Our Junior and Senior Plays lilrnlngue .Xlong with recording the personalities and happenings of the year, which are the basic purposes of the yearbook, our class was required to select a thenie for the Portal. This problem was easily solved as a consequence of the influence of our English teachers in the instruction of Shakespeare's inspirational works that lett a favorable nnpression on us. .Xs these long enduring passages eonie to us from the lilizabethan Period, we realize their meanings and morals are as appropriate and signineant as were true during the period of their origin. It is now apparent that too little thought was given to the proposed intention ot' this gifted writer at the time they were written. XVQ, the future leaders of the world, who niust share the burden and responsibility ot the ever increasing problems which face us should be aware of the value ot these words. Tlierefore, we should try to absorb the beneficial advice this nnniortal bard has set down before us. XYith this thought in inind we have chosen the Shakes thenie as the background lor our l'J5Z Portal. pearean ,. 3-'N 9,1 6 is qw, ,ff l at - 1 ilu iiiemnriam PAUL ORRIS In memory of Paul Orris who died in june 1951, at the age of seventeen and was a member of the class of '56, 5 IN RECOGNITION JAY LUTHER It is fitting and proper that we give recognition to Jay Luther who graduated from Richland in 1946 and will complete his education at the United States Military Academy, June 4, 1952. During his four years at West Point he was a mem- ber ofthe Cadet Chapel Choir, the French Club, and the intramural track team. He served as a company representative for the AAH0W1tZ6f,, on the yearbook start, and coached an 111- tramural squash team. After graduation he will enter the Engineering Corps of the United States Army. XYe were indeed fortunate in having her as class adviser for two years, as a history, and math teacher, and as a home room teacher. She has gone far beyond the duties of a teacher hy taking an earnest interest in maktng us useful, confident citizens, and molding our characters along the lines they will surpass in. Because of thtse characteristics that we renieinhei' so well, and the help she has given us, we wish to take this opperttunty to express our gratitude, and hope that we may always attain the goals she has iuade accessable to us. 7 PA-x. .Kai I - V 111 f -I-N A . 4 ' clfT ...T-- NS' n -. THE SU Though Richland's 1951-52 sports record was not im- pressive, the boys of Coaches Elwood Yarner, XYilliam Smith, and Ciunther Edelman gave local sports enthusiasts many thrills, a lot of excitement and a few heartbreaks. A real thriller was served the Richland fans who next witnessed a nip and tuck battle as the Rams edged out South l-'ork 7-0. The score, 12-0 of the Richland-.-Xdams game does not indicate the nature of the bard-fought contest. llie Ram controlled most of the second half and gave one-defeated Adams a real scare. The Rams added their third victory of the year in their last game by beating Conemaugli. lferndale, XXX-stmont, Portage, Somerset, lloswell, and Shade, in that order humbled the Rams before there was any sign of a victory. lierndale and XYestmont, true, won by only one touchdown margins, and Portage was behind at the half before finding itself to also upset tne Rams. llowever, in the seventh game for the Rains, the tide finally turned, and Richland won a 10-0 victory over ller- lin! Gale Klaum paced the Ram charges with -0 points. Dick Mills crossed the goal thrice to be second highest scorer. The junior varsity and junior high teams were equally unimpressive. The former lost six straight and the latter won a single game of four played. In basketball, thc Rams likewise went through a lean season, one of the worst in the school's history. Four encounters passed by the boards before the Rams 7 RY could manage a win, as they ended up on the long end of a 54-40 score with South Fork. In the VVest Central League, ten losses piled up in a row before the team could salvage a victory following the win over South Fork. llowever, during this stretch of winlessness, some of the Ram opponents were forced to go all out to reach victory, as the 53-55 and 50-51 scores of the Portage and South l-'ork games, respectively indicate. The 40-37 Ram win over Conemaugh pulled the team out of its slump only to have a Franklin High team push the Rams once more into the loss column. The varsity cagers then ended the season by squeezing past Nanty Glo 51-49. lligh scorer, with 184 points to his credit, was john Matey, a senior, who had an over-all season scoring aver- age of 10.2 points per game. Adam Yamber pulled in sec- ond with 111 counters. The junior varsity cage team after a poor start, was going great guns by mid-season but suffered greatly by the loss of many of its