A local chapter of the National Beta Club, a leadership service organization for high school students of America, was established on Thursday, December 13, 1956, at Richlands High School. Objectives of this non-secret, leadership service organization are: to encourage ef¬ fort, to promote character, to stimulate achievement among the members, and to encourage and assist students to continue their education after high school graduation. Mrs. Clark Brown was appointed sponsor for the local chapter. Permanent officers for this year are: President — Bill Joe Massie Vice-President — Eugene Cruey Secretary — Alice Casey Treasurer — Gene Hurst Historian — Martha Ringstaff Six members of the club. Bill Joe Massie, Alice Casey, Martha Ringstaff, Gene Hurst, Ruth Stilwell, and Jane Clear, attended the State Convention of Virginia Beta Clubs held in Richmond. They were accompanied by their sponsor, Mrs. Clark Brown. 25

SECOND ROW: Hattie Waddell, Betty Pyott, Elizabeth Meredith, Becky Walls, Cora Mullens, Jackquetta Ratliff, Connie Howington, and Wanda McGuire. THIRD ROW: Sue Craig, Linda Sizemore, Judy Bucklen, Anita Price, Joanne Bordwine, Bertina Shelton, and Thelma Ward. FOURTH ROW: Hazel Brown, Pat Runyon, Janice Griffith, Larry Webb, Fred Barrett, Margaret Lowry; Ac¬ companist, and Donnie Smith. FIFTH ROW: Sam Barnette, Kenneth Steele, Jonce Wright, Fred Altizer, and Mr. Toney, Director. The Choir, consisting of both male and female voices, was organized in September of 1958. It has participated in various functions in and around the school. A Concert was held on May 15 and 17 which was presented to the school and public. Instead of having a banquet this year, the Choir agreed upon a day of recreation at Hungry Mother’s State Park in Marion, Virginia. This took place on May 23. Membership in the Choir is open to those students who enjoy music.
