this one. He has 12 classes each week. Every day there is a different schedule to follow. The classes are two hours long, four days a week, but he has a 15 minute break in the morning and a 2 hour open campus lunch. His school does not have school sports, assemblies, or a yearbook. In his free time he is in his 4th year of Judo, in France. John Molander, 18 years old, is from Turku, Finland. His birthday is February 4. He is staying with the Neimi Family. John is 6 feet tall 2 inches, weighs 155 pounds, and has blue eyes. “Start me up” by the Rolling Stones heads his list of favorites. Other favorites include Mr. Addis’ humor, Big Macs, Whoppers, chemistry, and Fridays. John likes to travel and has been to Michigan, New York, Maine, and Connecticut. In Connecticut he visited his twin brother, Henry, who is also an exchange student. John lives in a house with his mother, his father, his one sister, Mikaela, and his brother, Henry. They have no pets, even though John adores dogs. His family here consists of a father, a mother, a three-year-old brother, and 2 dogs. After school John is involved with the school tennis team. At his school, back home, they do not have a school tennis team, but they do party continuously. John’s parties back home consist of mainly just close friends and do not usually evolve into the bashes we hold here, in America. This is Jorgen Nordland. He is from Pitea, Sweden. Jorgen is 18 years old. His birthday is July 12. He is 6 feet tall, 167 pounds, and has blue eyes. He lives with the Zeihms. A list of his favorites include: Computer Science, Mrs. Philabaum, Big Macs, potato dumplings, Summer, and the song “Bodytalk.” He has visited in Michigan, Ohio, Canada, and at Niagara Falls. At our school, Jorgen is involved in tennis and is usually found in the Computer room. Jorgen’s school is like Jean’s except that they do have a yearbook, yeah! They go to high school from one to four years depending on what career they pursue. In Sweden, they date differently than Americans do. Jorgen says that everyone goes out in groups. If a girl is going out with a guy, then she does not go out with anyone else, until they break up. Jorgen likes our system better of going out with two different people in one weekend. 29 HONOR SOCIETY The members of this years Honor Society have certainly fulfilled the organization’s requirements of leadership, character, and service. During this year, the group has continued to support their two “Adopted” children from Columbia and India with monthly donations. In February, the Honor Society held a dance for the purpose of raising funds for needed high school materials. To end the year, the Honor Society is trying to arrange a student exploration program with other schools and their respective Honor Societies. SCIENCE CLUB Ava Weeks, Vice-President; Lisa Porrett, Treasurer; Wendy Walters, Secretary; Emily Winkle, President. This year has been fairly uneventful for the Science Club. But we have managed to have a fund raiser to make money for a computer. We raised seven hundred and fifty dollars selling candy bars and six hundred and fifty dollars was given to us by the school board. Also, many science club members are involved in science fairs and symposiums that are held in early March. These include the school fair, the Science Symposium at Wayne State, and the Cobo Hall Fair. In the near future we hope to have another fund raiser so we can take a trip. Front Row: Mrs. Texley, Advisor; April Kelly, Angela Leitzel, Ava Weeks, Wendy Walters, Emily Winkle, Lisa Porrett, Erik Kamlay, Sharon Emmi, Janet Schweiger, Rhonda Verbrugge. SKI CLUB This year the ski club had many members, but we did little skiing because of the high cost of using a bus. The only activity the ski club had this year was the weekend trip to Blue Mountain in Collingwood, Ontario. We spent 2V6 days skiing, swimming, and sitting in the whirlpool. It was one of the best trips in the past few years although the year itself wasn’t very good for Richmond skiers. Row one: Mr. Mantei, Dawn Lelowicz, Pam Wilmot, Nichol Oprita, Julie Grobble, Ava Weeks, Brian Mellert, Steve Soley. The 1984 Student Council consisting of 28 members and one new adviser, Mr. Rick Kielbasa, did a number of dif- ferent activities this year. We had our first activity in Oc- tober which was the Homecoming Spirit in Motion, which was picked from a con- test we prepared among the students. This was the first year a Disc Jockey played at a R.H.S. Homecoming dance and it was a real success. We then had a Winter Fund Drive that helped support the needy, this was done in November. We had our “Class of” fundraiser, selling pins, key chains, and belt buckles with the student year on them. By the time Christmas was here we had our Christmas dance on December 17, and Night life was our D.J. At the end of the day before Christmas vacation, we had a short assembly greeting Mr. Marv Fistler with a $75 gift certificate, sponsored by the school body. After returning from vacation, a group of three students continued to at- tend the monthly SCOPE meeting in Mt. Clemens. We then had a Red Cross blood drive, which was a giant suc- cess. We had participants from the school and the com- munity. A short time later we had our Valentine’s dance where Mr. Irresistible’s were announced. As the yearbook goes to press, the Student Council is hoping to have another dance, a hypnotist for an assembly, and, last but not least, The Anything Goes Contest! Student Council has done a fine job and is very proud of its achievement and support that it has given the school as well as the community. Student Council Officers: Leann Barnes, Vice President; Linda Barnes, President; Sarah Foster, Treasurer; Janet Stevens, Secretary. 