The effective work of the Council with the assistance of Miss Zeigler, faculty advisor, has made our year a more pleasant one. The well planned handbooks distributed in September have been a ready reference tool; the Christmas dance for the student body added to the gaiety of our year; and the cooperation of the Council representing the student body with the administration has made a smoother year for all of us. ( William Mary Secretary to Principal Guidance Director e cheat ion To Mr. Robinson and Miss Zeigler who have labored so long and faithfully day after day for the good of the school, the students, and the faculty,- who have shown always that the welfare of the student is most important in their minds,- who always are ready to listen sympa¬ thetically to our problems or help us solve the questions that confuse us,- without whom our years here would be infinitely poorer, we dedicate this, the eleventh edition of THE TORNADO. Meadows — Coach Hicks — Captain Whitt — Assistant Coach Morgan l 9 ues of IQ4 7 by GUY HANKINS and QUENTIN BENNETT In the fall o f every year millions of people across the nation turn out to thrill to the clashes on the gridirons, and R. H. S. fans are no exception. Although the Tornadoes didn ' t hand in a record quite as good as the previous year, they had one of the largest followings in their history. The team, like all R. H. S. teams, had plenty of fighting spirit and cooperation. They won six games and lost only three, facing tough opposition in every game. In the season ' s opener, which was played on home grounds, the Tornadoes rolled through Clintwood 18-6. A powerful aggregation from Wise visited Richlands next and handed the Tor¬ nadoes their first defeat in sixteen starts — 13-12. Trekking to Pocahontas to meet the Indians who went on the warpath, the Tor¬ nadoes emerged victorious by a score of 6-0. Their old foes from Buchanan County, Grundy ' s Golden Wave, could not blow hard enough, and the Blue Boys swept through to a 26-13 victory. With three wins and one loss under their belts, the Tornadoes next played on the Marion field. The result of a hard fought battle was Tornadoes 14 — Marion 6. Fans from all over Southwest Virginia turned out to see the highlight of the year when the Tornadoes journeyed to Tazewell to play the Bulldogs for the county title. The last two minutes proved fatal to the Tornadoes and the Bulldogs won 12-0. Graham ' s G-Men were in high spirits when they came to Richlands and they carried home a 24-0 victory. The Tornadoes recovered the following week-end and banged out a 14-12 victory from the visiting Bristol Bearcats. Our final game was played in Abingdon against the Golden Tornadoes of William King High School. The final whistle sounded when the score read Richlands 14 — Abingdon 0. Thus ended another great season for our Blue Tornadoes. This year we lose Tommy Reynolds, our star for the past three seasons, who was again named on the All-Area squad. Paul Wingo, Robert Crigger, Harold Childress, Dickie Dalton, David Smith, Earl Ringstaff. Buford Childress, Fred Wilson, Roger Stallard, Charles Sayers, Bob Belcher, Bill Shreve, Roscoe Smith. Bobby Shorfridge, Pearl Shreve, Bill Lockhart, Kermit Justice, Haskel Lawhorn, Benny Palmer. George Van Dyke, Ed Van Dyke, Curtis Mabe, Bill Robinette, Curtis Mullins, Lynwood McGlothlin, Manager. COACH FITZER The 1947-48 Basketball season, one of the best in many years, held many thrills for the Tornadoes and their fans. At the end of the season they had a five hundred percentage with ten victories and ten defeats. Rimmer and Buchanan, Tornado forwards, were outstanding all season and both had high scoring percentages. In the annual Tazewell County Basketball Tournament the Tornadoes lost out in the semi-finals 44-36. Bill Lockhart, Joe Adair, Dave Jessee, Fred Wilson, George Van Dyke. James Leedy, Robert Crigger, Bobby Shortridge, John Buskill, Kenneth Mercer, C. R. Ringstaff. arsi The Tornado Jayvees also had a successful season, banging out four victories and dropping four games. The boys, although they were beginners, played and cooperated exceptionally well. ☆ by GUY HANKINS and QUENTIN BENNETT In the spring of 1947 baseball came back to R. H. S. for the first time in eighteen years. Although the game was new to most of the boys, Coach Ernie Hicks turned out an excellent team, a team that not only had an excess of good old R. H. S. fighting spirit, but one that cooperated and worked with machine-like precision. The boys — some thirty strong — turned out the first day for practice, and with their willingness and Coach Hicks ' ability, a great team was produced. With the best support pitchers can get, Whitt and Howard led the Tornadoes to the District and Taze¬ well County Championships, winning ten games and losing only one. Lambert and Helmandollar were standout sluggers for the Tornadoes all season, each ending the season with averages over the five hundred mark. Charles Fireball Whitt blazed the ball past 94 batters to rack up 8 wins against no losses. Jack Pud Howard pitched sterling ball and as a starter won two and lost one, also doing great work as a relief man. SCHEDULE R. H. S. R. H. S. at Pocahontas_ 19 R. H. S. at Garden _ 12 R. H. Immediately the class organized and began the publication of a bi-weekly school paper — quite fittingly christened the BLUE AND WHITE BANNER, a name submitted by Clarence Johnson, a freshman. The staff and assistants have ' done a good job under trying conditions, and the appearance of the BANNER every other Monday morning is an event that keeps blue Monday from being blue. Highway 460, is beside a railroad, and also has a number of buses entering and leaving the grounds during the day, it is imperative there be some patrol system to direct the hundreds of students during the most congested hours of the day. The Safety Patrol under the direction of Mr. Robinson has proved efficient and willing. The boys are to be commended for their service. « msc raw jC • President ...
