HOMECOMING One of the outstanding activities of the fall season was Homecoming, spon¬ sored by the Student Council. Preliminaries for the big day began with the selection of candidates for king and queen and members of their court by members of the student body. A parade through town to the High School was one of the highlights of the occasion. Richlands played Graham in an exciting game which was marred by a one point defeat. King Tommy Norman and Queen Mary Jane Smith were crowned by Mr. Powers during half time. A dance was held in the cafeteria fol¬ lowing the game. Members of the foot¬ ball team were honored at this dance by presentation of miniature footballs given to each player by the S.C.A. Queen Mary Jane Smith and King Tommy Norman. Tom’s View Boy’s State will always be one of the happiest memo¬ ries of my high school days. We left for Blacksburg on Sunday morning, arriving in time to register and to be assigned to our rooms and cities. A city consists of fifty boys. The cities competed in various sports and political elections. The most important thing in every city was the selecti on of a sister city. After writing mushy letters to many of the girl’s cities, Bar¬ rett City finally accepted our enticing offers and be¬ came our ‘sister city.’ The demerit system was used to determine when each city would eat. Our city judged by army style in¬ spection never was the first to eat a meal. At 5:30 every morning, we were forced out of our comfortable beds onto the wet grass and drilled for twenty minutes in rigid calisthenics. After breakfast, we attended speeches given by state politicians; these became quite boring as we heard the same jokes and same praises “You are the cream of the crop; Vir¬ ginia’s finest.” Most of us slept through these speeches. We had political parties, Federalist and Nationalist. Elections and conventions were held just like those in the state of Virginia. The only thing I didn’t like about Boy’s State was that we didn’t get to see the girls very often. I mean we could see them, but we couldn’t get close to them. The Governor’s Ball climaxed a week packed with good clean fun and knowledge of our state govern¬ ment. We could take real live girls to this dance; after a girl-less week, this was indeed a pleasure. I really enjoyed Boy’s State because of the people I met and the friends I made. I would like to thank all the people who made it possible for me to attend. 47 ACTIVITIES James Cox presents Jerry Dye with the Science Award. ERNIE HICKS STADIUM The dedication ceremonies for the new Ernie Hicks Stadium were held on October the twenty-first, nineteen hundred and fifty-seven, preceding the football game with Virginia High School of Bristol, with attorney T. G. Shufflebarger acting as master of ceremonies. The invocation was given by the Reverend Nelson T. Barker of the First Baptist Church of Richlands. Mr. J. M. White, a member of the Tazewell County School Board, traced the growth and development of schools and athletics in Tazewell County over the past three decades. An interesting talk was given by Mr. W. S. Powers, Principal of Richlands High School, in which he enumerated some of the ways that the new field could be used to advantage in the school program, such as commencement exercises, May Day pro¬ grams, etc. Dr. A. B. Williford, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Richlands, gave the dedicatory prayer. The highlight of the ceremonies was the dedicatory address given by Mr. Homer Allen, President of the Maiden Springs District Athletic Association. It was through the efforts of this associ¬ ation that funds were raised and the stadium was made possible. Mr. Allen, also, unveiled the beautiful marker at the entrance to the field on which the following is inscribed: ERNIE HICKS STADIUM “Dedication to K. M. “Ernie” Hicks in his thirty-fourth year at Richlands High School in gratefu l appreciation of his sincere devotions to the youth of the Richlands area and for his inspir¬ ing them to ' achieve the finest in character and the best in sportsmanship.” Coach Hicks concluded the program with a few words of ap¬ preciation to the people who had made the stadium possible. He expressed his thanks for the honor bestowed upon him and had a grateful word of appreciation for the youth with whom he had been associated down through the years. Fifty seniors and two chaperones left school in a downpour of rain at midnight, May 27, on a bus which seated only 48 passengers. The two chaperones, Miss Huffman and Mr. Blankenship, were royally entertained and fed by the excited seniors. At dawn the bus made its first stop, where the group visited the Atomic Museum at Oak Ridge. The next stop was at Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, Tenn., where the students rode the steepest railroad in the U.S. A weary, but interesting, ride brought them to Atlanta where they spent their first night. Early the next morning the bus was boarded for Silver Springs, Florida; there a ride in glassbottom boats and a tour through the Ross Allen Reptile Farm were made. Late in the afternoon the bus reached Datona Beach the “Shangra-La” of the trip. Swimming, motor scooter rides, sun bathing, a trip to Marineland and a visit to the amusement park climaxed the trip to Florida. A tired, sunburned group returned to Richlands, Fri¬ day night.
