The one above was taken from the northwest in the winter of the i958-'59 school year and shows the rear of the old portion of the building with the new addition to the south . The scene below was taken several years ago from the interesection at the northeast corner of the school ground. lt.will serve to indicate how it appeared before the paving was laid and much of the shrubbery removed . Many more bicycles line the front of the building today. Board of Education SEATED: QLeft to Rightl: Dr. T. R. Wolf, Dale Sasseen, Donald Tucker, President, Howard Thomas. Q- v, ,Q V ,fi V: Dig,-,ig-Y and poise Little ladies look lovely Proud Parents We receive our diplomas Our Class Prophecy Time: T969 Place: The Hallowed Halls of R. H . S . Occasion: Reunion of the Class of T959 The main portion of the program consisted of a crystal gazing session during which the following was revealed concerning each member of the Class of 1959. First of all surrounded by a mass of screaming girls comes 'Rock Erwin, better known to is classmates as ' Kenny He began his acting career at R. H . S . where he was known as lady killer. He attributes his great success with women to his experience at R . H . S . where his motto was Love 'em and leave 'em. A roar of mufflers, a screech of brakes and a cloud of dust announces the arrival of Fearless Frank who just set a new world, record at Daytona Beach . This was a remarkable feat since he did it in his '56 Ford which he acquired in the good old days at R. H . S . Frank's motto is: Little boys are to be seen and not heard. Frank believes just the opposite . And now entering R . H . S . is Cauliflower Connie Ulin, the world champion Kangaroo Boxer. She is assisted into the building by her Kangaroo Court. Her world famous slogan is Hug 'em and Slug 'em. Standing at the bar is a tall, lanky figure in a ten gallon hat. Why, it's Trigger Zear, the famous western TV hero. With his broncho, Zeke, he came into fame with this famous motto: Have gun, will runl And now you .lohnny Rebs stand aside, for here comes the greatest Rebel Rouser of them all, Maj. John S . Mosbey, better known at R . H . S . as Larry Schultz. He is devoting his entire life to the eventual rise of the South . His famous motto is: Save your confederate dollars. Th' South shall rise again!! We see a very attractive lady as owner of a chain of restaurantsf Shirley married a multi-millionaire and has an even dozen children to add to her work. Her motto is: The way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Since Shirley has had much experience in cooking, she volunteered to prepare the meal for this class reunion. Here comes Barnum and Bailey's fat lady better known in her younger days at old R . H . S . as Jo Nichols. She gained her name and rose to fame with this great motto. lf Geritol won't do it, food will. From the famous fat lady we now go to the Auto Accessories Dept. of Sears 8. Roebuck where we see a small young lady, making Auto parts for her husband, Fearless Frank . Harriett's motto: Nothing is harder to remove than grease. Harriett is one of the best mechanics employed . Now walking in the door is a renowned figure in the world of medicine, known to his followers as Chuck the Quack . Chuck first became famous with his Doctor Peterson's Flea Repellent Powder: Doctor Peterson has given this medicine to such famous people as the Queen of Kuwait and the King of Outer Mongolia. Chuck's mottos are: Don't just use any old Bed Bug Killer but get Dr. Peterson's Knock 'em dead. lt'll kill while you are sleeping on them. Outside the auditorium is Miss Sharon Reinier running the hurdles. She acquired her great skill from her old flame LawrenceO'Livia Schultz. In fact, he taught her so well that she consistently beats him in jumping the hurdles. Her motto is: Men are strong, but l am an exception to the rule. We now see Ronald Hahn and his associates from the Girls' School in which he teaches. Ronnie has gained his experience since his flirting days at R . H . S . His slogan is: lt's a woman's world and l'm glad l'm part of it. Miss Lillie Letts is now approaching in her hearse. Since Lillie left R. H. S . she has gone to school and become a mortician. Her business has prospered and she now owns a string of funeral homes. Her motto is: Try 1 h 1 s my Lay-Away-Plan, it's great! As everyone takes their place we hear a blare of trumpets and the class rises to their feet as the President of the United States, Mr. Richard Downey, better known to his countrymen as Little Richard and his first lady, an old R. H . S . classmate, Nell Jones, enter the room. Upon entering the room he speaks his famous words: They said it coulcln't be done. Entering on the arm of the President is the First Lady, Nell Jones. Nell became interested in her husband's occupation when she was elected to the head of the Old Mqid'5 Club. She met Dick when her Club and his Bachelor's Club had a joint meeting . Her motto is: lf the hook is big enough, eventually you'll get a big fish on it. 16 Our Senior Class Will We, the Senior Class oF.R. H . Mr. Tom Duden, their director, was serving his first year here and was the first music instructor to be employed on a full-time basis at Richland for the past several years. The effectiveness of his work is indicated by the tact that the Band received a Division I rating at the State Contest, thus keeping alive a tradition which has been kept intact For eight consecutive years. Only five seniors are pictured among the forty-six members above, which would indicate the or- . ganization can have a brilliant Future. In addition to entering the State Contest at Keosauqua, the Band presented a Spring Concert and a Christmas Program. Their Band Trip included concerts at Farmington and Donnellson, as well as a tour of the