s V the Heat On June 6th at 3:00 p.m. the last bell of the 1984-85 school year sounded and doors opened for students to face 82 heat-filled, f ull-filled days of summer. The first reaction to the freedom was to finally relax, or possibly start on your tan. Junior Vicki Somrack commented, When I got out of school I hit the beach, went to concerts, and went ot parties, it was mint! Many people took to the beaches. These included Mentor Headlands, Euclid Beach, or Edgewater Park. Beaches provided a good place to meet new people, gather with friends, swim, or just lay out and listen to music. I go to the beach because there ' s a lot of cute guys and I like to get a good tan, stated Junior Michelle Dietz. While many people took the easy way out, other students spent their summers work- ing. I worked this summer to gain ex- perience and earn some extra spending money. commented sophomore Lori When I got out of school it was mint to just lie around on trie sand. Klein. Summer jobs included lifeguarding, landscaping, working in concession stands, umpiring, camp counciling, or other indoor occupations. A new sports education camp run in the elementary school proved very successful as senior Stacey DiFranciso states, I thought the camp was great for the first year. I enjoyed working with the children. Another option was to participate in one of the sports offered by the Richmond Hts. Recreation Department. Some students competed on the swim team, played tennis, softball, or baseball. The girls softball and boys baseball traveling teams proved quite successful. Junior Brian Schwenk boasts, We had every one back from last year and we knew we were gonna win! Some students just couldn ' t live without school during the summer. These people attended summer school at either St. Joes or Euclid High Schools. This also provided Gathering at Mentor Headlands, sophomore girls relax in the sun and listen to music. Beaches served as a good way to meet new people. Shown in their Hilton Head Island shirts are graduates Jeff Zitei and Mike Gasser. Such vacations allowed the graduates a last chance to get together before leaving for prospective colleges. 12-

ck 1 Uinfl a good way to meet new people as sopho- more Jill Saelzler states, Summer school gave me a chance to meet some gorgeous guys! On June 16th there was also a dinner held in honor of Mr. Micheal P. Papouras, who retired from duty as Richmond Hts. ' head wrestling coach. This was held at Borally ' s and had quite a large turnout. Many students put in time at summer camps. These included drill team, majorettes, cheerleaders, yearbookers, newspaper, and some wrestlers. As summer came to an end, football players, band members, and volleyball players also began practices. In addition many families took summer vacations to different parts of the country. On the return to school, classmates would swap stories about visits to Disneyworld in Florida or the deep caverans of the Grand Canyon. For other students a trip Mentor Headlands would be the extent of the summer vacation. Closer to home were the summer con- certs held at Blossom and the Coliseum. Obviously the highlight of the summer was the appearance of Bruce Springsteen at the Stadium. For that one night the scalpers were able to get more than $500. for a seat. On the less expensive side, concerts at Blossom consisted of Michael Stanley and other rock groups. Four yearbookers and one newspaper photographer traveled across Ohio to attend a one week workshop at Bowling Green State University. Even though we had hardly any leisure time, it still was an exciting experience, commented Dmitry Nepomnayshy. As quickly as summer came in, it was taken away. Students began preparing for the beginning of another year which started on August 28th , as graduates said their last goodbyes and headed for perspective jobs the Heat e waters of Lake Erie tempered the ex- irinasteen concert. 1