main-stays to the varsity. The Lambs ended their season under Coach NVilliam Smith with a 9- won-9-lost record. Third place honors in the Great Johnstown junior High League were captured by the Richland junior high team coached by Gunther Edelman. A 5-6 won-lost record was achieved by the Lambkins who had alternating victories and defeats during their season. Riehlandites can look forward to a much better foot- ball and basketball record next year as many experienced boys will be back fighting for their alma-mater. This was the main difficulty with this year's squads which received few returning lettermen from last year's great teams. The Senior Girls Gym Class CHEERLEADERS Rim l---Lf xlCl.Elllgllllll, li. School began and another group of Freshmen were beginning on the four year road of high school. To them it was a new adventure with many troubles and hard work. At their first class meeting they elected Diller Helman as president. He was to be assisted by Vice President Robert Decker, Secretary Ronnie Smith and Treasurer Carol Pallos. The Freshman advisers and aids were to be Miss Nettie Jean Russell and Mr. Walter Christ. February 26 came around quickly and the class had come to the highlight of their school year. It was their money making project that was in the form of the Mardi Gras Dance. This activity proved that even though they are beginning on their long journey through school they have the initiative to work hard and make success of the duties which lie before them. 41 THE GPHOMGRE CLASS Row Row Row R ow R ow 1-J. School being over, another senior class is leaving Richland lligh School to face the world that is theirs. In some respects we are sad, and in some we are happy. Several times through our high school years, we have become very discouraged but a bright spot al- ways came into our lives to deviate our thoughts. ' Our many teachers are able to recall the trying times we showed them. However, after all was said and done, I believe we proved to be worthwhile. Q During our high school years, we proved in the helds of music, sports, dramaties, and scholasttcally that we are fine in many respects and if we continue to work hard will make a success of the life which is lying before us. NVC wish to extend our best wishes to all the fine students which will follows us through this institution of learning. Hard work and co-operation is needed if they are to succeed instead of fail. To our teachers we want to say THANK YOU for the help, guidance, and instruction which have been our guide post during these twelve years of school. The education, enjoyment, and the friends we have made are things that we have and which cannot be taken away front us. There are no words that can express our thanks for all the leadership we have been shown. But, we will carry in our hearts when we leave Richland High School a respectland appre- ciation for those who have made it possible for us, TllE SENIORS O17 1952 to achieve a worth- while goal in life. TI-IIE SENIOR Several years ago, I who aiu now The Spirit of '5Z looked upon an apparently ordi- nary group of Freshmen students. To most onlookers these students seemed no more exceptional than any other freshman class. However, in them, I saw visions of a class that was destined lo become one of the greatest to graduate from R. H. S. It was because of the underlying qualities that I saw, that I wanted to follow them through their four years in high school. Many days I was present in their classes, but there is one that is most symbolic of the Senior Class of '52, I remember clearly as I entered first period shorthand class. Betty Roman, who was always good uatured. was endeavoring to overcome the confusion of early morning rush in an effort to study her shorthand. June Lambert and Georgianna Keyser, two of the engaged members were harmonizing on one of the new popular tunes. Beatrice Welmli, a small and cheerful girl, was composing a letter to Betty Saba, who had just been operated on for appendicitis, and was very much missed by her classmates. The thoughtful student of the group joan Stinebiser suggested that they all write a note to Betty. Larry lleitz and Anna Stopko, a gay couple were giggling riotously at the sink in the corner, disrupting the class. After dictation started, and things settled down, I quietly meandered over to the Agricultural room where a husky, typical farmer, Van Hoffman, the handsome blond, Tom Birkhimer, tall, witty, Ralph Hostetler, and the quiet. considerate Hill Harmon were indulging in horseplay while posing for a yearbook picture with the project they had won first place with at the Ebensburg Fair. just then the bell rang and I found myself out on the football field where the girls gym class was in session. Naturally, the athlete of the class, Jackie Gahagen was hitting fungos to equally sports