locks and power plant of the Keokuk Dam, and a guided tour of historical places at Nauvoo, Illinois. It was climaxed by a dinner at Flora Thum's Cate at Niota, Illinois. The Band also acted as hosts when the Eddyville and Donnellson Bands presented concerts here. They are planning a series of summer concerts each Wednesday evening and expect to participate in the Homecoming program this summer. The Band Mother's group again had an active year in support of the Band . They bought instruments and uniforms and acted as chaperones on trips. Their interest and work is recognized and appreciated by the members of the Band. They are left to right: Laverne Messer, Ronnie Ward, Charles Peterson, Don Bishop, Larry Bishop, Ronald Hahn, ancl Mr. Kenneth Goodwin . The school shop on the west side ofthe square was in operation again this year after one year of idleness . Mr. Bob Snow, instructor, had classes of freshman and senior boys and a great many well-constructed projects were turned out. Pictured here left to right may be seen: Dick Downey, Frank Stephenson, Jerry Zear, Richard Horras, Sammy Greiner, Donald Pauly, and Ronnie Green. Our Future Teachers of America Club This year for the first time a Future Teachers of America unit was organized in our school. Together with Ollie and Hedrick the SoKeo iSouth Keolcuk Countyj Club was organized with Superintendent John H . King as sponsor. Twelve Richland students established membership in the Club with Larry Schultz being President and Harriett Cobb, Secretary. Each unit acted as host for one meeting during the year and the group attended the All-Keokul-c County Meeting and prospective teachers' day at Parsons College. Pictured above is the Stamp Club which includes some ninth graders. The boys and girls basketball teams each played full schedules with the boys winning the Keokuk County Tournament. Candy sales were conducted each noon hour as a fund raising project. Several parties and danceswere successfully conducted during the year. They were responsible for the School Safety Patrol and Roberta Hannah received honorable mention for her essay on safety. The i958 season will long be remembered as the one during which the Tigers got back on the victory trail after an extended I7 game losing streak . With Coach Bob Snow in charge the boys early showed a spirit that was certain to bring results. They scored well in every game as shown by the record printed elsewhere in this section. However, the climax came October 3rd when they turned back South High, of What Cheer, by a score of 44 to 6. They followed this with a 33 to l2 victory at Lovilla to give their fans a iust reward for the loyalty they had displayed. Homecoming on October l7 was again a gala affair. The parade and dance both received many favorable comments and carried on the high standards that has come to characterize these events. The usual Football Feed, provided by the parents, was supplemented this year by a banquet followed by a dance at the Rubio Community Center sponsored by Mr. and Mrs . A . J . Steinbeck and the employees of the Rubio Motor Company. A trip to see the Iowa Hawkeyes play also ranks among the highlights of the l958 football season . Lacking height and experience, Fewgtans were optimistic enough to predict the l8-7 won-lost record the boys compiled. They added the Keokuk County Tournament and the Sectional at Fairfield to their laurels. Their style of play was polished and pleasing to watch and their hustle and initiative won them many loyal supporters . Ronnie Hahn and Charles Peterson, both seniors, were elected co-captains at the close of the season. Sixteen of the boys pictured below are eligible for competition next year. Scenes on this page were snapped during the Champion- ship Game with Hedrick which was cr thriller all the way. lt was the Tigers third victory over Hedrick and the near flawless ball they played won the plaudits of friend and foes alike. Following this game the Tigers received the Championship trophy which now rests with the Richland trophy collection. 52 Where did it go? .ax 4 ip yan, 9 . xmjl, lj? S ni fr? Joylynn Nichols The only regularly starting Senior, Joy- lynn started all twenty- one ball games played this year and was elected co-captain at the close of the season . Her tal- ents will be sorely missed from the guard section next year. Uur Girls' Basketball Squad The Tigerettes fielded the youngest and most inex- perienced team in years, with all six starters of the previous year lost by graduation . The opening line-up often con- tained three freshmen, and sophomores figured prominently in the season's play. The Fact that they won twelve games while losing eleven augurs well For prospects next season. The girls played in the County Tournament at Hedrick and the Sectional at North English and all visited the State Tournament at the close of the season . The scene above will recall these events as they actually were for those who participated in them. Exhorting the students to display their enthusiasm are the four cheerleaders. Left to right they are: Shirley Lankford, Donna Adam, Harriett Cobb, and Mary Robinson. The fact that the camera caught them all four off the floor is indicative of the extreme unison in which they worked. Standing forlornly in the center circle is Tony, the mascot who was expected to bring good luck to all Tiger teams . 1 Z f ill ' Q9 tv? Lions Club vs. Faculty The Lions Club challenged the school faculty to a basketball game. The latter, augmented by such stars as Spud Ward and Lois Hunt-and-Peck Greiner were still outnumbered but put up a gallant fight that resulted in an overtime contest. Photographic proof that the referees were on the Lion's side has been obtained. The lack of uniformity in dress also added to the confusion.