33 VOICE The journalism staff writes, edits, and pastes up the school newspaper, the Voice, which is printed by the graphic arts class in Armada for nominal fee. Advertising and sales account for the funds necessary to meet printing costs. The staff is committed to print a minimum of eight issues per school year. This years editor, Chris Brinkey, kept production flowing smoothly and ten issues of the Voice were printed. Seated: Maria Belemonti, Gina Duvall. Standing: Sally Ryan, Vicki Budzyn, Linda Barnes, Jim Bennett, Christine Brinkey, Kris Gazley, Jennifer Gotz, Dan Dennis, Chris Haviaras. The team had the experience of playing on the artificial turf at the Pontiac Silverdome. The players also got to see themselves on television as two of their games were televised by local cable television companies. In all it was a rewarding and exciting season for everyone that was involved. 37 J.V. Our record was 5 losses and no wins. Don’t let the record deceive you. It was a learning and developing season for our first year. Our coach, Jim Vigus, taught us, through experience, that winning isn’t everything. We learned the fundamentals and basic skills of the game. We worked hard and played with pride. Next year our goal is to be undefeated. VARSITY BASKETBALL Front Row. Gretchen Jakubiak, Mary Ruby, Donna Brogan, Kerstin Meyers, Lisa Monetta Back Row. Practice was held everyday after school from 2:15 till they were done with their workouts. Running during practice, on hard cement, in all kinds of weather, and dodging busses really makes determination to win. Travel to competi- tion was on a bus with the boys track team since both teams were relatively small. Front Row: Jenny Dubay, Vicki Pedrotte, Kelly Crachiolo. She took 2nd place in the 880 run. 65 BOY'S TRACK From the Boy’s Track Team this year, Pete Stemmier is going to the state competition for the two mile run and Dean Buttrey for the high jump. These two boys also broke the school records this year by doing the two mile run in 10.1 and the high jump at 6'5 . The team had four wins and three losses this year. The scores of the meets were: Anchor Bay - - 85 Imlay City — 71 RHS — 77 RHS — 89 Marysville — 115 Algonac — 113 RHS — 48 RHS — 49 St. Clair — 68.5 Marine City — 64 RHS — 94.5 RHS — 99 Cross-Lex — 69.5 RHS - 93.5 Front row (1 to r): Aaron Stoliker, Henry DeFauw, Ed Oliver, Erik Cook, Matt Fistler. Doreen Uhl, Fritz Delinski, Jorgen Nordlund, John The 1983-1984 tennis season was a very busy time with meets every day because the weather made it impossible to carry out the regular schedule. We were able to come out even, with six wins and six loses in the league standings. Seniors dominated the singles and doubles positions on the team with a few hopeful underclassmen holding some spots. We closed out our season by winning our last three meets in a row and gaining enough points to beat three other teams in regional competition. This year’s team holds the best record Richmond High has held in the past six years! 69 VARSITY BASEBALL Top row (1 to r): Jeff Teska, Scott Cousino, Ted Emp- Coach — Wayne Eldred. In the league they won six games and lost six games, but in all they won twelve and lost thirteen. Winning 19 games in a row to start the season was the best start ever for a Richmond team. Winning the Richmond Invitational Tournament was an unattained achievement in past seasons. The Blue Devils took first place by defeating Class A Cousino 3-0 in the finals. The softball team went undefeated through the league schedule and won the SCSL title outright for the first time. Most of the season the varsity team was ranked 1 in the state in the class B division. The girls enjoyed one of the best seasons in Rich- mond Softball history but their season was cut short by a district final loss to Marysville in a game that went 16 innings and ended with a score of 1-0. The 1984 team will be remembered for their con- tinued hard work dedication and positive attitude. The class of 1984. Memories, dreams and friendships. For most of us, our memories will be happy ones. We’ll remember all the fun and crazy times we’ve had in school and out of school, and we’ll remember the times we pulled together to accomplish what we had to, like the building of our floats and our sophomore Mexican Chowdown. Our dreams will be great, but always in reach, and most of them will come true. The friendships that have grown over the years will always be treasured and the close bond our class has will never be lost. The class of 1984. As Juniors, we had the pleasure of planning and putting on the prom. The prom this year was held at Welsh’s Banquet Hall and the band was Finesse. To help prepare us financially for the prom, we had a candy bar sale. We hope we can have an even better year as Seniors! The teams consisted of the Lion’s Club and middle school staff vs. the firemen and the high school staff. It started at 7:00 p.m. and went to 12:00 a.m. Dinner consisted of mostachelli, roast beef, turkey, rolls, salad, corn, and mashed potatoes. The dancing started at 8:30 p.m. and the band featured was Finesse. 159 The Senior Banquet was held at Welsh’s Banquet Hall. It started at 6:15 on May 10, 1984. The first thing we did was eat. There was salad, mostechelli, and meatballs. After dinner, we settled down to hear the Senior Class Wills and Prophecies. When the laughter died down, the dancing began. Who will ever forget the theme from Footloose? 163 164 166 Well, this was our last year. It started out a dull roar and never stopped. There are many memories we, the seniors of 1984, will remember: The first time we walked into the senior hall — The bonfire and the snake dance, which had us running down the middle of main street and building pyramids — The fiercely fought, though lost, Homecoming game (right Mitch Raska?) — Cap and gown measurements — The parties at Hensch’s — How we womped the competition during Spirit Week and during Almost Anything Goes — Pete Stemmier walking on his hands — Working at Medilodge, Burger King, Hensch’s, K-Marts, or Polewach’s — The Preimer Center — Advanced Math II Pizza Parties — The Florida trip and the shining moons there — Passing out senior pictures — Term papers for Mr. Addis — The practice for graduation and the water fights at Burger King during Lunch (we all had passes) — graduation — graduation parties! With all these memories let us not forget each other. 167 GOOD BYE, GOOD LUCK CLASS OF 84 Congratulations, Class of 1984 Our seniors have proven it.
