At the turn of the century, the “Blue Devil” was a French skier. His blue garb and daring exploits were well known, and his nickname was adopted by a French infantry division in World War I. The 88th regiment of the United States Army, which trained with the French “Blue Devils” in 1917, also adopted the group’s nickname. The American regiment was honored for its valor in both World W ar I, and later in World War II, when its victories in Italy were won with over 13,000 casualties. Richmond’s sports teams share their nickname with the teams of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. This year a controversy arose in Richmond over the symbolism of the “Blue Devil”. A survey of students indicated overwhelming support for the mascot. The controversy resulted in a new interest in the history of the name, and its association with bravery and patriotism. For ten years, Mr. Rettke held the difficult dual role of athletic director and assistant principal. While his job as disciplinarian often made him seem stern to some students, the athletes with whom he worked appreciated his devotion to Richmond High. He is now principal of Richmond Middle School. His years of helping Richmond students are acknowl- edged in this dedication.
