.f 'V . if 41 RICHLAND HIGH SCHOOL R1chland Iowa TIGER The Senior Class, Editor RICHIAND HIGH SCHOOL TIGER the yearbook of the RICHIAND HIGH SCH00l Published by THE CIASS 0E 1957 Volume Eight Foreword A yearbook is the traditional way of pro- viding a historical record of the events and activities of a school year. Pictures play a prominent part in making this record accurate. The staff of the 1957 TIGER has, therefore, attempted to secure 'a photograph of every individual identified with this school during the past year. They have also collected snapshots and other pictures of scenes and activities which they feel will revive fond memories in years to come. Other data has also been compiled and re- corded in this Eighth Volume of the TIGER that are calculated to recall this school year in days when time has dimmed the memory of those who actually lived them. The fact that there were only six members of our class has placed a heavy burden on some members of the staff. However, the work has been made pleasurable by the fact that we are doing some- thing which we feel will bring pleasure to others as they turn these pages at some future- date. It is our hope that we have contributed some- thing worthwhile to the yearbook tradition at Richland High School and that the subscribers who receive this issue will cherish it and preserve it as a memento of the 1956-1957 school year. - zrfifvif 1 1 rw 'fvfgf' 5I'f.'Ql 14143 g.v.,,,.:f,.f lli'f!'i ,'v v ff A- ...gay A -my ,.-van: gy, ' . f . 43? QDEDICAHON Mr. Bernard Onerheim For the past seven years , Mr. Bernard Onerheim has been the music instructor at Richland High School. His inspiring leadership has made it possible for our Band to be worthy of a Number I rating at the State Music Contest for five consecutive years. The Mixed Chorus , Glee Clubs, and Ensemble Groups have received numerous Number I ratings. Five of the six members of the Class of 1957 have actively participated in music during our upper elementary grades and high school years. We re- cognize and appreciate Mr. Onerheim's excellent instruction, and we know that it is very obvious that his teaching is not limited to music. Respect for, and loyalty to, our nation, community, school, and parents, as well as many other high ideals are important to Mr. Onerheim and he feels it is his duty to teach these things to his students. We, the Senior Class of 1957, sincerely appreciate Mr. Onerheim's untiring efforts for our benefit and wish to dedicate to him our yearbook, The Tiger. If v psi - v IOHN H. King, Superintendent, Harold Greeson, Presi- dent: Fay Schultz, secretary: Richard Conklin, Benny Rusk, Donald Tucker, and Gilbert Dickinson . Richland students are not unmindful of the part played by the Board of Education in making our education possible. We know ,of their unselfish service, all without pay, with only our best interests atheart. The group pictured above have had the added burden of work occasioned by the plan- ning and building of the new addition to our schoolhouse. We wish to ex- press our gratitude to them for their efforts to make life more pleasant for llS. Our Head Cook The Richland School Lunch Program is generally recognized as one of the best in the state. The credit for this r recognition is due principally to our 'V head cook, Mrs. Flossie Steel who f plans and manages the program. Every student of this school and every mem- ber of this community is aware of the fact that she spends many hours beyond those required of her for the welfare of those she feeds each day. Our Office Girl Many and varied are the duties of A our office girl, Miss Marilyn Sheraden ' '31 who serves as secretary to our superin- tendent. Our efforts to run her ragged never erased the perpetual smile we always associate with her. She never failed to make a trip to the office a pleasant experience. , Our Custodian Our clean and comfort- able building is principally due to the long hours and untiring effort of our cus - todian, Mr. Ray Ward. He is one person who does not punch a time clock and the results of his efforts are appreciated by all of us who live here. ii' ize- In GQI5D ,V DENNIS KELLY President Valedictorian Football . . . . . 3-4 Basketball . . . . . 1-3 Track .... . 1-2-3-4 Band ...... . 1-2-3-4 Mixed Chonls . . . . 2-3-4 Glee Club . . . . 2-3-4 Class Plays . . . . . 3-4 Class Officer . . . 1-2-4 4 Paper Staff ............. . 4 Annual Staff . Prophecy of Class '57 We are sure that all of you like to go to a. show to see the previews of coming attractions which are to be offered at the theater. We also believe that you are interested in the coming events and attractions that are to have the members of the Senior Class of Richland High School as the chief actors. The management of the class has , therefore, arranged for your enjoyment and entertainment at this time, a description of coming attractions of the years as they affect the worthy members of the Senior Class , now graduating from the Richland High School. Here we are in the world of tomorrow: First we see Iay Swartzwelter, who is now the sole owner of Monkey Island. Iay first became interested in monkeys when he looked in the mirror and discovered how much he resembled them. Each day at chow time Iay calls his monkeys by the famous song Buglers Holiday. We now see the former Karen Reinier married to the 80 year old professor of Parson's College. She has managed to get through college with straight A's while raising her lucky 130 kids. She is hoping for him to kick the bucket one of these days because he is a multi-millionaire. Our scene now changes and we see