SECOND ROW: Miss Hunter-Sponsor, Bonnis Smith, Eulis Patrick, J. W. Overbay, Clydette Patterson, Mrs. Smith-Sponsor. ln September it began - the process of taking pictures! The students became camera conscious , as the boys were forced into white shirts, coats, and tiesg girls into sweaters and accessories. Mr. Mosseller worked patiently, while the staff checked and rechecked long lines of students for correct dress. Then came the long and tedious process of putting out the annual, proofreading copy, conferring with Mr. Fields, and meeting deadlines. A very common scene around the auditorium was Mr. Roisch trailed by Miss Hunter, Mrs. Smith, and the staff loaded with equipment in an attempt to give a complete pictorial record of Richlands High School. Day after day the staff groped for new ideas - some lost in thought, searching for inspiration - others, fClydette and I.W.l in the back of the room talking - Phyllis, Loretta or Sue typing - Bonnie designing pages - and Eulis reading a book. Finally, after working late at night and after school, ideas developed and inspirations came. Some of the highlights for the staff were: a Christmas banquet at Wimpy's, a trip through the Kelly and Greene Plant at Bristol, and a course in photography while thereg and most important of all, the yearly trip to Lexington where new methods in annual editing are studied, Now that it is over, it is the sincere hope of the staff that this edition of The Tornado will be a record which you will cherish in later years. The all-important quarterback position was questionable with Dave Lawson, who had almost no game experience, the leading candidate, however, Dave proved that he could ably fill the posi- tion, developed into one of the best field generals in the school's history. Much of the success of the team can be credited to his fine leadership. This is meant in no way to detract from the fine team play of the whole squad, which was made up ofa group of cooperative, hard-fighting, spirited boys. The season's record of six wins and four losses compares fa- vorably with records of other Tornado teams down through the years. This year's record was compiled against all the best teams in the newly formed Southwest District of group one schools, and three of the four losses were by a lone touchdown. 36 af., ' -Y S r-x 1 A - 1 , ' ,' .. That night Seniors from New Jersey presented a tal- ent show inviting the Richlands group to attend. A dance followed. Through no fault of their own, all were in bed by 11:30 feven Jimmy Baileyl. The nest morning, after having had breakfast fno chickenl they disembarked at Old Point Comfort. T he ever faithful bus drivers were there to meet them. The buses stopped at Hampton for ll tour of the Mar- iner's Museum. To the delight of the government stu- dents, a model of the Titanic was found among the display of model ships. The next stop was Colonial Williamsburg, where the enthusiastic Seniors stepped into the past and relived the Eighteenth Century as they visited the Covernonk Palace, the Capitol, and many other Esistorical places. At the conclusion of the Williamsburg tour, '.-.'3.ere they had learned to appreciate thc difference in the orig- inal and the duplicate, several boys tested the stocks at the gaol. Jack Booth proceded to demonstrate how he could escape -but after several attempts, was forced to give up. Afterltinehlwhich was an unpleasant experience for the Seniors on one bttsj the group visited the James- town Festival. Here Ann Ringstaif fell for the sol- diers who were portraying citizens of colonial James- town, Daisy became so enthralled with these early eitizens that she ran into a post. This tour also proved most interesting for Joe and Keith as their guide was an attractive young lady. The transition into the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries was so realistic, the group armed themselves with water guns and proceeded to relive the Revolu- tionary days inVirginia. After the chaperones had con- fiscated the weapons, peace reigned and the trip to Richmond was uneventful. After checking into Hotel Jefferson, there was the usual rush to eat, but this time to reach the Holloway House before closing time. A kind doorman allowed the g'IOlip to enter exen though it was closing time. That night the Seniors divided into small groups - some x-.ent bowling, others slept through the Spirit of St. Louis and still others enjoyed Designing Lady . harlythe next morning everyone was on the bus ready to start ontime, except Miss Huffman and Miss Hunter - the desk clerk had failed to call them. Two students from Richmond Professional Institute acted as guides for the tour of the city of Richmond. Here the group sawzritir State Capitol, St. Jot.n's Churti., and the Con- federate Museum. The trip continued in the direction of Southwest Virginia. At Charlottesville the group shopped and ate lunch.
