The 1950-5 1 Base- ball Team Row 1--Ci. Keiper, ll. Lane, lf. lllack, R. Pavlovich, A. Yamber, C. Cononie, J. Matcho, Zabrosky. Row Z-S. Toki, j. Cononie, J. Ribblett, A. Charney, J. Matey, T. Gerosin, Mr. Edelman. THE SU Though Richland's 1951-52 sports record was not im- pressive, the boys of Coaches Elwood Yarner, XYilliam Smith, and Ciunther Edelman gave local sports enthusiasts many thrills, a lot of excitement and a few heartbreaks. A real thriller was served the Richland fans who next witnessed a nip and tuck battle as the Rams edged out South l-'ork 7-0. The score, 12-0 of the Richland-.-Xdams game does not indicate the nature of the bard-fought contest. llie Ram controlled most of the second half and gave one-defeated Adams a real scare. The Rams added their third victory of the year in their last game by beating Conemaugli. lferndale, XXX-stmont, Portage, Somerset, lloswell, and Shade, in that order humbled the Rams before there was any sign of a victory. lierndale and XYestmont, true, won by only one touchdown margins, and Portage was behind at the half before finding itself to also upset tne Rams. llowever, in the seventh game for the Rains, the tide finally turned, and Richland won a 10-0 victory over ller- lin! Gale Klaum paced the Ram charges with -0 points. Dick Mills crossed the goal thrice to be second highest scorer. The junior varsity and junior high teams were equally unimpressive. The former lost six straight and the latter won a single game of four played. In basketball, thc Rams likewise went through a lean season, one of the worst in the school's history. Four encounters passed by the boards before the Rams 7 RY could manage a win, as they ended up on the long end of a 54-40 score with South Fork. In the VVest Central League, ten losses piled up in a row before the team could salvage a victory following the win over South Fork. llowever, during this stretch of winlessness, some of the Ram opponents were forced to go all out to reach victory, as the 53-55 and 50-51 scores of the Portage and South l-'ork games, respectively indicate. The 40-37 Ram win over Conemaugh pulled the team out of its slump only to have a Franklin High team push the Rams once more into the loss column. The varsity cagers then ended the season by squeezing past Nanty Glo 51-49. lligh scorer, with 184 points to his credit, was john Matey, a senior, who had an over-all season scoring aver- age of 10.2 points per game. Adam Yamber pulled in sec- ond with 111 counters. The junior varsity cage team after a poor start, was going great guns by mid-season but suffered greatly by the loss of many of its main-stays to the varsity. The Lambs ended their season under Coach NVilliam Smith with a 9- won-9-lost record. Third place honors in the Great Johnstown junior High League were captured by the Richland junior high team coached by Gunther Edelman. A 5-6 won-lost record was achieved by the Lambkins who had alternating victories and defeats during their season. Riehlandites can look forward to a much better foot- ball and basketball record next year as many experienced boys will be back fighting for their alma-mater. This was the main difficulty with this year's squads which received few returning lettermen from last year's great teams. The Senior Girls Gym Class