the world renowned race king of today: Dennis Kelly. He recently won the 500 mile speedway race at Indianapolis and is the first human being ever to accomplish this feat on foot. Dennis claims his racing ability is due to the fact that he was a star miler in track at good ol' R. H. S. As we look further into the future we cast our gaze upon Keith Sasseen. He is now employed as janitor at Richland High School. He wanted to be an accountant but couldn't manage to sneak an adding machine into class, which was different from Bookkeeping. When he failed as an accountant Phyllis Gould agreed to marry and support him. They now live happily in their 3 room apartment with their 10 kids on Phyllis' salary. Next we see Emma Lou Hollingsworth, better known as Emma the Famous. As you all know Emma Lou left High School and joined the circus. Her career soon soared to the high heavens as she found her talent in training elephants. Her' musical ability on clarinet and piano have helped her tame the savage beasts and trained them to do her slightest bidding. By now Emma has lost a few pounds and you can tell her from the elephants. Her latest accomplishment is known the world over as the only one of its kind. She bought Dumbo, the flying elephant, from Walt Disney and is taking a round-the-world cruise on his back. If you are in the area of Richland, Iowa you will see her go over tomorrow at 12:00 noon sharp. We now see Larry Smith and his wife, the former Karen Erwin. Larry is driving his new Corvette, and is on his way to Union State Bank to deposit today's net earnings of S25 ,000. This is just part of the 2 million that Larry makes each year since he took over the Bob Allen Chevrolet Sales Company, and has changed the name to Lucky Larry's Chevy Sales. And these previews you have just seen, ladies and gentlemen, are taken from a newsreel which will be shown at this theater on September 5 , fifteen years hence. We know that you will not want to miss this feature. Seats will sell at the usual customary price that seats in the assembly are sold to Freshmen by upperclassmen. No seats will be reserved. First come, first served. last Will and Testament To all those present, we the class of Richland High School for 1957, being sound and sane of mind and possessed of certain qualities and assets which we desire to convey to those who will follow us, do hereby present both collectively and individually our last will and testament. I, Larry Smith, being in a sane and sober state of mind, will to Dick Downey my ability to keep out of trouble and to Tom Robertson my studious ways. I, Dennis Kelly, being of sane and sober state of mind, will to Richard Pepper my natural instinct to duck every time Mr. Goodwin raises his arm, and to Iohn Hinshaw my ability to run the mile. Long may you be footsore. I, Jay Swartzwelter, with a mind free from the effects of alchoholic beverages , will to Chuck Peterson my chair in band and the privilege of calling signals in football next year. I hope you don't have to punt as much as we did this year. I, Karen Reinier, hereby will to Katy Nordyke my ability to get the car on Sunday afternoons. May you scrape many a fender and long may your motor stall. I hope you have a lot of exciting afternoons. Have a lot of fun, Katy. Also, If I could, I would will my seat, right in front of Keith Sasseen, to Phyllis Gould. She would appreciate that, I'm sure. I, Keith Sasseen, while in a sane and sober state of mind will to Fay Weber my height to aid him in the next basketball season. High may you grow, Fay. I, Emma Lou Hollingsworth, being mentally sound do hereby will to Mary Lou Dressler my place in the lunch line. May the hunger pangs be milder next year, Mary. We, the Senior Class of 1957, do hereby will the following to the lower classmen. To the Juniors, our ability to reign over the high school: to the Sophomores, our superior intelligence and studious ways: and to the Freshmen our ability to graduate in just four years. Signed this eighth day of May, in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and fifty-seven. 'President -... Vice-President --Secretary-Treasurer af? X NDEIZ GIZADQ 1.-.40 5 I. Music Department Activities Among the most prominent organizations of Richland High School are the instrumental and vocal music groups. The honors won by these groups have brought a sense of pride to our school and to the entire COIT1U1U1'1i'fY- The Marching Band appeared at all home football games and last fall they marched in the Brighton Homecoming Parade, as well as our own, and participated in the Pancake Day parade at Centerville. They have appeared in the Fourth of July parade at Ottumwa for the past three years. Each year they exchange concerts with area schools. This year's trip took them to' Fremont and Eddyville. , In October they entered the State Marching Band contest for the first time and received a Divi- sion I Rating in their appearance at Mount Pleasant. The Concert Band took part in the Keokuk County Music Festival and in their appearance in the State Music Contest at Farmington on May 4, they were awarded a Division I Rating, marking the fifth consecutive year they have been so honor- ed. The Solo and Ensemble 'groups received sixteen Division I Ratings in the State Contest at Delta on April 12-13 to add to the seventeenthey received at the State Contest a year ago, The Band also presents a series of Summer Concerts in the Richland City Park. They are avail- able for any school program such as Open House or Award Assembly. They have always been well received wherever they have appeared. Vocal Music Vocal