MiiHtnn mmm n n o • ornadoes L ' 48 By Walter Mosley August 21, a hot sunny day, and the first day of grid practice for the Blue Tornadoes. Although Coach Hicks failed to have the experienced boys as in past years, he did have a determined group of lads who yearned to put on those cleated shoes and don those dusty helmets, and to fight for the glory of R. H. S. Their eagerness meant much to Coach Hicks, so he set to work with a squad—some thirty strong—to mold a team that was to do such running, blocking and tackling that even their most ardent fans were sur¬ prised, for they were faced with one of the toughest schedules they had ever tackled. That Mr. Hicks succeeded most admirably is attested to by the fact that the Tornadoes downed some of the finest ball handlers in this section of the country. September 10: The Pocahontas Indians ventured to the home of the Tornadoes to re¬ ceive a 13 to 0 loss at the hands of the boys in blue. September 17 ; The big boys from Saltville traveled to Richlands to be turned away with a 13 to 0 victory for the superior Tornadoes. September 24: This week the Blue Boys traveled to meet the high stepping Grundy Golden Wave and again the Tornadoes turned back some very fine pigskin packers to the tune of 9-0. October 1: This week the Tornadoes remained at home to meet a tough team from Marion but again when the final whistle sounded the Tornadoes were on the top side of a hard earned 7-0 score, due in part to the four 5 yard penalties called on Marion for offsides. October 8: Again the Tornadoes were to meet their ancient rivals, the Tazewell Bulldogs, on the R. H. S. field to battle to the bitter end. The Buldogs were here to take another step toward that county championship, and the Tornadoes were out to avenge the defeat handed them in ' 47 by the Bulldogs. After a very tough battle the Bulldogs fell at the feet of the Tornadoes by a score of 12-7. October 15: The Tornadoes traveled to the home of the Graham G-Men to take over the county championship but Coach Dalton ' s boys were all primed and set for the Blue Boys. After the smoke cleared away the Tornadoes were on the little end of a 6-0 score. October 22: The Tornadoes visited the most powerful team in the seventh district, the Bristol Bearcats of Virginia High, took a very bad beating and came out standing up. At the final whistle the score read Bearcats 54—Tornadoes 0. October 29: The Tornadoes played host to a West Virginia team, the Gary Coal- diggers who won the district championship in their area. After some of the most tragic fumbles ever to afflict the Tornadoes—eight times in the first quarter—the Gary boys walked away victorious to the tune of 14-18. Despite the fumbles and the loss of the game, spectators commented that this was one of the best games of the season. November 5: Coach Hick ' s boys traveled to Wise on this date to tangle with a nice little team and to come home with another victory chalked up, the score reading 26-6. November 12: The final game of the season was on this date when the Blue Tor¬ nadoes met the Tornadoes of William King High School of Abingdon on the Richlands field. After a hard fought battle the Blue Tornadoes emerged victorious with a score of 33-13.