minded Mildred Mattis before the rest of the girls were dressed. Mona Fyock, an intelligent and quick witted girl handed bats to attractive Joann Bloom, who is usually an honor roll student. The first part of third period found me in Mr. I-Iozik's English class where Dave Kaufman, the magician and Shakespearean admirer was busily engaged with handsome Dick Blough, the strong and silent type, and Jean Ruhe, a natural intellect. were dis- cussing the problems of their personal lives. I slipped away to P. 0. D. where Lillian Drosky, a sweet, faithful girl wrote a let- ter to her soldier boy with the willing help of Dolores Graziani, a talented accordion player. Rugged Devon Brendle, who had just returned from a Baltimore Navy Hospital, conversed with the star of our football team, john Matey, about a previous game. Talkative Marilyn Schaller joked with Mr. Samuel as short and cheerful Art Nagle snatched mischievous Telford Miller's pencil and proceeded to break it. In the fourth period bookkeeping room, studious and intelligent Yvonne Hardy talked over a problem with a reserved and considerate janet Hilbrecht. Jean McLaugh- lin, the Kate Smith of the class, interrupted the instructor by attracting Shirley Gritzer's attention, who is known as a very Fine typist. Tommy Swaltek, a jazzy drummer, tried to absorb the lesson while being bothered by the jovial jester, john Long. The period wouIdn't be complete without a few bewildering questions from heart warming, and sin- cere Betty Smith. , Next I went to Trigonometry and witnessed a debate between philosophic Robert He1dmgsf'elder and jack English, the politician and debater. simnatinr one 952. Appetites were eventually satisfied and pretty and modest Carol Blanset enjoyed the company of sweet and petite Puggy Smith, head majorette, popular and versatile Mildred XVarshel, and the raven haired and charming Bonnie Baker. Skipping lunch for Echo were hard working l'at Boyer, headline-cutter, and sports writer, the untiring jim Hunt. Little Ruthy Miller worked diligently over a typewriter in the Journalism room as sandy-haired Caryl NVire checked exchange. After lunch I wandered into French Period 5 and was greeted by translations from musically inclined VVayne Streilein, editor of the Echo. jack Gallagher, the voice of' the class, struggled with tall, silent, and good-looking Chuck Birkhimer over their homework at the same time. Red-headed Iiloise l-Iolsinger, the youngest senior, wrote secret notes while Miss Dodd wasn't looking. I escaped to a busy oiiice practice room on the hrst floor. Curly haired and smiling eyed I-'rank Fisher made every attempt to get out of washing boards as tall, strapping, Bill Rudge dropped a wet rag down his back. Smiling and energetic Marlene VVilliams, Senior queen, and essay winner, strolled by me with an arm load of papers and stopped at pretty, fair complexioned Ruth Knip- ple's desk whu's pleasing personality had won many friends. Creeping into journalism sixth period, I found hard working, trustworthy, and some times dependable Bungy Rusnak grueling over a last minute editorial. Robert Jacobs added noisy rhythm to the atmosphere with the cranking of the minleograph. Mr. Kuzmiak's English, sixth period found small, blond jean Ann King, a small but sweet member, talking the teacher out of a test. The last period of the day followed and I decided to visit Business Law. Class President, Mike Hrabosky, the sports manager, gave tall, dark haired Harry Koehler a list of activities, while good natured and well-mannered Jim Ribblett took the teacher's book. Taking leave of the Law course I stepped into the Drivers' Training Ford and un- derwent a harrowing experience with Auto Club member, Richard Drosky that made me glad I was already a ghost. jolly, Bobby Pitea, sports manager, added his share of thrills and spills. Hy the time soft-spoken Paul Seliga, another boy with horseplay on his mind, got through with me I was glad to retreat hack to school to see Harold Lehman, President of' the btudent Council going over plans and constitution amendments. Active Frank Miklaucic was carrying his accordion into the auditorium, where Bill McQuaide, the snazzy G. I. harcut with the flashy dance step exchanged comments with tall, Diller Helman, the playful party of the crowd. The fisherman, Arlen Mackle was the First one out of P. O. D. class when the bell rang to end the day. Now that you have seen these students through my eyes, I am sure all those who knew them will remember how fine they were. It is because of their loyalty. co-operation, hard work, and pulling together that they have advanced this tar. As you can see, my prophesy of their future has come into reality. It is inevitable that I will watch over my prodigies while they continue the successful way of life that they have established so far.