music has become an integral part of the Richland program. Under the capable direction of Mr. Bernard Onerheim, a Mixed Chorus, Boys' Glee Club, Girls' Glee Club, and smaller groups have been developed which have brought considerable notice to our school and community. Show- ing steady progress each year, they have reached the point where this year the Mixed Chorus re- ceived a Division I rating in the State Music Contes.. The Boys' Glee Club received a Division I rating for the second consecutive year. The Girls' Glee Club, although almost entirely lacking in first soprano voices, was accorded a Division II rating. ' The groups are frequently called upon to contribute to school and community programs. They regularly sing at Baccalaureate. This year they traveled to Fremont and Eddyville to appear in conjunction with the Concert Band. T Our ccompanist During the past year, Emma Lou Hollingsworth has acted as the accompanist for the busy Richland music groups. Her instructor has considered her most capable and her efforts are greatly appreciated by the groups she has served. 36 Girls' Glee Club FIRST ROW: Left to right: Carla Dupuis, Karen Erwin, Grace Pepper, Kate Nordyke, Shirley Lankford, Phyllis Gould. Our Music Plaque Display A Division I rating in a State Music Contest entitles the winner to display the official plaque of the Iowa High School Music Associ- ation. Husbands of Music Boosters erected the board pictured at the right on the south Q Q Q wall of the music room. The large plaques Q represent Division I ratings won by the con- cert band, marching band, mixed chorus, or ' - glee clubs, while the smaller plaques were up- I . B awarded to ensemble groups. Many of the H Q smaller plaques carry two or three dates in- Q dicating the highest award for various ' fa I years. This display, of which we are quite proud, has received considerable attention -i-----:1-l:llll from those who visited the music room. Our Sweetheart Ball King and Queen The outstanding social event of the school year was the Sweetheart Ball held the evening of February 16. A Valentine theme was carried out and those selected to reign as king and queen of the event are pictured at the left. Selected by the ballot of those who attended was Diana Peterson, freshman for queen and Keith Sasseen, senior for king. The Rhythm Kings furnished music for the occasion. Our Tigers Receive Trophy Pictured below is the Boys' Basketball Team as they receive their trophy following the final game of the Keokuk County Tournament at Hedrick. Keith Sasseen is accepting the award from Superintendent Kenneth McDonald of Cllie, president of D O W N the Keokuk County Schoolmaster's Club. D O W N DOWN down 38 lhe Assembly Whether you refer to it as the Assembly or the Study Hall, it is the one place around which a major portion of our daily activity revolved. It was here that the entire student body assembled for roll' call twice daily, at 8:45 and 12:30. Our principal classrooms are adjacent to it and most of our assignments were pre- pared there. Our library, reference materials, and daily newspapers were in close proximity and the large, attractively painted, and pleasant room was generally considered our headquarters at Richland High School. The lunch line Perhaps the most pleasant activity of our daily routine is our participation in the school lunch program. The 12:00 bell or the noontlme fire whistle was our signal to go visit with Mrs . Steel. This year we moved into a new dining room which was a marked contrast to the crowded and no1sy concntions which pre- vailed when we ate on the balcony. Now the spacious room and quiet atmos- phere creates a pleasurable experience exceeded only by that aroused by par- taklng of one of Mrs. .Steel's delicious meals. The s.cene below was snapped just prior to the start of our trip to Hedrick to the Keokuk County Instrumental Music Festival. 0 no wg , . .-,ur rhwgm rl WE -V523 .qs A The 1956 Tigers BACK ROW: L. to R.: Bob Donald-Coach, Lan'y Smith, Dennis Kelly, Keith Sasseen, Iay Swartzwelter, Kenneth Goodwin-Assistant Coach. The Season Richland played as a member of the Keomah League of 8-man football teams. It opened their season at home against Hedrick. The Tigers led until the closing moments of the game when Hedrick managed to score and gained a 6 to 6 tie. The following week at New Sharon the Tigers were beset with injuries which plagued them for the rest of the season with Stephenson, Schultz, and Robertson all side-lined. New Sharon scored a 67 to 28 victory. At home against What Cheer the following week the lead changed hands several times before the Tigers bowed 25 to 13. At Qllovilia, again short handed and playing under poor conditions , the boys gave a good account of H themselves, but lost 31 to 18. The next game with Delta on the home field was a free scoring affair with man-power again being the deciding factor in Delta's favor 46 to 34. At Bussey on October 19, again the score was close until the final quarter when Bussey won 40 to 20. The final game of the season was with Brighton, whose undefeated Bears used their powerful offense, for a 46 to 28 victory. Iay Swartzwelter and Larry Smith were selected as All-State center and halfback respectively for schools sponsoring 8-man football. The Seniors The four boys pictured at the left repre- sented the Seniors on this year's small squad. Their loss will be keenly felt next year as two of them were considered as All-State calibre as stated above. They are from left to right: Dennis Kelly, Keith Sasseen, Iay Swartzwelter, Larry Smith. 43 IAY ..--- , - Y - t,., STANDING: L.
