Cfaaa Adfory Now the History of the C la s s of Forty and Nine of the I-lighSchool of the City of Richlands County of Onslow State of North Carolina is in this wise In the beginning in the fortieth and fifth year of our Lord in the ninth month and on the third day of the month there entered into this Land of Learning fifty and six s eeke r s of knowledge Some came from the eighth g ra de where they had for many months been busily engaged in storing their minds with the honey of wisdom some came from farms whe r e they had been tillers of soil and some were from halls of in struction And it came to pass as they did enter this land that they were received with wild welcomings and rejoicing by those who xt is decreed should henceforth lead them up the slippery by way of knowledge And as they dwelt long in the land Mrs Trexler helped them fall in with the custom of the inhabitants thereof and their strangeness wore away and they each became as one among the rest Now it came to pass soon after they entered the land they were one and all seized with strange infirmities Wise men were called to look upon them who did examine them with much pains and did finally pronounce the infi rmity in the male and female basketball And it came to pass after some months that their eye s were turned toward graduation but many, with one consent began to make excuses. The first said Imust needs toil at home There- fore I cannot graduate. The s e c on d said I must leave Richlands High School because my family is moving. The third said 'I must leave in order to go to prep-school. Thus our class was made smaller. Now it came to pass at the beginning of the second year it so happened that this land to which we had come was ruled over by one known as Mr. D. G. Shaw, a professor of much wisdom and at the beginning of the second year he spake un- to us saying: Go gather ye in a body and organ- ize yourselves into a class that ye may gain in strength and that your courage may wain not. And as he spake unto them so was it done and they chose their wisest ones to be leaders and calledthemselveswithmuch pride The Class of Forty and Nine. In this year of our Lord, this class contained forty and seven students, with a busy year ahead of them. There was basketball for some, halloween play cheer leading baseball, and a king and queen for our class at the end of the year. We again lost some of our students to go to prep-school one was ma r r i e d, another joined the army some remained in the same grade and some quit. With the help of Miss Good- win and Mrs. Reid we were on our way forward. Now as a much smaller class of twenty and six we journeyed on our way into a year which was much busie r than we had ever dreamed. There was money to be raised for the Junior Senior Banquet a play tobe given and many other outside activities The class of fo rty and nine with Mrs Ross help and Miss Austin s splendid direction of our Junior Play we raised the money needed for our banquet which was a great affair for us Then c a me the wonderful day when we were to select our rings There was much excite ment We were to get them in the fall At the end of this year of our Lord five of our class members were rnarshals Thus we were to be upper classmen at last But when we came back there were only twe nty and two seniors Now this fourth year of the history of this great and wonderful Class of Forty and Nine has been one of much hard labor with little resting by the wayside for preparations have been in the making for them to take their final departure from the land The small Class of Forty and Nine began its busy year with a bang We all twenty and two were very excited 1-'irstwe selected our Class Officers Newspaper Staff and Annual Staff We proudly displayed our class rings of blue and gold Graduation seemed nearer whenwe ordered our invitations and were measuredfor our caps and gowns And lo the day arrivedfor the sen iors to try out for the class play And behold' Dan Cupid did take away one member of our class And it came to pass that the play Green Stockings was given onthe eve of March twenty and five. lt was a great success due to the won- de rfulguidance of Miss Austin and Miss Howard. During this year lvtiss Howard s enduring patience helped us seniors do much that we felt we could never do. So it has come to pass that of the fifty and six that entered this land in forty and five only twenty and one will depart for verily verily I say unto you, that broad is the gate and wide is the way that leadeth to the High School, and many there be that go in thereat' but strait is the gate and narrowis the way that leadeth to graduation and few there be that find it. Four years hath the Class oflforty and Nine sojourned in the land and gathered in large por- tions the fruits from the Tree ofKnowledge. But it is written 'In the day when ye shall have eaten of all these fruits ye shall surely be driven forth from the land! Now, I say unto you they must depart thence,to go eacha separate way to lands they know not of, to do they know not what. But let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not.
