ECHO 1960 The RHS Echo Staff Richmond, Michigan TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication 2 Faculty 5 Seniors 13 Juniors 27 Sophomores 33 Freshmen 39 Jr„ High 45 Activities 53 Classes 59 Organizations 67 Athletics 79 Advertisers 95 Senior Index 107 DEDICATION We, the members of the 1960 ECHO staff, wish to dedicate our yearbook for 1960 to Mr. Alex Nelson, our superintendent, for his tireless effort in making the dream of a new high school become a reality; to Mr. Chris Strutz, our senior custodian, for the friendly and kind manner in which he has always treated the student body; and to Mr. Ed Beier, in memoriam, for the part he played in helping pass the school bond issue. We wish to thank these men for their devotion to Richmond High School. Mr. Alex Nelson, teacher, counselor, administrator, has the unenviable duty of keeping the Richmond school system out of debt and of seeing that it functions smoothly throughout the years. He is, perhaps more than any other single in- dividual, responsible for the “new look” at Richmond High. Look at the “then” on Park Street; look at the “new” on Division; you will see the result of his labor. 2 1960 Mr. Chris Strutz, “Chris,” as he is affectionately called by students and fac- ulty alike, has been on the custodial staff since 1955. Before moving into the new school, Chris had a near impossible task, that of keeping the old building warm in winter, cool in summer, and always clean. Besides all this, he always found time to do those special jobs and favors that were so often asked of him. IN MEMORIAM . . . Mr. Ed Beier, a common name for an un- common man, Lennox township treasurer, citizen of the community, passed away on December 27, 1959. He did many things for the school and the community that have gone unreported, that are known by but a few people. Many students knew of Mr. Beier only as a man who owned a flower shop; only a few knew of him as a man interested in a good education for all, but he was, very much so. 3 RICHMOND BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. Harold N. Weller President The Board of Education has shown their interest and abil- Dr. Kenneth S. Gingrich ity in running our school sys- Secretary tern through the many duties they perform and the excellent planning of new school. We take this opportunity to ex- press our sincere apprecia- tion for their splendid devo- tion to their community. Mr. Edward L. Ball Treasurer Mr. J. Gordon Ferguson Trustee Mr. James A. The Civic Auditorium was deco- rated in brown and green streamers with leaves and footballs to climax the fall football season. Enjoyable dance music was pro- vided by Tom Simms and by Pat Spencer and his Princetons, who played during intermission. 54 CAST; SENIORS INNER WILLY” Seated: M. Merritt; J. Rasmussen; D. Vogt; J. MISTY” J-HOP The theme of the 1960 Junior Prom was carried out by ever- greens, angel-hair, and murals painted on paper. Crepe paper streamers were hung from the cen- ter of the ceiling to the floor. The Prom, presented on January 16, in the Civic Auditorium, was chaper- oned by Miss Reed and Mr. and Mrs. Krause. It proved to be very beautiful and entertaining for those who attended. The Silo-ettes pro- vided an evening full of enjoyable, dreamy, dance music. 56 PRESENTED BY JUNIORS 57 LEARNING ABOUT THE WORLD Through world history we learn about other nations in our world. In sociology class Mr. Boldt explains to the seniors about about life and society. We learn to be better citizens in Mr. Ketch- um’s civics class. INTERESTS ARE DEVELOPED IN THE LIBRARY Mrs. Snitchler, Miss Work- man, and their staff aid in developing library skill at Richmond High. THE FOREIGN LANGUAGES Through Spanish class, in- terested students are better able to understand the langu- age and customs of our Southern neighbors. Hasta la vista, Senor Nash! STUDENT PUBLICATIONS Students in journalism class learn how to publish yearbooks and newspapers. The 4th hour class emphasizes the yearbook, while 6th hour emphasizes the newspaper. 61 WRITING AND SPEAKING ENGLISH “Et tu Brute!” Perhaps this is what is being said is Miss Workman’s sophomore English class as they studyShakespeare’s tragedy Julius Caesar. In speech class students learn how to compose and deliver formal and informal speeches. 62 CAN SHE BAKE A CHERRY PIE? Practical experience in Homemaking I is learned under the guidance of Miss Matthews, an expert in the culinary arts. RICHMOND’S JUNIOR BAND The future music makers at RHS are under the direction of Mr. Robertson. SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES ARE EXPLAINED Mr. Jenkins explains the simple circuit to his freshmen science class. Who devisedNewton’slaw of falling bodies? Perhaps this is the question Miss Reed’s physics class is so earnestly seeking to find the answer to. The first hour chemistry class is performing a chem- ical experiment. 64 BUSINESS WORLD CALLS TO COMMERCIAL STUDENTS The goal for our 2nd year typing students is to type from 70 to 75 words per minute. Under the direction of Mrs. Goodar, the of- fice practice students receive experience in filing, telephone usage, typing and other neces- sities in effectively running an office. Miss Harper’s 4th hour bookkeeping students learn how to make out profit and loss statements, worksheets and the other various steps in keeping books. 65 SKILLS ARE DEVELOPED IN ART In Mrs. Perret’s art class students develop their abil- ities in drawing, oil-painting, carving and enameling. MATHEMATICS Rectangles, octagons and triangles present many prob- lems to the students of plane geometry. Students interested in the mathematical field may go on to Algebra II and trig- onometry, all taught by Mr. Nash. MECHANICAL DRAWING Precision and accuracy are learned by those taking draft- ing. 66 R. H. S. VOICE SEATED: F. Neff; J. Rasmussen;C. Leenknegt; J. Breese; J. Jenkins; D. Schultz. STANDING: P.
