s V the Heat On June 6th at 3:00 p.m. the last bell of the 1984-85 school year sounded and doors opened for students to face 82 heat-filled, f ull-filled days of summer. The first reaction to the freedom was to finally relax, or possibly start on your tan. Junior Vicki Somrack commented, When I got out of school I hit the beach, went to concerts, and went ot parties, it was mint! Many people took to the beaches. These included Mentor Headlands, Euclid Beach, or Edgewater Park. Beaches provided a good place to meet new people, gather with friends, swim, or just lay out and listen to music. I go to the beach because there ' s a lot of cute guys and I like to get a good tan, stated Junior Michelle Dietz. While many people took the easy way out, other students spent their summers work- ing. I worked this summer to gain ex- perience and earn some extra spending money. commented sophomore Lori When I got out of school it was mint to just lie around on trie sand. Klein. Summer jobs included lifeguarding, landscaping, working in concession stands, umpiring, camp counciling, or other indoor occupations. A new sports education camp run in the elementary school proved very successful as senior Stacey DiFranciso states, I thought the camp was great for the first year. I enjoyed working with the children. Another option was to participate in one of the sports offered by the Richmond Hts. Recreation Department. Some students competed on the swim team, played tennis, softball, or baseball. The girls softball and boys baseball traveling teams proved quite successful. Junior Brian Schwenk boasts, We had every one back from last year and we knew we were gonna win! Some students just couldn ' t live without school during the summer. These people attended summer school at either St. Joes or Euclid High Schools. This also provided Gathering at Mentor Headlands, sophomore girls relax in the sun and listen to music. Beaches served as a good way to meet new people. Shown in their Hilton Head Island shirts are graduates Jeff Zitei and Mike Gasser. Such vacations allowed the graduates a last chance to get together before leaving for prospective colleges. 12-
